History

Part 1 and Part 2: In 1965, Peter Velasco was among the leaders of the 1,500 Filipino Americans involved in touching off the five-year strike and of grapes in Delano, California – the incident that became the impetus of the United Farm Workers’ creation. A member of the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee, Velasco and his compatriots were joined eight days after their strike began by the Mexican-American National Farmworkers Association, led by Cezar Chavez. After a year of successful cooperation, the two groups merged into the new United Farmworkers, of which Velasco would become a leading and long-lasting member. Becoming a member of the executive board in 1971, Velasco remained with the Union until 1988, at which time he retired as a “secretary-treasurer emeritus.” Thereafter, in spite of his retirement, he and his wife remained closely involved with the UFW community, and actively volunteered in the running of the Cause’s La Paz headquarters, with Velaco serving on the board of a number of the UFW’s corporations. Velasco would remain a valued and contributing member of the UFW family until the time of his death in 1995.

Scope and Content

Part 1: The collection is divided into two sections: the first series is office files, largely from the time when Velasco was Stockton Area Director. The largest portion of the collection is Velasco's personal files from the early 1960s to the late 1970s.

Though Velasco passed away in 1995, more recent materials, largely concerned with honoring his life, are also included. The portion of the collection given over the UFW materials includes minutes from various organizational boards, copies of their newsletters, legal files, files relating to international labor guests, personnel files, and files pertaining to the day to day running of the Union, the movement more broadly, and La Paz headquarters. Materials within the Velascos’ personal files largely consist of correspondence and photographs from their extensive network of friends, many of whom were also involved with the UFW. Also included is material relating to Velasco’s personal interests and hobbies, work history, membership in other organizations, and an extensive collection of audio-tapes, most of which relate to the UFW cause.
