Her father, Richard, is a police officer in Plano, Texas, a Dallas suburb, and she didn't know where he was. "I started calling him when I heard. I didn't know he was home," she said. "It was so unreal." Her father was off duty at the time and sleeping safely at home. The 27year veteran of the force said that while he didn't personally know any of the officers who were killed, he has a lot of friends who did. "Something like this brings the community and the police department together," he said. "We've had a lot http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2016/07/12/189374248 1/4 6/29/2018 The Inside Edge: Glenn gearing up for return to ice | icenetwork.com: Your home for figure skating and speed skating. of support from the community." Glenn, the 2014 U.S. junior champion, has been working toward a return to competition this summer after taking most of last season off. She finished third at the Broadmoor Open, winning the short program with a Scott Brownchoreographed interpretation of "Send in the Clowns" that included a nice triple fliptriple toe. "I felt great about the Broadmoor short," Glenn said. "Scott did a fantastic job with the choreography, and I love doing it. 'Send in the Clowns' is a beautiful piece. I saw YuNa Kim skating to it, and it just took my breath away, how gorgeous it was." Glenn competed at a small local competition last weekend, despite having equipment issues. "My boots were very broken down, and I've had to put a quick order on some new ones," she said. "My free skate was improved from Broadmoor, but it wasn't my best, for sure." Glenn plans to include a triple lutztriple toe and a triple fliptriple toe in her "Rhapsody in Blue" free skate, which was choreographed by her coach, Darlene Cain. She intends to compete at the Cranberry Open next month. "I do [lutztoe] every day in practice, but we're trying to look at the big picture and the whole program," Glenn said. Last season, Glenn started out with a sixthplace finish at the 2015 Skate Canada Autumn Classic International and a fifthplace result at the Junior Grand Prix (JGP) in Latvia. Instead of moving ahead with qualifying competitions, however, Glenn got off the ice completely. She realized that she hadn't really been loving the sport ever since the 201314 season. "[Last season] started out OK, but I kept having setbacks, both personally and on the ice," she said. "I had to step back from the sport and reevaluate. I took almost six months off to gather everything together." In February, Glenn decided to get back to training only in a new place, and with new coaches. She switched to working with Peter and Darlene Cain in Euless, Texas, alongside Ashley Cain and Aleksei Krasnozhon. "It's been great, honestly," Glenn said. "Since I've known them for a long time, it hasn't been too hard on me. Being able to skate with Ashley and Alex has been a huge motivation for me, and it's a happy and competitive environment." http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2016/07/12/189374248 2/4 6/29/2018 The Inside Edge: Glenn gearing up for return to ice | icenetwork.com: Your home for figure skating and speed skating. Glenn did attend the 2016 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, and she went to the world championships as a spectator, too. A lot of U.S. skaters who weren't competing came to watch, and Glenn and her boyfriend, Nathan Chen, enjoyed getting to hang out with everyone in the stands. "It was nice to get to see them and talk to them while we're not all stressed out competing," she said. Glenn loved watching the competition, and she became very motivated witnessing Evgenia Medvedeva win the title. In 2014, Medvedeva won a JGP event in France in which Glenn competed and took bronze. "It was so aweinspiring," Glenn said. "It was so crazy to see Evgenia, a girl I've competed against, become the world champion. She's a very sweet, loving girl, and I was very happy for her. During Ashley [Wagner] and Gracie [Gold's] programs, I was screaming so loud, and you couldn't even hear yourself in the arena. I just thought, 'I want this to be me. I will do whatever it takes to do this.'" Kerrigan at the flea market Nancy Kerrigan and her son, Matthew Solomon, appeared on Home & Garden Television (HGTV) Sunday night, in an episode of the show Flea Market Flip entitled "Battle of the Olympians." The two were given $500 to spend and had one hour to transform and resell three of their purchases; the team that came away with the highest overall selling prices won. "I think we were most proud of the console table it took a lot of manpower to transform it," Solomon said. "My mom and I wanted to bring that one home especially. It was really beautiful and had some great history as well." The twotime Olympic figure skating medalist and her son took on Olympic judo champion Kayla Harrison and her grandmother, Rachel, at the LIC Food & Flea in Long Island City, New York, and the Brimfield Antique Show and Flea Market in Massachusetts. "We had a blast, and it was a lot of hard work, but I think it paid off, and we had a great experience," Solomon said. "You never get to see people like my mom do things like that. And Kayla is the greatest. I can't wait to see her in Rio!" The show reairs about once a week through Aug. 7. ISSN: 2519-1268 Issue 9 (Summer 2019), pp. 59-87 DOI: 10.6667/interface.9.2019.86 Russia/Russians on Ice: Imagined Identity and Cross-cultural Communication in Yuri!!! on ICE tien-yi chao National Taiwan University Abstract Yuri!!! on ICE (2016; 2017) is a Japanese TV anime featuring multinational figure skaters com- peting in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. The three protagonists, including two Russian skaters Victor Nikiforov, and Yuri Purisetsuki (Юрий Плисецкий), and one Japanese skater Yuri Katsuki (勝生勇利), engage in extensive cross-cultural discourses. This paper aims to explore the ways in which Russian cultures, life style, and people are ‘glocalised’ in the anime, not only for the Japanese audience but also for fans around the world. It is followed by a brief study of Russian fans’ response to YOI’s display of Russian memes and Taiwanese YOI fan books relating to Russia and Russians in YOI. My reading of the above materials suggests that the imagined Russian identity in both the official anime production and the fan works can be regarded as an intriguing case of cross-cultural communication and cultural hybridisation. March 23, 2019 Saitama, Japan Nathan Chen (USA) repeats as World Champion, sets record score in Saitama Nathan Chen (USA) repeated as World Champion in what was a spectacular Men’s Final at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Saitama (JPN) on Saturday. Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu pulled up one spot to claim the silver, his sixth Word medal. Vincent Zhou (USA) took the bronze, his first medal at the World Championships. Chen had drawn to skate after Hanyu, who had set the 18,000 spectators at a sold out arena on fire with his performance. Nevertheless, the 19-year-old remained composed and put out a clean program to “Land of All” by Woodkid, pulling off a quad Lutz, flip, quad toe and quad toe-triple toe as well as five triples including an Axel. The 2018 World Champion collected a level four for his spins and footwork and set a new highest score in the Free Skating with 216.02 points. He racked up 323.42 points. “It’s an amazing feeling to be up here with these two guys. This competition went awesome. I’m proud of myself for being able to put out two pretty strong programs and ultimately just happy with how it went and I hope to have more experiences like this,” Chen said. “Every time Yuzu (Yuzuru Hanyu) skates, he does something amazing and incredible and it’s just a huge honor to be able to skate with him, skate after him, especially knowing how he sets the bar. It’s great to be able to follow that,” the U.S.
