This year’s tournament will be held in Minsk, Belarus’ capital and largest city, on 9-10 January, 2016. It could be the last time that the European Championships consist of the big combination (Men) and the small combination (Ladies). In, 2017 the event will see the removal of the 10,000 m (Men) and the 5000m (Ladies) which will be replaced by the 1000m. Seven-time-champion Sven Kramer (NED) is favorite to win the Men’s tournament, whilst Ireen Wüst (NED) and Martina Sábliková (CZE) are expected to fight a tough battle for the Ladies’ gold. Competition format Unlike the World Cup, in which skaters race for single distance titles, at the European Championships performances in four distances add up to the final ranking. Times are calculated based on the 500m, for example the 1500m time will be divided by 3. In Minsk there will be a traditional two-day-competition, starting on Saturday with the Men’s and Ladies’ 500m followed by the 5000m for Men and the 3000m for Ladies. On Sunday racing resumes with the 1500m, and the 8 best ranked skaters after 3 distances qualify for the final distance: the 5000m for Ladies and the 10,000m for Men.

Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford (CAN) strike gold Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford of Canada came from second place in the Short Program to strike the Pairs gold. China’s Wenjing Sui/Cong Han earned the silver medal and Aljona Savchenko/ Bruno Massot of Germany captured the bronze medal in their debut as a team at the World Championships. Duhamel/Radford put out a flawless performance to “Hometown Glory”, nailing a triple twist, side by side triple Lutz, throw quadruple Salchow, triple toe-double toe-double toe combination, a throw triple flip as well as four level-four elements. The Canadian Champions posted a new personal best of 153.81 points and totaled 231.99 points to defend their World title. “It was an out of body experience. We knew we were better than what we’ve done this season. It was to come here and do it for ourselves.     October 25, 2019 Lausanne, Switzerland 2019/20 season promises to be Short Track Speed Skating’s fastest ever The ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating series gets under way again on November 1, with a thrilling season of racing in prospect. A combination of experienced champions and bright new stars will make up a fascinating field of racers, meaning that predicting a winner in either the men’s or women’s field is extremely tough. Suzanne Schulting of the Netherlands was the standout athlete of last season. The 21-year-old phenomenon came into the season with an Olympic gold medal from PyeongChang 2018 boosting her confidence and looked imperious throughout. At the 2019 ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, she became only the second-ever European victor of the Women’s overall World Championships title in its 44- year history, getting gold in the 1000m and 3000m Super Final to take the title. That achievement followed a season in which Schulting was overall 1000m and 1500m ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating champion – and didn’t lose a single 1000m final that she lined up in. With a bulletproof mentality and improved levels of power, Schulting will surely be in the mix again, batting for podiums in every distance and determined to build a dynasty.
