This wall carving brings together traditional Māori beliefs and contemporary symbols of the modern world. This is most apparent near the top where the Kiwi and the Wallaby are facing each other while resting on the shoulders of Tangaroa, the traditional Māori god of the sea. It was carved by master carver, Hemi Stewart. He is a descendent of the tribes Rongwhakaata and Tūhoe.

The following is a definition of the wall carving:

Ko Tangaroa te ingoa o tēnei poupou.

Ko ōna tamariki kei te taha i a ia.

Ko Tohora raua ko Kahawai kei ōna taha. Ko Paua kei runga i tōna puku.

I hainatia te tiriti mō te kai a Aotearoa me Ahitereira.

Tangaroa is the name of this wall carving.

Two of his children are at his side, Tohora the whale and the fish Kahawai. Paua or abalone is resting on his stomach.

Tohora’s tail is holding the handle to a kete riwai, or basket of potatoes. Tangaroa’s tail is supporting the base of the kete riwai.

The blue signifies Te Moana nui a Kupe or the Tasman sea.

The feather in the hand of Tangaroa represents the signing of the Food Treaty that bridges the gap between New Zealand and Australia.

It’s proudly displayed in the foyer of the FSANZ office.
