April 2015 | 1 2 creating green communities for a better tomorrow 3 As the lights went out across city skylines and landmarks in 172 countries and territories across the globe in commemoration of the Earth Hour on March 28th, it not only demonstrated the eagerness of citizens to participate in the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment but the unprecedented unity from people around the world also showed their commitment to use their power to change climate change. Through science, we learn that climate change is a global concern and is affecting small and large nations but Earth Hour shows us that people have the power to take on the climate challenge and it also confirms our belief that in order to change climate change we need to act together. Prof. Mohammed bin More than just turning out the lights, the ninth edition of Earth Hour was Fahad about people around the world sending a clear message that climate action is Executive Editor a political priority. It proved that climate change is on top of their agenda, no matter which part of the world they live in. In the UAE, Earth Hour sent home the message that we can be part of the solution to climate change by reducing our water consumption habits. The UAE is one of the highest water consumers in the world although we have very little fresh water resources. The process of desalination the UAE employs to generate potable water from the sea is a highly energy intensive one which emits a large amount of carbon emissions. Too much of this greenhouse gas is harmful to our climate and our environment. Last year was designated as the hottest year on record and as reports of record low Arctic Sea ice come in, this year’s Earth Hour reminds us why it is imperative for all of us to be part of the climate conversation. Climate change and the rising of global temperatures affects us all – humans, species and plants. Even a slight change in temperature can throw off our delicately balanced ecosystems. It is only by powering collective action as we did for Earth Hour that we can address local climate issues well beyond the hour. The close links and interdependency of water and energy are now at the top of the global development agenda. In the light of increasing pressures and challenges on water resources posed by the growth of population and economy, climate change and consumption patterns, it will do us well to remember the old saying that ‘we never know the worth of water till the well is dry’.
