Ashley joked with the audi- ence about his competitive nature when dealing with the game ofchess. "I'm nice to kids, but not on a chess board," Ashley said. "I don't like spicy food and Dr. Graves said he is going to keep it spicy. So I'm going to have a bad case ofindigestion tonight. Either that or I'll have to make it bland. " Tahirah Hargrove, 10-years- old from Falkener Elementary School, was one ofthe two female youth challengers in the event. Once, her game was over, Hargrove was asked where she learned to play and how she felt about playing the grandmaster. "I learned how to play last year at my school in the 4th grade," said Hargrove. "I felt scared." An observer ofthe event, Waymond Blackmon, an A&T staffphotographer started the first Chess Club at Dudley High School. Blackmon started play- ing the game at 10-years-old and has played for the Greensboro Chess Club sponsored by the YMCA. He shared his feelings about the event. "Oh, I totally love it; wished it could've been done a year ago," Blackmon said. When asked ifthese type of events would continue, Dr. Graves said, "Ibelieve that we should be keeping up the effort and try to set up a situation where Grandmaster Ashley will always be welcomed in Greensboro and A&T.Also, as we get more notoriety as a center for chess, we're going to attract other players ofhis stature, for example, I would like to get the Women's International Grandmaster SusanPolgar."
