Ryukyu Kempo— Modern Arnis What Do Professor Leon Jay, Grandmaster Will Higginbotham and Master of T Small Circle Ju Jitsu– Ryukyu Kempo— Modern Arnis What do Professor Leon Jay, Grandmaster Will Higginbotham and Master of Tapi Tapi Ken Smith have in common? The 3 amigos will be joining forces in Yuma, AZ February 17th and 18th, 2012 to hold a two day seminar! Proudly hosted by Master Nathan Bratcher of Bratcher’s Karate Professor Leon Jay (9th Degree Black Belt) is currently the Grandmas- ter of Small Circle Jujitsu worldwide, the son of Wally and Bernice Jay, has been training in the martial arts for over 53 years, having began at the age of 2years old in his father's dojo. Apart from the obvious ad- vantage of a lifetime's training at the hands of Professor Wally Jay, Leon has had access to many teachers of exceptional talent and accomplishment, including: Prof. Remy Presas and Grandmaster George Dillman. Leon Jay not only comes from a martial arts family of legendary skills, but one in which the Professor's belief, that all martial arts benefit from a free and open exchange of ideas and techniques, dominated. Apart from a highly developed set of sophisticated teach- ing and technical principles, this is perhaps the single most identifiable feature of Small Circle JujitsuTM. The Polynesian concept of Pohai, or a circle of friends, is what most describes the Jay‟s family approach to the arts. Have you ever wondered why you really do your traditional forms or katas? Do you really think that all those intricate moves were devel- oped for exercise and to build coordination? Will Higginbotham is one of Professor George Dillman‟s top stu- dents. A 9th Dan in Ryukyu Kempo GM Will Higginbotham is fea- tured in many of Dillman‟s videos and most of his books. GM Will Higginbotham has been studying various martial arts since 1968 and has been with Prof. Dillman since 1985. As his main focus is in Kyu- sho Jitsu he will show you how this study can fit into any Martial Art. Will is also a 5th Dan in Small Circle Jujitsu and a 2nd Dan in Modern Ar- nis, He possesses an uncanny ability to teach and show how these arts compliment any martial art. Due to Will‟s unique privilege of training with some of the greatest martial artists in history he brings a unique view into the world he loves most “Kyusho Jitsu”. Ken Smith began his study of Karate when hew as 18 years old in a small Indiana town. Later moving to Orland Park where he studied Isshinryu Karate under Jesse Gallegoes, a 9th degree black belt. It was in this style that Sensei Ken earned a 6th degree black belt. He continued to grow was a martial artists, studying Modern Arnis and pressure points with George Mazek, a 4th degree black belt in Modern Arnis, however, it was his introduction and training with Grandmaster Remy A. Presas, founder and creator of Modern Arnis, that impacted Sensei Ken‟s training immensely. Grandmaster Pre- sas, known as „Professor‟, promoted Ken Smith to the level of Mas- ter of Tapi-Tapi, the highest level of achievement in Modern Arnis. He continues to pass on Professor‟s art, traveling all over the United States, France, England, Germany and Canada. Master Ken Smith is an active member of the steering committee of the International Modern Arnis Federation (IMAF, Inc.), as well as being on the Board of Directors. • FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS the Filipino Martial Arts
Ronald A. Harris, Ph.D. FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS The Filipino martial arts (FMA) can be called Filipino fencing, because they are methods of personal armed combat that emphasize skills in weaponry over skills in empty hands. Unarmed combat is practiced in FMA, but is traditionally studied after weaponry. This training sequence sets FMA apart from other martial arts that initiate with empty hands. Armed combat is known as Arnis, Eskrima (fencing, Spanish), and Kali. Arnis derives from the Spanish arnes meaning armor. It also comes from “harness,” referring to the battle harness worn by Filipino soldiers under Spanish command. Arnis-de-mano means “harness of hand”, referring to deft hand movements of Filipino grooms for Spanish officers. These lightning fast hand movements were native martial arts techniques in disguise. Forbidden by the Spanish to practice martial arts, defiant Filipinos retained their fighting skills in secret by hiding them in dance forms called Santikan, Sayaw, and Moro-Moro. Other etymologies have been suggested for the names of the various Filipino arts. Dueling an opponent is “to skirmish”. The Spanish term Esgrima is in the Pilipino language. Kali might be named after the Hindu Goddess of c:\mars\clio\fma 1 Ronald A. Harris, Ph.D. Destruction. Dan Inosanto says Kali is the conjunction of the first syllables of two words from the Philippine Islands Visayan language--kamot meaning “hand” and lihok meaning “motion”. Thus, Kali means “hand motion”. An etymology of the Pilipino language indicates otherwise. In the Hiligaynon dialect of the Western Visayas, the term kali means “to dig”, as with a shovel (pala).
