WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP TO BUILD A STRONGER ISRAEL THROUGH ALIYAH

Vol. VII No. 50 (#292) • December 27, 2018 QueensJewishLink.com • 718-880-2622 • [email protected] 9 בס׳ד LMNOmarketing.com

Dear Friends & Family, As you might remember, I was honored by Bais Yaakov of Queens on a number of occasions. Now I have been asked to step up to the plate one more time for a school that is very dear to my heart. There is a gemara that says “be’ra karah d’avuhah.” In its simple form it means “a son is an extension of a father.” My son, Rabbi Nosson Neuman, was zoche to found a school in Far Rockaway seven years ago in memory of our machateinesteh Mrs. Miriam Yormark a”h. She together with her husband Rav Mordechai Aryeh Yormark a”h influenced hundreds of people to become closer to the Torah and to be ehrliche yidden. The mechutan a”h, was a beloved Rav and Rebbe to thousands. Anyone who remembers them can’t help but smile at their warmth and total devotion to everyone who came in contact with them, and certainly to the community of Memphis Tennessee. I have been zoche to be involved in the “World of Chinuch” for 65 years. 50 of these years were spent building Bais Yaakov of Queens. You all know me in one way or another. My wife, Morah Rivkah, was a well-known teacher in her own right in Yeshivah Toras Emes for many decades as well. As the co-creator of the famous 613 Torah Avenue series, she has reached hundreds of thousands of children over the last 45 years. I am proud of what my son Reb Nosson has accomplished in the world of Chinuch. He has certainly been imbued from his early years with a sense of achrayus for the Klal. I had the privilege of having him at my side for 15 years. He has built a beautiful Bais Yaakov, student by student, family by family, one at a time, with care and devotion. From what I hear, his talmidos love his kindness and easy going manner that helps them grow in their own unique way. He asked me, or if I may say politely told me, that he needs my help. It is very true that we are the Great Grandparents of two precious talmidos, Nechama and Miriam Neuman. Incidentally, as only Great Grandparents can attest to, they are the cutest and smartest girls in the school. Together with an incredible Board of Directors, they have recently purchased the building that they are currently in. The school can use your help. May I ask you to help my two Great Granddaughters have a wonderful chinuch experience by assisting this amazing Bais Yaakov to the best of your ability? In this zechus, my brocha to all of you is that the Ribbono Shel Olam should bless you with gezunt, arichas yomim v'shanim tovim, with abundant yiddeshe nachas from your beautiful mishpachos. May your tefillos for whatever you need, parnasah, shidduchim, yeshuos, and refuos be niskabel bekarov! For more information please visit the school’s website at www.baisyaakovam.org I thank you in advance, Rabbi Moshe Neuman

Is that guy in a good mood or bad mood? Is he open to my advances or not? Most of us do this intuitively. Before we say something, we look at the other person and instantly know if he is pleased or upset, happy or distressed – and we modify our exchanges accordingly. Many children, how- ever, fi nd this skill elusive, and they must be taught to recognize the physical signs that correspond to different emotions. One of the techniques used is to teach the child to “read faces.” A therapist will show the child a picture of a person’s face, and then help him or her identify the emotion that that person is most likely feeling. “See, when the end of the mouth curves up, that’s a smile, and it means he’s happy. When his forehead crinkles up, and his mouth moves down like that, it means he’s angry.” While most feelings have distinct physical appearances and are easy enough to distin- guish, there are two that are remarkably simi- lar: anger and hatred. In both, the person’s face shows displeasure. In both, the person looks genuinely unhappy. And in both, the person seems to be in pain. As a result, teach- ing a child which face represents hate and which represents anger is very diffi cult. One thing is clear, though: Neither face is smiling, because both anger and hatred aren’t satisfy- ing, enjoyable experiences. Quite the oppo- site, they are dramatically unpleasant. Ruining Your life The Gemara (P’sachim 113b) tells us, “If someone is accustomed to anger, his life isn’t a life, and he is never happy.” Why is this? Be- cause powerful emotions are like a gas that

he community was honored to be treat- ed to a fascinating shiur by Rabbi Alon TAnava at the Tov Beis Midrash, hosted by Chazaq on Tuesday evening, December 18. The audience included people from a num- ber of boroughs who fl ocked to hear words of wisdom from Rabbi Anava. He began by explaining that dreams have a basis in science, as psychology teaches that dreams hold the key to the inner dimension of a person. He noted that in Sefer B’reishis there are nine dreams. There is an argument in the Talmud about dreams. One opinion is that dreams are false. Another opinion is that dreams reveal things we need to know. He taught ideas from the Ramchal’s teach- ings that there are two types of dreams. Type One is completely fake, but Type Two is real with a message.
