Please sit ¶ The Liturgy of the Word

The First Reading Job 28 v 1 - 11

‘Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold to be refined. Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted from ore. Miners put an end to darkness, and search out to the farthest bound the ore in gloom and deep darkness. They open shafts in a valley away from human habitation; they are forgotten by travellers, they sway suspended, remote from people. As for the earth, out of it comes bread; but underneath it is turned up as by fire. Its stones are the place of sapphires, and its dust contains gold.

‘That path no bird of prey knows, and the falcon’s eye has not seen it. The proud wild animals have not trodden it; the lion has not passed over it.

‘They put their hand to the flinty rock, and overturn mountains by the roots. They cut out channels in the rocks, and their eyes see every precious thing. The sources of the rivers they probe; hidden things they bring to light.

I know that my Redeemer lives All and that at the last he will stand upon the earth.

Psalm 130 Please remain seated as the choir sings the psalm.

Refrain: My soul waits for the Lord.

Out of the depths have I cried to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice; let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication. If you, Lord, were to mark what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you shall be feared.

5

Refrain: My soul waits for the Lord.

I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; in his word is my hope. My soul waits for the Lord, more than the night watch for the morning, more than the night watch for the morning.

Refrain: My soul waits for the Lord.

O Israel, wait for the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy; With him is plenteous redemption and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.

Refrain: My soul waits for the Lord. Alleluia Please stand as the choir sings

Choir I am the light of the world, says the Lord: whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life. All Alleluia… The Gospel Reading Mark 4 v 30 - 32

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

Jesus also said, ‘With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.’

Music after the Sermon

Organ music Please stand

Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

7

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession The President says

In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. Please sit or kneel. This response is used after each bidding

Lord, in your mercy All Hear our prayer.

After the final bidding the President says

God of creation, who loves all he has made and all that has evolved, open the eyes of your people, that your love might be reflected in our care for the planet. Through Jesus Christ, who walked this earth and calls us by name. All Amen. Please stand

¶ The Liturgy of the Sacrament

The Peace The President says

You shall go out in joy and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. The peace of the Lord be always with you All and also with you. 8

The Deacon says

Let us offer one another a sign of peace. Please sit

Please sit as the choir sings

Hymn (NEH 197)

Creator God, your children's voices rise, Fed by your earth, uplifted by your skies, Thankful for all its beauty and surprise, Praise ever singing, ever singing.

Where forests range their canopies of trees, May we sustain such vital gifts as these, Let woodland shelter still resound with bees, Birds ever singing, ever singing.

Beneath the moon the ocean lifts its tide, Help us to curb our poisoned human pride Still may the whales, the fish and dolphins ride Seas ever singing, ever singing.

From south to north, from deeps to thinnest air, Kingdoms of creatures flourish everywhere, Open our hearts and let us learn to share Life ever singing, ever singing.

God gave the word, and earth spins out in space, Made us custodians of this glorious place, Then let us give the future human race Worlds ever singing, ever singing. Words: Jenny Baines Tune: Sine Nomine

Prayer at the Preparation of the Altar The President says

Wise and gracious God, you spread a table before us; nourish your people with the word of life and the bread of heaven. All Amen. Please stand

9

The Eucharistic Prayer

Blessed are you, Lord God, our light and our salvation; to you be glory and praise for ever.

From the beginning you have created all things and all your works echo the silent music of your praise. In the fullness of time you made us in your image, the crown of all creation.

You give us breath and speech, that with angels and archangels and all the powers of heaven we may find a voice to sing your praise:

The choir sings the Sanctus and Benedictus

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

How wonderful the work of your hands, O Lord. As a mother tenderly gathers her children, you embraced a people as your own. When they turned away and rebelled your love remained steadfast.

From them you raised up Jesus our Saviour, born of Mary, to be the living bread, in whom all our hungers are satisfied. He offered his life for sinners, and with a love stronger than death he opened wide his arms on the cross. 10

On the night before he died, he came to supper with his friends and, taking bread, he gave you thanks. He broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Great is the mystery of faith: All Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again.

Father, we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross; we remember his dying and rising in glory, and we rejoice that he intercedes for us at your right hand.

Pour out your Holy Spirit as we bring before you these gifts of your creation; may they be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.

As we eat and drink these holy things in your presence, form us in the likeness of Christ, and build us into a living temple to your glory.

Bring us at the last with Mary, Peter, Cedd and all the saints to the vision of that eternal splendour for which you have created us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, by whom, with whom, and in whom, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: All Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen. Please sit or kneel

11

The Lord’s Prayer

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

The President breaks the consecrated bread saying

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

The choir sings Agnus Dei, during which the bread is broken

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

The Giving of Communion The President says

God’s holy gifts for God’s holy people. All Jesus Christ is holy, Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The body of Christ. The blood of Christ.

Those in the Cathedral receive communion (from their seats). Please indicate if you wish to receive Communion by holding out your hands. If you simply wish to receive a blessing, please keep your head bowed.

12

Spiritual Communion

If you are worshipping online, while the priest receives communion, you are invited to use this prayer of spiritual communion wherever you are.

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. after the Prayer of St Richard of Chichester

Motet During Communion the choir sings a motet

Prayer after Communion

The President says Let us pray. A moment of silence is kept. The President then says the Post Communion Prayer

Creator God, send your Holy Spirit to renew this living world, that the whole creation, in its groaning and striving, may know your loving purpose and come to reflect your glory; in Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

All Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

Please stand

¶ The Dismissal

The Blessing The President blesses the people

May God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of all goodness, pour his blessing upon all things created, and upon us his children, that we may use his gifts to his glory and the welfare of all peoples; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. All Amen.

The Dismissal The Deacon sings

Hymn (NEH 285)

For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies: Lord of all, to thee we raise This our sacrifice of praise.

For the beauty of each hour, of the day and of the night, hill and vale, and tree and flower, sun and moon and stars of light: Lord of all ...

For the joy of ear and eye, for the heart and brain’s delight, for the mystic harmony linking sense to sound and sight: Lord of all ...

For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild: Lord of all ...

For each perfect gift of thine, to our race so freely given, graces human and divine, flowers of earth and buds of heaven: Lord of all ...

15

For thy Church that evermore lifteth holy hands above, offering up on every shore this pure sacrifice of love: Lord of all ... Words: F S Pierpont (1835 - 1917) Tune: Dix (NEH 47)

Reviewing our Lifestyles Following Jesus

During the season from Trinity to Harvest the Cathedral team is encouraging households to complete a survey. It has been designed for Christians and can be accessed here: https://creationcare.org.uk/

The survey will help you see where you can make improvements in your homelife to benefit the environment. We can all feel overwhelmed by the scale of the crisis, but we can all make changes that help. If you complete the survey, do let Imogen know if you get an award. We will be celebrating achievements each week in our newsletter. Thank you.
