We confess to you our failure to protect the environment. Lord have mercy. All Lord, have mercy. 3 The President declares God’s forgiveness May the Father of all mercies cleanse you from your sins, and restore you in his image to the praise and glory of his name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. O Lord the Only- begotten Son, Jesus Christ. O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father. Thou that takest away the sins of the world have mercy on us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world receive our prayer. Thou sittest at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For thou only art holy. Thou only art the Lord. Thou only art the Most High, Jesus Christ. With the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect The President says Let us pray. The congregation, still standing, remains for a short time in silent prayer, after which the President prays: In a time of silence, let us pray that our worship will bring us closer to the one who has created all things. Glorious God, the whole creation proclaims your marvellous work: increase in us a capacity to wonder and delight in it, that heaven’s praise may echo in our hearts and our lives be spent as good stewards of the earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen. 4 Please sit ¶ The Liturgy of the Word The First Reading Job 28 v 1 - 11 ‘Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold to be refined. Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted from ore. Miners put an end to darkness, and search out to the farthest bound the ore in gloom and deep darkness. They open shafts in a valley away from human habitation; they are forgotten by travellers, they sway suspended, remote from people. As for the earth, out of it comes bread; but underneath it is turned up as by fire. Its stones are the place of sapphires, and its dust contains gold. ‘That path no bird of prey knows, and the falcon’s eye has not seen it. The proud wild animals have not trodden it; the lion has not passed over it. ‘They put their hand to the flinty rock, and overturn mountains by the roots. They cut out channels in the rocks, and their eyes see every precious thing. The sources of the rivers they probe; hidden things they bring to light. I know that my Redeemer lives All and that at the last he will stand upon the earth. Psalm 130 Please remain seated as the choir sings the psalm. Refrain: My soul waits for the Lord. Out of the depths have I cried to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice; let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication. If you, Lord, were to mark what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you shall be feared. 5 Refrain: My soul waits for the Lord. I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; in his word is my hope. My soul waits for the Lord, more than the night watch for the morning, more than the night watch for the morning. Refrain: My soul waits for the Lord. O Israel, wait for the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy; With him is plenteous redemption and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins. Refrain: My soul waits for the Lord. Alleluia Please stand as the choir sings Choir I am the light of the world, says the Lord: whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life. All Alleluia… The Gospel Reading Mark 4 v 30 - 32 Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Choir Jesus also said, ‘With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.’ 6 This is the Gospel of the Lord. Choir Please sit The Sermon The Ven Elizabeth Snowden, Archdeacon of Chelmsford Music after the Sermon Organ music Please stand Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 7 We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
