CONNECTIONS UD TO A GUIDE

2014-15

Someone needs you… be a Mentor!

The Volunteer Center of Bergen County sponsors two mentoring programs:

Mentoring Youth volunteers are caring men and women who offer friendship, guidance and support to children with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. Male and Bi-Lingual Spanish-English mentors are especially needed! Mentoring Moms are caring women who provide informal support to mothers who are struggling with the emotional, behavioral and/or practical challenges of raising a family.

Mentors receive ongoing support from program staff. A 12 hour, multi-session training program is provided to all mentoring volunteers. Training takes place evenings at the Volunteer Center of Bergen County in the fall, winter and spring. Training is also available onsite or at corporate or community locations for groups of 5 or more during daytime hours. All prospective mentors are also thoroughly screened, including fingerprinted and background checks as well as personal interview with staff.

Learn new skills · Give back to the community · Meet new people Enhance the life of someone who needs help · Enhance your own life as well!

Call 201-489-9454 or email [email protected] for information about our next mentor training programs.

Matching your talents and interests with the needs of an agency can be a challenging task. The Volunteer Center of Bergen County has developed this comprehensive, user-friendly Guide to Volunteering to help you meet that challenge.

How to Use This Book

On pages 1-46, you will find detailed listings of agencies and volunteer positions for those nonprofit organizations that have chosen to become Agency Members of the Volunteer Center of Bergen County. Agency Members pay a nominal fee ($100 or $50 per year) to be listed in our searchable online database at www.bergenvolunteers.org as well as in this book. On page 47 you will find listings of additional nonprofit organizations that are not Agency Members of the Volunteer Center but that do offer volunteer positions.

Agency Members are listed alphabetically. Each organization’s listing includes contact information, a description of what the agency does, minimum age requirement and a mini-job description for each volunteer position available. Icons indicate which positions are for day, evening or weekend, which are for families or groups, or which can be done at home. Beginning on page 70, there are several indexes where member agencies are cross-referenced to help you with your search. They include:

 Geographic index by town  Area of interest (i.e. animals, environment, homelessness, mentoring, seniors, social services, youth, etc.)  Specific situation index (i.e. family friendly, teens, and court mandated)  Group project ideas  Collection Drives  Donating Goods

When you find a volunteer position in which you are interested, contact the agency directly to find out more about it. Be sure to tell them that you read about the volunteer position in this book. We want to hear from you! Please e-mail your questions or concerns to [email protected] or call us at (201) 489-9454. We will be happy to help you explore other options. Visit our website at www.bergenvolunteers.org. Our searchable online database is continually updated with the most current information.

The Volunteer Center of Bergen County is an affiliate of the Hands On Network, a division of Points of Light.

ii Things to consider before you begin to volunteer:

Time  How much time do you have to volunteer?  How much of a commitment can you make? A one-time project? A week, a month, a year?  Do you want to volunteer alone, with friends, family, or co-workers?

Some questions to ask: Skills/Interests/Experience  Why do you want to volunteer?  What do you want to do?  Do you have interests, hobbies or experience that you want to share?  How do you want to volunteer - directly with people? in an office? on a committee or Board?

Setting  Where would you like to volunteer -- hospital, school, nursing home, office, gift or thrift shop, shelter/soup kitchen, sports/recreation program, camp, park, museum, theater?  How will you get there? Do you need a car? Is it accessible by public transportation?  What kind of atmosphere would you like? Quiet? Fast-paced?  Do you want to volunteer inside or outside?

Who do you want to help?  Infants, pre-schoolers, elementary-, middle- or high-school students, adults, elderly?  People with physical, mental or learning disabilities?  Individuals (one-on-one) or groups of people?

Personal considerations  Do you have any physical or mental limitations that you should consider when choosing a volunteer job?  Do you know someone who would be a reference if you needed one? Have you asked them in advance?

How to interview for a volunteer position  Always be open and honest when you discuss opportunities for volunteer work. The more you and an organization know about each other, the more comfortable you will be in volunteering! Ask lots of questions...  What is the purpose/mission of the organization? What programs/services does the agency offer?  What are the responsibilities of the volunteer job?  What kind of commitment is required?  Will you be trained? By whom? Who will supervise you?  Will you be working with other volunteers? With staff? Alone?  Are there costs involved, such as lunches, meetings, travel, uniform? Will you be reimbursed for your expenses?  What about parking? Do you have to pay?  Does the agency have liability insurance that covers volunteers?  Are there policies and procedures for volunteers?

v Your can make a BIG difference, right here in Bergen County…

Contributing even a small amount to the Volunteer Center of Bergen County can help build a strong community. Your support can help us to help others Do Good and Feel Good through volunteering, and can help to build the capacity for volunteering in our community.

Consider what a donation to the Volunteer Center can do:

$25 helps connect 5 (or more!) people with volunteer opportunities by printing and mailing 5 copies of the Guide to Volunteering to local libraries and schools. The Guide provides information about thousands of volunteering opportunities in Bergen County.

$50 provides a parenting class for 4 low-income mothers who are overwhelmed with struggling to provide for their families and need help with parenting and life skills. Mentors in our Mentoring Moms program provide the support they need to take steps to a brighter future.

$100 will provide tools and supplies for our Chore Service vans. Chore is a service in which crews of volunteer handyman and handywomen provide minor home repairs for the elderly and disabled - free of charge - helping them to live safely in their own homes.

$250 helps recruit and train a volunteer mentor for a child who has experienced abuse and/or neglect. Mentors in our Mentoring Youth program provide guidance and friendship to troubled children ages 3-18.

$500—$1,000 will provide a partial scholarship for an aspiring adult leader with limited income to participate in Bergen LEADS, a 10-month civic engagement and leadership program that prepares the next generation of community leaders.

Thank you for your support!

About the Volunteer Center of Bergen County Do Good….Feel Good

The Volunteer Center of Bergen County was founded by the Junior League of Bergen County in 1966.

Our Mission The Volunteer Center of Bergen County strengthens the community by connecting people through ser- vice and developing civic leaders.

We Value . . .

PEOPLE and believe that through volunteer service people have the capacity to enrich their own lives and improve the quality of life in their communities.

DIVERSITY and recognize that all people have time and talents to share, and that communities are strengthened when people connect across their differences through volunteer service.

COLLABORATION and realize that we are at our best when we collaborate.

EXCELLENCE and commit to implementing innovative and effective strategies, holding our- selves accountable for results, and sharing our knowledge and best practices with others.

Our Programs

Community Services

Every year we facilitate more than 150,000 searches for volunteer opportunities at hundreds of public and private nonprofit agencies in and near Bergen County. We help individuals and groups of every description, including students, school groups, community, civic and faith- based organizations. We publish the popular Guide to Volunteering which lists hundreds of volun- teer opportunities plus “how to’s” and ideas for projects. A wealth of information is also posted online at our website: www.bergenvolunteers.org.

All Wrapped Up Holiday Giving Program provides volunteer donors with “wish lists” from needy fami- lies and individuals during the holiday season; the volunteers then go shopping to provide gifts – every- thing from toys to warm clothing to gift cards. All Wrapped Up annually generates more than $400,000 in resources to help more than 4,000 people during the holidays.

Agency Services We provide trainings to help nonprofit, faith-based and community groups build their capacity to provide services. We offer the popular Volunteer Management Training Series as well as workshops on Board roles and responsibilities.

The Volunteer Center makes it a point to recognize outstanding volunteers for their contributions to our community. Public and private nonprofit agencies, including schools, libraries, hospitals and communi- ties of faith, are invited to bring volunteers to Celebrate Volunteers, a community wide celebration dur- ing National Volunteer Month in April.

Agency Members of the Volunteer Center have their volunteer positions listed in our dynamic search- able online database, have current volunteer needs posted on our home page and receive deep dis- counts for training.

Business Volunteer Connect

Business Volunteer Connect consults with businesses of all sizes who wish to engage employees in the community through volunteer service. From customized volunteer projects to skills-based volun- teering to guidance and expertise on creating or enhancing an employee volunteer program, Business Volunteer Connect provides critical support to anyone tasked with managing employee engagement.

The Business Volunteer Council (BVC) is a dues-supported membership organization open to any company that has or wants to create or enhance an employee engagement program. The focus of the BVC is professional development, networking and sharing of best practices for program managers; BVC member companies also receive many Business Volunteer Connect programs and services at no charge or at a discount.

Direct Volunteer Services

Chore Service is comprised of crews of volunteers who provide minor household repairs to help the elderly and people with disabilities remain safe and living independently in their own homes. There is no charge except for materials. Most of the Chore handypeople – both men and women help – are re- tirees.

Bergen Mentors trains, screens and provides ongoing supervision for adults who serve as mentors in two programs:

Mentoring Youth helps abused and/or neglected children. Men and women serve as mentors, friends, and role models, helping troubled children see and take steps to achieve a brighter future.

Mentoring Moms help low-income mothers who are struggling to provide for their families and who need guidance in parenting and life skills.

Bergen LEADS is a dynamic civic leadership program for 30 adults each year. The year-long curricu- lum tackles the challenging issues affecting Bergen County, helps participants explore and develop their leadership skills, and imparts in each participant a sense of trusteeship for our community. Bergen LEADS alumni remain engaged through forums, service activities and networking events, and share their expertise as speakers, mentors and coaches.

Disaster Response

The VC coordinates the Bergen County VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster), which is an affiliation of community and faith-based organizations that work together to prepare for and respond to disasters. Out of the VOAD has come a multifaceted response to Hurricane Sandy (see page 50).

49 Volunteer Center Program HURRICANE SANDY HELP

The Bergen County VOAD Hurricane Sandy Long Term Recovery Committee (LTRC) is a network of 50+ organizations including nonprofits, government, volunteers, and faith-based organizations, all working together to meet the storm recovery needs of Bergen County residents. Thousands of Bergen County residents were affected by Hurricane Sandy (most with wind, tree, and flood damage), and over 1,000 have applied for help from the LTRC. We provide a broad range of services including home repair, case management, financial as- sistance, replacement of belongings, emotional support, and mold remediation. We are headquartered at the Storm Recovery Information Center located in Moonachie, one the hardest-hit communities in New Jersey. Since the storm, volunteers have contributed nearly 80,000 hours of hard work helping residents and rebuilding communities. Information about our services and members can be found at www.bergenvoad.org.

Meals for Hungry Volunteers: groups are needed to provide lunches for volunteer groups of varying sizes. Delivery will need to be made to work-sites in the affected areas (southern Bergen County). Field Contacts: volunteers are needed to assist the case management staff at the Recovery Information Center in Moonachie. Field Contacts conduct intake interviews, provide information to clients on hurricane recovery resources, and perform other administrative duties like data entry and appointment setting. Field Contacts must be compassionate, patient, and have good listening skills. Volunteer Team Leaders: Experienced and confident volunteers are needed to help lead small groups of other volunteers on small projects doing storm damage repairs. Painting, sanding, waterproofing, and clean ups are typical volunteer jobs. Leaders are mostly needed on weekdays but weekends are also available. Special Events: we have many special volunteer opportunities available throughout the year. To find out about current opportunities, visit our website at www.bergenvoad.org and click on the “Give Help” page. You’ll also be able to register to be notified of future volunteer projects.

Twitter email Web @generationOn [email protected] VOLUNTEER AS A FAMILY It Can Change Your Life!

Volunteering offers your family a chance to spend quality time together. A time to learn, laugh and love together. It offers an opportunity to discuss issues like homelessness, the environment and why some people need more help than others. Volunteering teaches compassion.

Before you begin STEP 1 - Choose a volunteer direction. Decide what type of volunteer activity might in- terest your family. Start with a volunteer activity that is familiar to you; an activity that pre- sents a bit of “a challenge”; or one that lets you blend your skills and interests with new op- portunities.

STEP 2 - Call the agency and find out the age requirements; each agency is different and can accommodate different age groups. Our Guide to Volunteering provides names and phone numbers of agencies in and around Bergen County. It’s also important to find out if what you would like to do fits with the agency’s mission.

Another option is to “invent” a volunteer project of your own. For examples please see the next page.

Is doesn’t matter how big or small your family is. Family volunteering can be done with one parent and a child, or mom and dad can get the entire family involved from kids as young as 6 or 7. Parents, if you have several chil- dren, the time may come when you want to focus on an individual son or daughter. Sharing a volunteer project as a twosome may be the key to helping each child feel as if they are making an impact where they feel most strongly.

So, why do families volunteer?  To meet new people and make new friends  To share family values  To have an impact while getting credit toward school or scholarship goals  To be part of a team  To share talents  To keep skills alive  To build confidence  To relieve stress from their daily routines  To feel proud  To have fun...together!

National Family Volunteer Day is in November! Check out bergenvolunteers.org for our latest family projects!

67 COLLECTIONS

Collections are a great way to really help! Organize a collection in your workplace, school or club and help agencies benefit from the collective efforts of everyone in your group.

Identify a need and identify an agency that will be able to use what you collect. Speak with the agency before you begin your collection to find out specifically what they Useful need, and to make drop-off or pickup arrangements for the Tips items collected.

Set a goal (bags, boxes, pounds) and schedule the collection to take place on a specific date(s). Generally, it is better to conduct a collection over a short time-span so that people in your group will feel some urgency to get the job done.

Make a splash! Hold a kickoff, use props to publicize the drive and use every way possible to tell people about what you’re doing. For instance, wheel in a grocery cart filled with groceries to call attention to the fact that you’re having a food drive. Place an article in your newsletter, put posters on bulletin boards, hand out flyers, put stuffers in paychecks or mailboxes and TALK, TALK, TALK about the collection.

Designate a collection site that is easily accessible to everyone. The spot should be secure so that the items collected reach their intended audience.

Continually update people on the progress of the collection effort, and state how much farther you have to go to reach your goal. Use a “thermometer” chart!

Get as many people as possible involved in getting the items to the agency. If the agency picks up what your group has collected, arrange a welcoming party when they arrive. If you’ll be delivering what you’ve collected to the agency, take as many people as possible along for the ride. Don’t forget the camera – this is a perfect photo op!

After it’s all over, make sure to thank everyone who participated and let them know how successful the drive was. Include how much was collected, any photos and thank you letters or feedback from the agency.

Evaluate your efforts, talk about what worked and what needs improvement, and then start planning for your next collection!

Remember – contact the agency BEFORE you begin to collect!
