Austin AIDS Ordinance Challenged by John Touchet RACE, an Austin citizens' group's has requested repeal of the anti-AIDS discrimination ordinance acx:ording to the January 30 edition of the Daily Tsxan. RACE is a coalition including CAP (Citizens Against Pornography), Austin Grass Roots Coalition, and Austin Area Pastors' Association. Sam Hoerster, spokesman for RACE has threatened a lawsuit against the city if the ordinance is not repealed. RACE presents itself as a public interest group formed to protect the public health from the threat of AIDS and Tuberculosis. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is acquired only through the exchange of body fluids either during sex or blood transfusion. Tuberculosis (TB) can be easily spread and is highly contagious in its commonly-known form. Unbeknownst to RACE, persons with AIDS contrad a rare form of TB which is not contagious, according to Dr. Phil Zbylot of the Austin/Travis County Health Department. Discrimination complaints are being compiled for reports to the city.
