In planning these works, we Map B 3 have tried to keep open at least one long distance route between north and Map C 4 south, but regret this has not always been possible owing to the extent of the works. Map D 5 Map E 6 Preventative maintenance such as replacing culverts and repairing bridges Map F 7 are another feature of the programme and these also require stoppages of the waterways. Increasingly we are planning these further ahead in order Stoppage Table 8-18 to reduce emergency closures. Winter Opening Hours 19-22 As in previous years, some of this year’s stoppages are a result of other organisations’ investment in infrastructure, with the Highways Agency and Other Navigation Authorities 22 Network Rail needing access to some of our waterways for the construction or improvement of bridges. Office Contact Details 23 If your cruising plans are particularly time sensitive, we strongly recommend that you confirm dates with the local waterway office before you set off. Most stoppages start early on Monday mornings and finish late afternoon or early evening on Fridays. Please do not plan your passage until Saturday morning. Winter opening hours Please see pages 19 - 22 for winter opening hours. Staying up to date with the latest stoppage information Unforeseen circumstances inevitably mean that occasionally we have to cancel, postpone, extend or create new stoppages to deal with operational problems, but we have put in place improved systems to keep you up to date. Waterscape.com is updated with the latest stoppage information as it happens. You can browse stoppage listings on the website, or download the latest version in PDF or spreadsheet form (CSV). • simply point your browser to www.waterscape.com/boating and click ‘Stoppages and restrictions’ • from the same page, you can also subscribe to regular email stoppage updates • or to view the information on the move, if you have a WAP-enabled mobile phone, go to www.waterscape.com/mobile You can find much more boating information in Waterscape.com’s new Boaters’ Guides – navigate the site to the waterway you want, then click ‘Boating’ on the left. It took 7 years of labor, slowly clawing shovels of earth from the ground in a 363-mile trek across the wilderness of New York State. Through the use of many references, this paper attempts to describe this remarkable construction project. Additionally, it describes the early operation of the canal and its impact on the daily life on or near the canal‘s winding path across the state.

AUGUST 2020 The monthly newsletter published by the Near the “Dirty Duck” Pub Photographed by Tony Osbond Please note that all images in this document are the copyright of either the photographer or The Grantham Canal Society. This month’s update from Mike Stone (Chairman) Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho, It's back to work we go All dressed in our own PPE with CRT life vest. The grass grows even higher, the locks are leaking too. Weeds stopped the trip-boat moving; we didn’t know what to do Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho We dig up stuff on Fridays we lift out branches too, We’re getting a new weed boat soon but drivers needed too As volunteers on this canal there’s so much work to do Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho, It's back to work we go .... Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho, Heigh-ho! Don’t just sing alone – come and join us - Heigh-ho! Heigh-ho! (No height restriction!) Thanks to you, our supporters, we have achieved our target to raise £20,000 to enable the restoration of the slipway at the Depot. This is a brilliant result in four months and the Society says a big THANK YOU to all who contributed. Restoration work will commence early in October – Heigh-ho! Within the coming week we look forward to the delivery of a new, to us, weed-boat from The Rothen Group. Which, by the way, hasn't been named yet - see p10. This will enable us to remove the extensive weed growth from the navigation and, I hope, permit The Three Shires charter cruises to re-commence operation.

  • Coarse Fishing Close Season on English Rivers
Coarse fishing close season on English rivers Appendix 1 – Current coarse fish close season arrangements The close season on different waters In England, there is a coarse fish close season on all rivers, some canals and some stillwaters. This has not always been the case. In the 1990s, only around 60% of the canal network had a close season and in some regions, the close season had been dispensed with on all stillwaters. Stillwaters In 1995, following consultation, government confirmed a national byelaw which retained the coarse fish close season on rivers, streams, drains and canals, but dispensed with it on most stillwaters. The rationale was twofold: • Most stillwaters are discrete waterbodies in single ownership. Fishery owners can apply bespoke angling restrictions to protect their stocks, including non-statutory close times. • The close season had been dispensed with on many stillwaters prior to 1995 without apparent detriment to those fisheries. This presented strong evidence in favour of removing it. The close season is retained on some Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads, as a precaution against possible damage to sensitive wildlife - see Appendix 1. This consultation is not seeking views on whether the close season should be retained on these stillwaters While most stillwater fishery managers have not re-imposed their own close season rules, some have, either adopting the same dates as apply to rivers or tailoring them to their waters' specific needs. Canals The Environment Agency commissioned a research project in 1997 to examine the evidence around the close season on canals to identify whether or not angling during the close season was detrimental to canal fisheries.
