Part II: Individual Success Stories

201305***

201305*** is a USP III student majoring in Civil Engineering. She was born and raised in the town of Tyre and graduated from the Official Secondary School of Abbasiyeh.

During her school years, she was the first in her class and was ranked the twelfth in Lebanon during the official exams.

201305*** was never appreciated and congratulated by her fellow classmates, on the contrary, they used to bully her and circulate rumors that she is cheating and receiving special treatment seeing that both her parents worked in her school.

Add to her academic excellence, 201305*** participated in many competitions organized by Korean UN, UNESCO and was selected by USAID to join the USP family in the Lebanese American University to major in Civil Engineering.

At first, the whole concept, of studying in a language that she never studied before and moving to an environment unknown to her, scared her. But once again, she was able to prove that success comes within the person with her 3.88 GPA.

Moreover, 201305*** is very active when it comes to civic engagement, she participated in Beach Cleaning campaigns, ran in Beirut Marathon and aided in the assessment of technology in public schools managed by the Derasaty Program.

201305*** loves to summarize her achievements in a quote that she applies in her daily life: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” – Mahatma Ghandi.

22

201304***

Born and raised in the town of Barja, 201304*** attended the Official Secondary School of Barja.

Her academic performance during her school years was excellent. That’s what made her eligible to be amongst the students accepted to join the Access 7 program organized by USAID for two years.

During her enrollment, 201304*** attended many workshops and worked intensively to improve her communication, team work and leadership skills.

Currently 201304*** is a USP III student majoring in Computer Engineering. She continues to thrive and prosper at the Lebanese American University on all levels where she maintains an outstanding academic standing being a Distinction student with a GPA of 3.54 while being heavily involved in leadership and civic engagement programs.

Being a USP student motivated her to volunteer in “Mercy Corps” NGO and work on a project aiming to stop violence between children.

With the beginning of Fall 2016, 201304*** faced a health problem that needed immediate surgery and care. The procedure was risky to an extent that it would paralyze her for life. However, 201304*** never gave up and her strong will aided her in overcoming the risk and returning to the university after missing a whole semester.

After the tough ordeal she went through for month, 201304*** kept believing that she can overcome her problem and use it to grow stronger. That’s the reason why she lives her daily life by the famous quote of Nelson Mandela: “It always seems impossible until it's done”.

2.2 Community Service Project:

“Self-development and Leadership Skills” Location: Yanta Public School Date: Saturday, May 6, 2017 Scholars’ Information Scholar Name Cohort Public School Residency Major Official Secondary Marjayoun, 201304*** USP III Civil Engineering School of Al Nabatieh Manara Purpose of Project The purpose of the project is to train students in public speaking and shed light on conflict- resolution and bullying. It helps them become more confident while performing a public speech and alerts them on how they should avoid conflicts and bullying. The presentation that 201304*** presented at the school shed the light on how students should be using the specific techniques in order to deliver a good public speech by presenting them with a game where each student chose a paper that presents an emotion that a student should act in order for the others to guess; this way students will be more comfortable and confident due to practice and using body language. As for the Conflict resolution, students played games in groups by which they should imagine themselves at an Island in which they should agree as a group on which tools to carry with them. This game sparked a discussion and an argument among the students: some made a conflict and some had the chance to win the argument.

24

The main purpose here is to learn how they can communicate and convince each other without conflict. Moreover, the students watched a short movie of a girl who’s a bullying victim at her school. The girl was desperate until a kind friend started helping her out. The objective behind the movie is to tell the students that if they don’t accept to be bullied then they shouldn’t accept it on others. The project was done for students in the Yanta Public School from grade 5 to grade 8 with the help of Yanta Youth Club. The students were interacting in a positive way and were motivated to answer. Some of the students went on the stage to say poems as an example of public speaking.

Childhood Matters Location: Batha (near Bzommar) Date: Wednesday, May 10, 2017 Scholars’ Information Scholar Name Cohort Public School Residency Major Official Tabarja, Mechanical 201305*** USP III Secondary Kesrwen Engineering School of Official 201305*** USP III Secondary Ghazir, Kesrwen Mathematics School of Ghazir Purpose of Project The purpose of the project was to raise awareness against bullying, ways to improve the self- esteem and how to properly respond to bullying. It was directed to female orphans between the ages of four and 18. After having lunch with the orphans there were two ice breaker activities where orphans and project planner 201305*** and the psychologist got to know each other’s more, and the girls became more friendly and attentive. Thereafter, interactive group activities were done with the kids under the age of 12 in order to raise awareness against bullying and its side effects on the bullied. 201305*** & 201305*** helped the girls through the activities and guided them through the drawing and the collage. They explained each step. The moral of the activity was to show the damage bulling causes and to help them develop self-esteem as a defense mech201304***m. Girls who are older than 12 years old were given an interactive workshop with a psychologist about physical development, bodily changes, relationships and sexual orientation. These topics were discussed through different activities. Images and visual aids were distributed. The information was delivered smoothly starting with a relaxation activity and different steps to follow to reach an understandable conclusion with the girls. Thus, the discussions were smooth and there was no aggressiveness throughout the debates and the interpretations. The scholars and the psychologist in addition to two volunteers spent the day at the Orphanage. The girls were very interactive with them through the physical, art and lecture activities. Toward the end of the day 201305***and 201305*** distributed the evaluation forms and explained the questions to their target group given that they don’t understand English. They thanked everyone for their cooperation.

“If things go wrong, don’t go with them.” Location: Kamal Salhab Official Secondary School-Ain Baal Date: Thursday May 11, 2017 Scholars’ Information Scholar Name Cohort Public School Residency Major Official Secondary 201303*** USP III Tyre Nursing School of Tyre for Boys Official Secondary 201404*** USP III Tyre Nursing School of Ain Baal Purpose of Project The purpose of the project is to raise awareness on drugs and alcohol addiction for the age group ranging between 15 to 17 years old. It helps students become more aware of their behavior especially at their age. The presentation that 201303***, 201404***and their fellow USP V Scholar 201404***, presented at the school shed light on how students should be careful not to fall under peer pressure in using drugs and alcohol substances. They began by defining addiction then proceeded with a presentation that was divided into two parts: Alcohol and Drugs. Each part had its consequences. At the end, a brochure was given to students in order to help them know if their friends are a victim of addiction or not. The students were interactive as the exposure to drugs and alcohol addiction is a daily pressure they face. The activities played taught them skills in identifying drug and alcohol addicts. Furthermore, they learned how to resist peer pressure in using these substances. In addition, they became knowledgeable in the approaches they should use with drug and alcohol addicts to be able to offer them the aid and assistance they need, and how to convince them to seek professional help. The students were very satisfied with the information they received from the scholars.

"Fast drive could be last drive” Location: Official Secondary School of Baissour Date: Friday, May 12, 2017 Scholars’ Information Scholar Name Cohort Public School Residency Major Official Secondary 201404*** USP III Aley Biology School of Baissour Purpose of Project The purpose of the project is to inform and raise awareness about driving safety. It helps them become aware that irresponsible driving affects, not only the driver himself, but many innocent lives on the roads. The awareness campaign that 201404***and her fellow USP V scholar 201404*** organized at the school with the help of USP volunteers stresses on the effects of drinking and texting while driving, the dangers encountered while driving and the importance of knowing the emergency contact numbers in Lebanon. The students watched a short movie portraying many cases of people making the deadly mistake and getting distracted for a few seconds from the road to reach their ringing phone or to answer a phone call. The massive increase in the number of road accidents especially among teen drivers have influenced the life of 201404*** and 201404*** to become potential leaders in their community, so they decided to work with “YASA NGO” to help them in implementing their project. Around 100 students along with their teachers’ and school principal at Official Secondary School of Baissour attended the awareness campaign. A volunteer from “YASA” asked the students to volunteer in an entertaining activity that demonstrates what really happens when driving under the effect of alcohol. The students were asked to walk on a white straight line drawn on the floor with goggles on their eyes. The goggles show an impaired image. The students were not able to walk steadily on the line and hit what was on the sides. They became convinced that it’s impossible to focus on the road when drunk. All of this was done to help them improve their driving skills and ethics.
