Lindsey Wilson College shows the depth of its love for education and the student body with its statement, “Every Student, Every Day.” The Alpha Kappa Phi Review is an extension of this mindset, with an interest in the work of all students at Lindsey Wilson College. This journal contains a broad range of student essays. These essays span a wide variety of topics and academic disciplines, including detailed analyses of works by major authors and solutions for pressing societal concerns that have major implications on our world today. All of the essays that appear in the Alpha Kappa Phi Review have gone through a rigorous peer-review selection and revision process resulting in the inclusion of only works that achieve the highest excellence. All of the essays rely on secondary research and/or extensive textual evidence to support their analyses and claims. The Review has sought to include a wide variety of writing from Lindsey Wilson’s student body with this grouping, encompassing the work of sophomores to upcoming graduates. This volume includes nine student essays on a variety of topics from politics to literature to methods of academic writing. The reader will find the essays organized thematically, not alphabetically, into four different groups. The three foremost essays included in this volume address the topic of discord in politics. Although Kaylie Butler, Zack Settle, and Richard Nichols each approach the topic from diverse viewpoints and disciplines, each essay discusses the importance of considering varying political approaches. The next three essays, by Macy Rattliff, Avery Crews, and Hannah VanArsdale, examine the implications and stakes of representation when making art from or memorializing a time period or historical event. The authors, through the incorporation of critical theory, examine facets of culture such as news media portrayals of 9/11, governmental responses to in the Salem witch trials, and artistic representations of the Holocaust, respectively. The next two essays—by Justin Sturgeon and Emma Turner—both perform textual analyses of literary works that emphasize the role of reader empathy in interpretation. The final essay included in this volume, written by Paige Enlow, is a hybrid form of academic writing combining secondary sources with the genre of a diary entry to question and challenge conventional academic style. The Alpha Kappa Phi Review is devoted to publishing the best student scholarly work that Lindsey Wilson College has to offer. For more information, please contact Dr. Karolyn Steffens, Assistant Professor of English and Faculty Editor: [email protected]. 5 Communication and Collaboration in American Politics Kaylie Butler Abstract It is important to examine the power and presence of the Democrat and Republican parties within American politics. In an effort to understand the politics of American government, this paper explains the purpose of political parties, the origins of parties in America, the evolution of the dominant bi-partisan parties, and the current state of American politics through a variety of scholarly sources. By exploring extent literature, this paper dissects the various issues presented within the bi-partisan American political landscape. Additionally, through the exploration of the interrelationship between the American political research and critical thinking and communication concepts, this paper provides an approach to resolve the American political issues of present day. The political landscape of modern America has been dominated by two prominent political parties: Democrat and Republican. For better or worse, these parties have become the backbone and driving force of political America. Originally intended to unite individuals and make positive change, it is ironic that the majority of the issues presented within American politics today appear to have arisen as a consequence of congressional members’ loyalty to their respective political party or personal agendas rather than to the betterment of the United States and its inhabitants. This train of thought is apparent through politicians and their actions in discussion of recent political events, such as President Trump’s immigration policy attempts. The pre-existing tension between the two parties is increasing at an alarming rate due to this misplaced loyalty. Further, the tension between the political parties and their members has escalated to the point that the United States government, and its multitude of employees, has had to endure a shutdown that lasted approximately a month. In order to find a solution, the attention should be directed toward understanding the purpose, origins, and goals of the political parties throughout history. Tracing the original intent of the parties and its members will bring enlightenment concerning their strength and function within society today. Further, by gaining a firm foundation of knowledge regarding the parties, the formation of a prescriptive plan to benefit their functions can begin to take place. This solution to the various issues posed by the modern American political party system can be alleviated through 6 the application of the critical thinking and leadership concepts to the party leaders and also the voting public. Overall, by applying these concepts within American politics, the leadership of the bipartisan parties will become more collaborative with one another. Additionally, the leaders of the parties and their backing voters will have a more harmonious relationship in which voters will feel better represented. Literature Review Through extent literature, a variety of research has been provided regarding the purpose, origins, evolution, and current state of the American political system. The sources reveal various foundational issues within the American political system and demonstrate the translation of these problems into contemporary society. By tracing the roots of political parties and understanding the current divisions within modern American politics, a foundation will be provided for the application of a solution to the multitude of issues found within the contemporary political landscape.     Donald Trump Shoots the Match1 Sharon Mazer The day I realized it can be smart to be shallow was, for me, a deep experience. —Donald J. Trump (2004; in Remnick 2017:19) I don’t care if it’s real or not. Kill him! Kill him! 2 He’s currently President of the USA, but a scant 10 years ago, Donald Trump stepped into the squared circle, facing off against WWE owner and quintessential heel Mr. McMahon3 in the “Battle of the Billionaires” (WrestleMania XXIII). The stakes were high. The loser would have his head shaved by the winner. (Spoiler alert: Trump won.) Both Trump and McMahon kept their suits on—oversized, with exceptionally long ties—in a way that made their heads appear to hover, disproportionately small, over their bulky (Trump) and bulked up (McMahon) bodies. As avatars of capitalist, patriarchal power, they left the heavy lifting to the gleamingly exposed, hypermasculinist bodies of their pro-wrestler surrogates. McMahon performed an expert heel turn: a craven villain, egging the audience to taunt him as a clueless, elitist frontman as he did the job of casting Trump as an (unlikely) babyface, the crowd’s champion. For his part, Trump seemed more mark than smart. Where McMahon and the other wrestlers were working around him, like ham actors in an outsized play, Trump was shooting the match: that is, not so much acting naturally as neglecting to act at all. He soaked up the cheers, stalked the ring, took a fall, threw a sucker punch, and claimed victory as if he (and he alone) had fought the good fight (WWE 2013b).

Trump, although foretold by Matt Groening’s The Simpsons,1 was a surprise to many.2 But the shock, disbelief, and horror were especially acute for the intelligentsia. They were told, guaranteed really, that there was no way for Trump to win. Yet he prevailed, pulling off what poker aficionados might call a back- door draw in the Electoral College. Since his victory, the reverberations, commotions, and uproars have never ended. Some of these were Trump’s own doing and some were hyped-up controversies. We have endured so many bombshells and pur- ported bombshells that most of us are numb. As one crisis or scandal sputters to a pathetic end, the next has already commenced. There has been too much fear, rage, fire, and fury, rendering it impossible for many to make sense of it all. Some Americans sensibly tuned out, missing the breathless nightly reports of how the latest scandal would doom Trump or why his tormentors would soon get their comeuppance. Nonetheless, our reality TV President is ratings gold for our political talk shows. In his Foreword, Professor Michael Klarman, one of America’s fore- most legal historians, speaks of a degrading democracy.3 Many difficulties plague our nation: racial and class divisions, a spiraling debt, runaway entitlements, forever wars, and, of course, the coronavirus. We are making a stakeholder’s submission in our capacity as a political party of the pro-democracy camp in Hong Kong for the 2018 Universal Periodic Review on the People's Republic of China (PRC), and in particular, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). Currently, our party has five members elected to the Hong Kong Legislative Council, the unicameral legislature of HKSAR. 2. In the Universal Periodic Reviews of PRC in 2009 and 2013, not much attention was paid to the human rights, political, and social developments in the HKSAR, whilst some positive comments were reported on the HKSAR situation. i We wish to highlight that there have been substantial changes to the actual implementation of human rights in Hong Kong since the last reviews, which should be pinpointed for assessment in this Universal Periodic Review. In particular, as a pro-democracy political party with members in public office at the Legislative Council (LegCo), we wish to draw the Council’s attention to issues related to the political structure, election methods and operations, and the exercise of freedom and rights within and outside the Legislative Council in HKSAR.     Hong Kong’s disaffected youths – Is the criticism warranted? December 7, 2016 Jacinta Keast Sixtus ‘Baggio’ Leung and Yau Wai-ching, two young legislators from the localist Youngspiration party, have been barred from Hong Kong’s legislative council (LegCo). Never has China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) jumped to an interpretation on a matter in Hong Kong without a prior request from the local government or courts. This comes after the pair modified their oaths, including enunciating the word ‘China’ as ‘Cheena’ (支那), a derogatory term used by the Japanese in World War II, using expletives to refer to the People’s Republic of China, and waving around blue ‘Hong Kong is not China’ banners at their swearing in. Commentators, including those from the pan-democratic side of the legislature, have called their behaviour infantile, ignorant and thuggish, and have demanded ‘that the hooligans be locked up’. But is this criticism warranted? A growing tide of anti-Mainlander vitriol has been building in Hong Kong since it was handed back to the People’s Republic of China in 1997 under a special constitution termed The Basic Law. In theory, the constitution gave Hong Kong special privileges the Mainland did not enjoy—a policy called ‘One Country, Two Systems’. But in practice, more and more Hong Kong residents feel that the long arm of Beijing’s soft power is extending over the territory. The Occupy movement and later the 2014 Umbrella Revolution began once it was revealed that the Chinese government would be pre-screening candidates for the 2017 Hong Kong Chief Executive election, the election for Hong Kong’s top official.

A main obstacle to this providentially positive potentiality is the strong opposition to such an eminently salubrious status by “conservative” rich people who want our economic and political systems to remain rigged astonishingly generously in their favor, so that they are able to gain an ever increasing monopoly on the profits made through the exploitation of working people and natural resources. A well-informed electorate is a prerequisite for ensuring that a democracy is healthy, and thereby offers all its citizens truly reasonable representation. This simple understanding makes both humorous and viscerally provocative a political cartoon by David Sipress that appeared in New Yorker magazine soon after the 2016 elections. In this cartoon, a woman ruefully observes to her male companion, "My desire to be well-informed is currently at odds with my desire to remain sane." Ha! Tens of millions of Americans find themselves in this predicament today, as the Donald Trump soap opera, crime saga, healthcare treachery, and interlude of authority abuses becomes increasingly dysfunctional, anxiety inducing and deadly -- and as Trump becomes more unhinged, sinisterly authoritarian and threatening to individual liberties, national security and our greatest American values.
