The method is based on the link of developmental stages of arthropods, especially of blowfly larvae, to their age. The major advantage against the standard methods for the determination of the early postmortem interval (by the classical forensic pathological methods such as body temperature, post- mortem lividity and rigidity, and chemical investigations) is that arthropods can represent an accurate measure even in later stages of the postmortem in- terval when the classical forensic pathological methods fail. Theclinae were not included by K. J. Hayward in his major studies of Argentine butterflies, " Lepidopteros Argentinos" (1931·1934), " Hesperioidea Argentina" (1937-1950), " Satiridos Argentinos" (1953·1962), " Hesperiidarum Argentinarum Cata!ogus" (1941), '"Catalogos' de los Ropaloceros Argentinos" (1950-1963, 1973) and his contributions to " Del genera et species animalium Argentinorum" (1948-1967). His treatment of Argentine lycaenid butterflies was limited to short papers describing some of the more obvious new taxa from the region (1949, 1967) or comment on taxa characterizing particular localities (1965). Hayward resided in northwestern Argentina, first in Sante Fe Province and later in Tucuman. As a result, the northwestern Argentine locales are well-represented in Hayward's collections at the British Museum (Natural History) (BMNH) and the Instituto Miguel Lillo (Tucuman [Anglicized hereafter], Argentina, IML). At BMNH much of his material is still unsorted and unincorporated. The Theclinae were never a priority for Hayward, apparently because their Neotropical taxonomy is so poorly known. -

The correct generic name for the species that belong to Eucharia Boisduval, 1870, a homonym, is either Annamaria D’Abrera & Bálint, 2001, which has been considered to be unavailable, or Lamasina Robbins, 2002, a replacement name for Eucharia. A recent re-interpretation of the original description of Annamaria was incorrect, and Annamaria is confirmed as being unavailable under Article 13.1 of the Code. A proposed neotype for Papilio ganimedes Cramer, 1775 is invalidated, and a possible syntype is illustrated. Results of an analysis of variation in the Lamasina ganimedes complex are distinctly different from those previously published and provide insufficient evidence to support the hypothesis that L. lathyi (Bálint, 2005) is distinct under a biological species concept. Lamasina lathyi is a synonym of L. ganimedes syn. nov. Statistical evidence overwhelmingly falsifies the published hypothesis that the L. rhaptissima (Johnson, 1991) (14 males) and L. columbia (Bálint, 2005) (8 females) species complexes are distinct rather than males and females of the same complex. Lamasina columbia is endemic to western Colombia. The hypothesis that L. rhapsodia (Bálint, 2005) from Bolivia is a distinct species is not better supported than the hypotheses that the one known specimen of L. -

Checklists of the butterflies (Lepidoptera) collected in two rainforest study sites in the Tuxtlas Mts., Veracruz, Mexico are presented. A total of 182 species of butterflies were recorded at Laguna Encantada, near San Andres Tuxtla, and 212 species were recorded from the nearby Estacion de Biologia Tropical “Los Tuxtlas” (EBITROLOTU). We collected 33 species not included in G. Ross’ (1975–77) faunistic treatment of the region, 12 of which are new species records for the Tuxtlas. We present a list of the skipper butterflies (Hesperioidea) of the Tuxtlas, including a state record for the giant skipper, Agathymus rethon. At both study sites, we observed seasonal patterns in species abundance during periods of reduced precipitation. Our data indicate an apparent increase in butterfly species-richness in the Tuxtlas over the last 25 years. This increase reflects more efficient sampling due to advances in lepidopteran ecology and improved collecting methods, as well as the effects of habitat disturbance. A comparison between the butterfly faunas of the two rainforest sites revealed that a higher percentage of weedy, cosmopolitan species were present at Laguna Encantada, the smaller, more disturbed site. We anticipate further changes in butterfly species-richness and faunal composition as the mosaic of habitats in the Tuxtlas continue to be modified. -

In autumn, the moths return to their breeding grounds, where they mate, lay eggs and die. These moths can use visual cues in combination with the geomagnetic field to guide their flight, but how these cues are processed and integrated in the brain to drive migratory behavior is unknown. To generate an access point for functional studies, we provide a detailed description of the Bogong moth’s brain. Based on immunohistochemical stainings against synapsin and serotonin (5HT), we describe the overall layout as well as the fine structure of all major neuropils, including the regions that have previously been implicated in compass-based navigation. The resulting average brain atlas consists of 3D reconstructions of 25 separate neuropils, comprising the most detailed account of a moth brain to date. -
