PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Chairperson’s Report 2017-2018 As the 2017-2018 school year comes to an end, I can state the Prince Edward Island School Athletic Association (PEISAA) has been making positive progress to fit the needs of our current student athletes. The year started off with an employment search for a new School Sport Coordinator and the Department of Education, Early Learning and Culture invited me to be a part of that process. Phil Bridges was the successful candidate and on behalf of the PEISSA; congratulations. I also would like to recognize all the work and dedication that our past School Sport Coordinator, Craig Watson, did for the PEISAA. Craig, all the best in your future endeavors. First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge Phil Bridges, the PEISAA School Sport Coordinator for his continued and tiresome work. Phil has brought forth many changes to our Organization to ensure financial and operational stability for years to come. Also, thank you to the PEISAA Executive, Commissionaires, member schools, and all other paid employees and volunteers for your dedication and hard work fostering an educational learning environment through sport to our Island students. On Sunday, May 13th, 2018, Brodie George McCarthy, a PEISAA student athlete from Montague Regional High, passed away at the Moncton City Hospital in Moncton, New Brunswick. Brodie suffered a life threating injury while participating in a rugby tournament on Saturday, May 12th, 2018. The PEISAA sends our deepest condolences to everyone whom was affected. Starting in the 2018-2019 school year, the PEISAA will be launching a new website through a partnership with Goalline. The new website will be mobile friendly, have more features, and provide the PEISAA with more control on the back end of the website content. Like any new procedure or product, it will be a learning curve for some, but overall, the implementation of the new PEISAA website will be an asset. For the past several years, the PEISAA is currently working towards developing a strategic plan. Insite Marketing and MRSB prepared a proposal to make this a reality. The Department of Education, Early Learning and Culture are also currently in the process of deciding if the PEISAA could be added to their own strategic plan. Once all feedback is in place, the PEISAA Executive will decide what direction it will take. I strongly voice my concern that the development of a strategic plan is continued. In my opinion, the biggest task in which the PEISAA has engaged with this year was an overhaul of our policy and procedures manual. Some policies needed to be updated to reflect our current student athletes. Some notable changes were: student eligibility, gender identity, student transfers, affiliated players, and minimum coach’s qualifications. Thank you to Phil Bridges and Darryl Boudreau for your involvement in reviewing this. The amendments to the policy and procedures manual are scheduled to be implemented during the 2018-2019 school year. I am pleased to announce that the PEISAA has acquired numerous corporate sponsorship partners this past year. Moving forward, we will continue to develop corporate partnerships to further promote our sports within the community. The PEISAA looks forward in working with all PEISAA stakeholders to foster sporting opportunities for our Island students. Submitted by Trent Ranahan

4. GENERAL COMMENTS  This season of Senior Men’s Baseball went extremely well. Weather cooperated wonderfully, all teams either played their games when originally scheduled or made up games between each other if a game had to be rescheduled. TOSH and Westisle were strong, Charlottetown Rural was a notch below, while all other teams were relatively similar at the bottom three. Both semi-final games were excellent. In comparison to last season, this season was a joy to be commissioner.  All coaches and players I spoke to were very happy with the season structure – five games over two weekends and then semi-finals/final on the Thursday evening after. The schedule worked well this season.  With the schedule changes throughout the season, the school ADs were extremely patient, understanding, and accommodating. I would like to thank them very much!  This season of PEISAA Senior Men’s Baseball was the best one yet in my opinion, in terms of teams getting games in, no issues discipline or otherwise, and schools being cooperative.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

After a few schools had to drop out prior to the season beginning, the baseball season actually went fairly well. In a couple cases games had to be forfeited or worth double points but for the most part the schedule was followed. Player availability was an issue for most teams as minor ball tryouts and games were in full swing.

Thank you to Mike Richards, the officials assignor. He was great to work with and went with the flow of schedule changes. He also came up big finding umpires to work the earlier games in Summerside for the provincials.

Also thank you to Christopher Drummond from the City of Charlottetown who is in charge of field bookings. He was very accommodating and ensured that fields were in good shape for games.

PEISAA Senior Soccer FINAL REPORT 2017-18

Commissioner: (Andrew MacAdam)

1. SPORT PARTICIPATION NUMBERS Male 14 teams and approximately 240 players Female 13 teams and approximately 220 players. We had 6 AAA Male teams, 5 AAA Female teams, and 8 each of A Male and Female teams. 2. GENERAL COMMENTS The 2017 Fall Soccer Season was very entertaining and generally each division had its share of competitiveness. Game reporting was the best since taking on the commissionership. There was only one or two games not reported, so we are not perfect. Once again, there were games the Friday before the season was complete (even though it was discouraged), making for a scramble over the weekend to get teams to where they needed to be. On a positive note, the AAA Men had major implications of 4 of the 6 teams because of that one game, making the league very competitive. I want to commend Cory Deagle and Trevor Bridges for their tireless work assigning referees to the games, which have to be played at awkward times due to the availability of light. Last season there were 60 cards given out, without doing an official count, I would say we are down to about half of that, which is a tremendous improvement in behavior from the players.

Below is a summary of the medal games. Followed by the standings and play-off matchups and scores.

Senior Soccer Bronze Medal Games – October 27, 2017 On Friday, October 27, 2017, the Senior soccer finals for the PEI School Athletic Association took place at the Terry Fox Complex Turf Fields. Games began at 3:00 between the A Men from Evangeline (#6) and Ecole Francois Buote (#2). Francois Buote opened the wide-opened affair at the 8 minute mark when Nick Brown scored. Evangeline’s Bryce Corkum replied 4 minutes later with a goal of his own. Evan Gallant of Evangeline would chip in two more goals before the half to put Evangeline up 3-1. In the second half, Francois Boute could not mount any kind of offense against a strong wind, and Evangeline were able to capitalize on the wind. Chad Arseneault at the 67 minute, Joel Gallant at the 73rd minute, and Dominick Bernard at the 83rd minute finished off the scoring for Evangeline for the 6-1 lop-sided win. In the A Women’s game, the #2 Seeded Morell Marlins were playing #5 Montague. Morell’s leading scorer throughout the season opened the scoring in the first half. Bailey MacLean added a goal in the first half to keep the lead at half time at 2-0. MacLean added another in the second half to make the final 3-0 for the Lady Marlins. Emily Sanderson picked up the shut out for Morell. The AAA Women’s game featured two teams from the west, (#5) Three Oaks from Summerside and (#2) Westisle from Elmsdale. Westisle’s Tori Hogan opened the scoring in the 7th minute of the game. That goal would hold up until the last minute of the half when Taylor Gillis would put home a goal to tie the game going into the break. Gillis would continue to wreak havoc with the Three Oaks defense in the second half as she score 2 minutes into the second half, in which would prove to be the winning goal for Three Oaks. Gillis would pick up the hat trick at the 64th minute and Hillary Gaudet would add a fourth goal for Three Oaks to complete the scoring and finish with a 4-1 win in favor of Three Oaks. The AAA Men’s Bronze Medal game pitted #2 Westisle against #5 Charlottetown Rural. I what would be a fast paced, but cautious game, both teams had a few chances to score in the first half, however, Rural’s Noah MacNeill and Westisle’s Hayden Porter were up for the task keeping the score knotted at Zeros. Karim Itari opened the scoring in the game at the 68th minute putting Rural ahead 1-0. It would only take 7 minutes for

Westisle’s Tristan Cahill to tie the game at one. Both teams continued to press for the winning goal, however, it looked like the game was going to overtime. Just shy of two minutes into added time, Charlottetown Rural were awarded a free kick outside the penalty area and to the right. Simon Bitar hit a hard shot low to the far post that resulted in a scramble in front of the Westisle keeper. Before the dust would settle, Felix Therioult would boot the ball into the back of the net. Rural would capture the bronze medal with a 2-1 victory over Westisle.

Senior Soccer Finals In the Senior Women’s A Finals, #1 seed Kishora (Kensington and Kinkora combined team) met #3 seed Rural in the final. The game was well played by both teams. There many scoring chances for each team, however, no goals were scored in regulation. After 2 addition periods of 15 minutes, nothing was decided. In penalty kicks, the Rural keeper stole the show as she stopped 2 of 4 shots. In the end, Rural outscored Kishora 3-1 in penalty kicks to win the A Women’s Gold medal game 1-0. In the Senior Men’s A Finals, the #1 seed Col. Gray Colonels met # 4 Charlottetown Rural Raiders in the final. Again, the game was a well-played, competitive match. Rural came out with a goal from Dawson Hughes with 6 minutes left in the half. Gray came out with several chances in the second half however, Rural were the team to score as Hughes added his second of the game in the 67th minute to make the final score 2-0. The Senior AAA Women’s game feature cross town rivals, #3 seed Col. Gray Colonels and #1 seed Charlottetown Rural Raiders. The Raiders were heavily favored in the game as they were undefeated in in League play. In the first half, Rural came out strong with sustained pressure which paid off with an Emily Cormier goal 6 minutes into the half. Rural continued to press and were rewarded with 3 more goals in the half. At the 19 minute mark Maddie Hurley added her first of the half, and her second of the half at the 21st minute mark. Cormier added her second of the half at the 31st minute mark. Gray had some pressure to end the half, but could not capitalize on their chances. The second half was a more balanced game, however, both keepers played well. Charlottetown Rural were able to put a long free kick in with 3 minutes left in the game to recapture their gold medal. The Senior AAA Men’s game saw #1 Col. Gray Colonels play #3 Bluefield Bobcats playing for gold. Both teams exchanged chances throughout the first half, however, Bluefield was able to capitalize on a Connor Reardon header at the 36 minute mark to take the lead, which they held onto until the half. 11 minutes into the second half, Col. Gray tied the game off a scramble in front of the Bobcat net, in which Brett Curley hit the ball into the back of the net. As the half continued, Col. Gray kept pressing carrying most of the play and applying most of the pressure. Bobcat keeper, Isaac Wolters made several big saves to keep his team in the game. Bluefield had a couple chances late in the half, but was denied a chance to score and the game went to overtime. In the first overtime, nothing was decided, and the teams traded a couple chances, however, Col. Gray had the best chance but was once again stopped by Wolters. Once again, Col. Gray dominated chances in the second overtime period, however, they could not beat Wolters. In penalty kicks, Wolters made 3 saves to Will Harrison’s 2 to help capture the gold medal for the Bobcats

3. GENERAL COMMENTS

I believe it was a very successful year for PEISAA Soccer. Thanks to the many people who have helped keep things organized, Allister Smith, Craig Watson, Walter MacEwan and each school’s athletic directors.

This year, we had one division for all the boy’s teams to play in. The top three were to compete in the “AA” zone playoffs to see who would be the West representatives while the bottom four teams were to compete in the “A” zone playoffs to see who would be the West representatives.

This year, we had 7 “A” girls teams in the west as SIS had joined the East to play in the AA league. The top four teams in the “A” league would play in the zone playoffs.

For Provincials, thank you to both Summerside and Stonepark for hosting the Provincial Championships this year.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

This was a good year for Intermediate soccer in the East. Our seasons ran smoothly, thanks to coaches, Athletic Directors and our referee assignor Cory Deagle.

One change this year in AA leagues was the re-addition of Birchwood to both the girls and boys divisions. This added competition was a very welcome addition and helped to create a better league that 3 teams could offer. SIS also joined the girls division, to make it an Island wide AA league. This again, provided the athletes with more teams to play and all teams seemed fairly balanced.

The A leagues were both very competitive throughout the entire season. There was an unbalanced schedule in the A boys league but that will be dealt with in the recommendations section.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS: Again the 2017 intermediate and high school field hockey had excellent weather for league play. No League games were cancelled due to weather nor lack of umpires. The fall schedule is very tight in the number of playing days available but adding an intermediate mini tournament on a Saturday , adding double header games in Cornwall from Monday through to Thursday, plus double headers in Montague on Wednesday and Tosh on Thursday helped a lot with scheduling , traveling, and umpire fees. Again this season I scheduled both intermediate and high school games (double header) at TOSH and Montague. This cut the cost of umpire travel fees in half for Summerside and Montague (only 4 trips rather than 8 trips). The mini tournament held in Cornwall is a great idea as both SIS and Montague will travel to Cornwall to play one of their town games then add their home/away home against each other…..this saves travel of SIS to Montague and Montague to SIS. The Shoot-out competition for overtime replaced the penalty stroke competition at both the junior & high school level for the 2013 season. I believe the shoot-out competition is a fairer method to determine an over- time winner to both the shooter and the goalie. An email was sent to all schools on the shoot-out competition rules. FHC had changed four rules for 2015 and these rules have improved play however the fourth rule of playing the ball in the air will not be added due to safety of players. Thank you to Cornwall, Summerside CG turf for allowing field hockey the time to use the turf. Cornwall had requested new mesh netting for the two goals at Cornwall turf (replaced in 2016 for $340) and this 2017 season the goal boards were replaced ($250) again PEIFHA bought the equipment for Cornwall.

Welcome to Birchwood Intermediate School! Although you had to borrow sticks, balls, goalie equipment, practice at UPEI turf (through PEIFHA project #2), UPEI shorts and the loss of some Mount players … your team survived with only 13 players. Birchwood won 4 vs 5th placement game to

advance to PEISAA semi-finals! PEIFHA will continue to introduce field hockey to grades 4,5, 6 ( through PEIFHA Project 1 and Project 2 ) in hope that your team and all intermediate schools will have lots of players. Thank you to all the coaches and umpires for their hard work!

4. GENERAL COMMENTS a) The 2017 AAA and A seasons ran very smoothly with very good game reporting from most schools along with website updates. There were a few games times that had to be moved due to bussing issues and a shortage of officials. Thank you to Walter MacEwen for his stats page on the PEISAA Website.

b) This year we held our A Women’s Championship at Kinkora Regional High School. Thank you to Trent Ranahan for offering his school and to Evan Killorn and Trent for a great job hosting the tournament. The A league Provincials was very competitive with 3 of 4 matches going 5 sets and the final going 4 sets. The level of A Women’s volleyball continues to increase.

c) The AAA Championships were held at Colonel Gray this year. Thank you to Laura Lindsay and her leadership team for running a first class tournament. Having the championships in the schools works very well and I propose that we run the AAA Championships in the schools again next year.

4. General Comments

The Pre Novice - Intermediate Cross Country season ended with the 2017 Source for Sports Provincial Cross Country Championship at Mill River Resort Park. The Westisle Family of Schools hosted the Pre- Novice to Intermediate Championships while the Rural High School hosted the Juvenile to Senior events.

The weather did cooperate this year with a partly sunny day but cool temperatures. A total of 661 runners ran the four different competitive courses. This was an increase of 87 runners from last year. The Juvenile /Senior Championships were held at Charlottetown Rural High School on Tuesday, October 17th. The meet manager was Esther Hovingh. A total of 136 runners ran the 2 courses in fair weather. This total did increase by 9 runners from last year.

The overall PEISAA Provincial Championship participation was 797 runners. This was an increase of 87 runners from last year’s total participation numbers.

The Mill River course is a very spectator friendly site. The last 1 km in all our races can be seen by coaches and parents. The schedule had the Bantam and Intermediate categories compete first in the morning and the Novice and Pre Novice categories competed in the afternoon. All started on time and finished on time.

The awards were presented after each race. I would like to thank Andy Doran for helping us with the presentation of awards.

Paul Daulton and our new School Sport Coordinator Phil Bridges were on hand to help with presenting the awards. Thank you to both of them.

The results were sent to the Journal the Guardian and also the West Prince Graphic from both provincials. I also sent the results Phil Bridges to post on the SAA web site.

Thank you so much to all the teachers from the Westisle Family of schools. Special thanks to Kelly Gorrill, Lincoln Rix and Esther Hovingh for their help, along with the leadership students from Hernewood Intermediate High and M E Callaghan Jr. High and Charlottetown Rural. The success of our championship is directly related to the responsible work done by these students and their teachers. Thank you so much.

At the Mill River Resort Park site we made an extra effort to make visible the Source for Sports Logo, our meet sponsor around the start and finish lines.

The Juvenile and Senior Championship was also a great success. Meet manager Esther Hovingh was very pleased with the races and the quality of the 3.5 km and 5.0 km courses. It was a great day.

The success of both competitions wouldn’t be possible without the help of so many teachers. Thank you to all the schools and coaches that make a real effort in sending us accurate registration numbers. Thanks to all the zone reps. for making sure all zone managers received the proper Provincial information. There was very little change and all zone results were clear. I would also like to say thank you to all the unit managers and volunteers for their efforts and commitment for making our SAA Provincial a great success.

Special thanks for the PEI School Milk Foundation for their continued support and for providing chocolate milk for all the competitors, Dwayne MacNeill of Source for Sports for his involvement in our cross country event, and to Parks PEI, Blair Duggan and staff for their help during this event.

Thank you also to Phil Bridges who is always there to help and support us in any way he can. Your help is very much appreciated and word of thanks goes out to Brian Allain, our official scorer, who puts in countless hours preparing the registration of all runners and taking care of the results year after year.

It is a real honor to host this event.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

The 2017-18 Senior High golf season was blessed with wonderful weather that facilitated a full slate of qualifying tournaments within the short season. Even though the weather was great and there were lots of tournaments the participating schools still had to work hard to get their players qualified. The qualifying tournament schedule was given to schools in June, but this did not seem to help the schools prepare for the fall. Qualifying tournaments were held at Avondale, Ocean View, Mill River, Eagles Glenn and Fox Meadow. Thanks to Alan McAlduff, Gordie Cox and Greg Ellis for hosting their qualifiers. Commissioners Garth Turtle and Wayne Denman provided the secretarial work needed to facilitate all the tournaments. The championship qualification format continues to effectively identify the strongest golfers and resulted in 47 men and 26 women qualifying for the championship. The championship was hosted at the Brudenell River Golf Course and the facility was again provided free of charge. The golf course staff must be thanked for the terrific work they did to help facilitate the championship, they went out of their way to make the coaches and student athletes feel welcomed. Thanks to all the coaches for the time they put into this year’s golf season as well as Phil Bridges and Craig Watson at the PEISAA office. Thanks to Blair MacPhail and the 1st year golf administration program for helping to facilitate the senior golf championship. Their involvement continues to significantly increased the PEISAA’s ability to host a great tournament for the Island`s students.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

The 2017-18 Intermediate golf season enjoyed great weather which allowed the 4 zones to complete their qualifying tournaments on schedule . Thanks must go out to Norman Beck, John Munroe, Joe Sullivan and Rob Connell for coordinating the zone tournaments. This year 94 boys from 17 schools and 38 girls from 11 schools were involved in the qualifying tournaments with 61 moving on to the Provincials hosted at the Ocean View Golf Club in Summerside. Two 9 hole qualifying tournaments were held in each of the competing Divisions. In the west tournaments were held at St Felix and Ocean View, while the east qualifiers were held Belfast Greens and Country View. The championship qualification format used this year had each of the four zones sending two teams each plus a few individuals qualifiers to the Provincial Championships. This resulted in 33 boys and a record 32 girls being involved in the championship. The championship was hosted at Ocean View Golf Club with a very reasonable green fee of $20 being charged for the boy’s 18 hole championship and $10 for the girl’s 9 hole championship. Thanks to Tony Perry and the staff at Ocean View for the terrific work they did to help facilitate the championship. Thanks to all the coaches for the time they put into this year’s golf season, they continue to try and promote the inclusion of girls in their program and the numbers are up. A record number of girls participated this year and with a little more information sent out these numbers should continue to rise. Thanks to Craig Watson and Phil Bridges for all the advice and administrative help.

General Comments/ Administratively in many ways, the 2017/18 season was a rerun of the previous year. In the third week of November the Athletic Directors meeting was held and few changes, none of them significant, were proposed for this year of play. The one point that was new and interesting was the attempt by the Ads to assist the seeding committee by providing for some flexibility in scheduling toward the end of the regular season’s schedule. Unfortunately the flexibility that was discussed never actually came into being, as the scheduling proceeded as it normally does and games were squeezed in right up to the very last available day prior to quarter-finals. When scheduling goes that way it puts pressure on everyone, players, parents, coaches, referees, assignors, Ads, principals, transportation supervisors, the seeding committee and the school sport coordinator. For the second year in a row the weather really cooperated. It seems that it will only be a matter of time until Mother Nature puts the squeeze on us and the success of our play-off schedule is jeopardized. “A” and “AA” medal games can be reassigned to schools. Some of the bigger schools have the seating capacity to host the medal match-ups at these two levels. This can relieve some of the pressure if we are pressed by weather conditions. It may be necessary in this kind of a situation to have the “A”/”AA” medal games after the “AAA” games. In addition we don’t really have a bail-out at the “AAA” level. UPEI is our site! There may have to be a contingency plan negotiated if we get snowed out. Seems that it’d be a good idea to have this worked out in advance. The officials’ numbers problem is still just that. We were close to being crippled at play-off time. This year discipline was not a problem. The Ads were 100% cooperative in dealing with the few incidents which we did have. Still these situations must be closely monitored as a mishandled problem in this area can give the SAA a ‘black eye’. There was a two week long period in which fan behavior was a focus of attention. The principal at the school in question worked hand-in-hand with his AD and the school sport coordinator and the situation was quelled. Overall the regular season went quite smoothly. The seeding committee did their job with only a few complaints all season. Play-offs proceeded without a hitch.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

This year the Intermediate east and west basketball leagues continued with the implementation of a no zone rule. This included a no zone press rule. There was still some direction needed by the two commissioners in the beginning of the year. Again this year, there were a couple of teams that had to be given the proper interpretation of help defense. After this was given, the no zone rule went very well. I RECOMMEND THAT THIS RULE MOVES TO THE OFFICIALS TO DICTATE AS IT SHOULD NOT BE A SOFT RULE.

This year we had an AA boys in west and AA east leagues for boys and girls. Every year we need to look to see if this is possible. Some years there is a need for exhibition games between the east and west and in some years there may be the need for an Island wide league. Every year comes with new challenges to make sure we do what is best for Intermediate Basketball.

The A league seems to be fine in both the east and west for numbers of teams. They have played in their own leagues since they started their leagues and this should continue. There is no need for any Island wide leagues as there is enough teams for viable leagues in the east and the west. I would recommend that Summerside Int. Girls play in the East AA league next year.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

This year the Intermediate East and West basketball leagues continued with the implementation of a no zone rule. This included a no zone press rule. I think we need to have a group look at the rules and simplify them. I am still not sure if the officials can enforce the rules during the game, but there needs to be some change to make the no zone rules work more effectively.

This year we only had one AA girls’ team in the west that wanted to go AA. Therefore, the Summerside Intermediate Girls went into the East AA girls’ league. This made for a larger than normal A girls league. MEC, Herenwood, and KISH who normally go AA went A. Athena had 2 A girls’ teams. There were two conferences made and there was a big spread in experience and competitiveness between the teams. At the end of the season the four teams that were struggling all year played a jamboree and 4 of the top 5 teams went on to A playoffs. Next year if this happens again we should split the teams into an A league and a jamboree league or B league so meaningful and competitive games can be played throughout the year.

Commissioners Comments: Another great year for our lifters in powerlifting and again no injuries. This year we had Bluefield, Montague, Colonel Gray, Charlottetown Rural, Souris, Ecole-sur-Mer and Three Oaks competing in our program. Westisle finished first in the men’s and woman’s division. The addition of the Ecole-ser-Mer lifter to our powerlifting community was a great plus for our organization. Again this year our qualifiers and provincials were well organized by all host schools and there we had good attendance from family members. We continue to see increases in the skill level of our lifters and they continue to set provincial records. None of this is possible without the support of the Island Powerlifting Union and their members who support us with judges and spotters. Please see the list below for all those who take time from their busy schedules to help out. We continue to work with schools if finding coaches and offering support so that any student who is interested in powerlifting has a place to compete. I want to welcome Johnathan Bruce from Colonel Gray as our newest powerlifting coach.

Powerlifting continues to be a wonderful sport for our students. With the experience of our judges, spotters and coaches it is also a very safe sport that encourages lifelong participation.

A reminder to all coaches that smelling salts are not to be used during competitions. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me.

We continue to work on getting results back quickly and efficiently. When you consider the amount of data involved, at our 2018 provincials there were close to 500 lifts, it has proven

difficult to get everything right. Thank you for your patience as we work through this, if you know of someone with experience with the powerlifting Wilks system who would like to help us out ask them to contact me.

4. General Comments

The 2018 school gymnastics season ended on Saturday, February 10th with the PEI School Athletic Association Provincial Gymnastics Championship at the Kensington Intermediate Senior High School. The championship was hosted by the St. Louis Elementary School.

Provincial team titles: Pre-Novice Boys- Spring Park Elementary, Pre-Novice Girls- L M Montgomery - Novice Girls- L M Montgomery Elementary, Novice Boys- Spring Park Elementary, Bantam Girls – Montague Intermediate. Individual awards were also given to the top six vault /floor routines and top ten all around.

A total of 314 gymnasts participated at this year’s event. This was an increase of 38 gymnasts from last year. The biggest increases were Novice Girls 13 and Bantam Girls 10. We had a total of 27 different schools from across PEI participate including 2 new schools, Birchwood Intermediate and East Wiltshire Intermediate. We also had one new category added, Senior Girls with only one participant.

On Saturday morning the competition started at 9:00 am and finished ahead of time. A total of 140 gymnasts participated with 90 Pre-Novice Girls and 50 Pre-Novice Boys. Increase of 10 gymnasts from last year.

On Saturday afternoon, another big crowd watched 127 gymnasts perform in the Novice boys and Novice girl’s categories, (Novice boys 38 and 89 Novice girls). Increase of 7 gymnasts from last year. This competition finished a bit later.

The late afternoon competition had a total of 47 gymnasts participate in Bantam Boys/ Girls, and Intermediate Boys/Girls and Senior categories, 7 Bantam Boys, 30 Bantam Girls, 8 Intermediate Girls and 1 Intermediate Boy and 1 Senior Girl. This was a increase of 21from last year.

For the second year in a row all 9 categories performed a Jump to Handspring onto a raised mat surface; fall to straight lying position on the back. Pre Novice 28” high and the Novice to Senior 36” Some school are having challenges getting mats to reach the 36” height at their schools. It still remains the safest vault to perform for our school athletes.

The SAA also gave out the new ribbons this year and the coaches were pleased that all athletes receiving ribbons went home with their awards. We had a few ties for medals and those should not take that long to get.

All information and results were posted in the Guardian and the Journal. The media coverage before and after was good. All results were circulated to all the media, schools and on our SAA website within days of our championship.

We had a total of 494 paid spectators. This was a increase of 79 from last year total.

Our computer program which calculated the results came through for us again. Within minutes of the end of both competitions, the results were handed out. I would like to thank Brian Alain once again for helping us with the results and registration.

I would like to say a special thank you to Phil Bridges our new SAA School Sport Coordinator for his great support leading up to the championship and all day Saturday at KISH. He stayed all day and helped our ADL Marketing Director Jamie MacPail. ADL was announced several times as our new Title Sponsor for Gymnastics at the competition site and in our news release.

I would also like to thank Principal Donald Mulligan and Phy. Ed. Teacher Brett Corcoran for all their help and continuous support. Thank you for allowing us to use your fine facility to host our Provincial Championship. It is very much appreciated.

We can’t forget PEI School milk Foundation for their continuous support and of course for the free chocolate milk for all the competitors.

Thank you to all the Unit managers for hosting their own zone competitions and sending me all the results on time. It was greatly appreciated. It’s always a pleasure to work with such dedicated professionals. Great job!

2018 PEISAA Wrestling Final Commissioner’s Report

Commissioner: Megan Morrison

1. General Comments The 2018 PEISAA Wrestling Championships were held on Friday evening for the Bantam, Intermediate and Senior divisions and on Saturday for the Novice competitors. The site was Colonel Gray High School, a change from the past several years in Montague. The tournament was run on two mats.

The on-mat official situation was strong and matches ran smoothly, without issue. The officials went out of their way to ensure the athletes were safe and interacted w/ the athletes, allowing them to feel at ease. There were no injuries that we were made aware of.

Our minor officials, score keepers, timers and hosts allowed for a very smoothly run event. Volunteers run this sport and, as commissioner and coach, I can’t thank them enough. I was very pleased with the flow of the event in our new venue this year at Colonel Gray. Adequate seating (bleachers) was key in keeping everyone off the floor and wrestling mats for both safety as well as for the fans. With one mat being housed already at Gray and one close by at Birchwood, the set up / tear down was quite easy.

Participation numbers at the intermediate and senior high stayed about the same. We lost Gulf Shore this year but had bigger teams from some schools. There continues to be a keen interest in developing a Pre-Novice division and including them at an age appropriate level of competition in PEISAA competition. Coaches did an excellent job of communicating w/ me re: athletes who would not be able to attend provincials. No-shows were kept to a minimum. When an athlete doesn’t show up, it can significantly impact the draw.

The biggest challenge continues to be developing the Intermediate / senior high school category. Having a teacher / coach w/in the school seems to determine the longevity and success of a program and helps to retain athletes. Unfortunately, when that teacher leaves the school, the program stops. The coach at Athena is very keen to further develop wrestling at his school and I look forward to further growth for next season. Wrestlers from West Prince, Summerside, Charlottetown and Montague continued on with their season and competed in the Canada East Wrestling Festival, which was held in Charlottetown. In particular, after speaking w/ wrestlers and teacher/coach from Tignish Elementary and Athena, they were very pleased w/ how the season went and have made plans for next season.

Championship titles in Novice, Bantam, Intermediate, Juvenile and Senior boys’ and girls’ categories were all up for grabs in singles, doubles and mixed play. Most of our Island schools were represented in zone playoffs, with the top two from the four zones advancing to the provincials in Novice, Bantam and Intermediate. In Juvenile, Senior and Mixed categories, there were East and West regional events to decide who went to Provincials.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

This rugby season was a very difficult one for everyone involved. The devastating loss of Brodie McCarthy, from Montague, was felt by everyone associated with the PEISAA. However, in light of his loss, the athletic community came together and supported each other in grief and mourning. This support was felt by everyone who attended the provincial championships at Bluefield and UPEI. Student-athletes from all across the Island competed in 2 divisions in men’s and women’s championships. Each year, school sport would not be possible without countless hours of work by players, coaches, referees and Athletic Directors. A special thank you goes to Phil Bridges, in his first year as School Sport Coordinator, for his help, support, and guidance behind the scenes. Also, thank you to Anthony Scott, as Referee Assignor. Credit should also be given to Darryl Boudreau for his work in hosting successful provincial A championships. Another thank you goes to the UPEI – specifically Stephanie Knickle-Currie, Leigh Read, and Chris Huggan - for allowing us to host our AAA championships at their site. Walter MacEwen is an incredible resource for our league with the work he does with the PEISAA website and the submission of scores to media outlets. The results grid on the website is a wonderful asset that he keeps up to date the entire season. There are many other people who are very important to the continued success of high school rugby on PEI and I thank them as well. Every year, the A rugby league has the same general storyline and this year was no different. The players start as athletes with little knowledge of the game and transform into players who understand what to do on the field. The smaller- sided version of the game is also important in helping the student-athletes to adjust to playing a contact sport while allowing a large amount of space for players to move in. This space allows the safety and sportsmanship aspects to be focused on due to the decreased number of collisions per game. Both A leagues came down to very competitive championships with Charlottetown Rural 2 defeating Bluefield in the women’s final and Bluefield defeating Charlottetown Rural in the men’s final. Montague men and women decided to end their season early following Brodie’s death, then Westisle men and Kensington women were unable to finish their seasons due to injuries. This meant that there were no AA championships this year. I sincerely hope that each of these programs will return next year. In the AAA regular season, both men’s and women’s divisions were very competitive and tightly matched. In the AAA championships, Three Oaks beat Bluefield in a thrilling men’s final while Three Oaks beat Westisle in a closely contested women’s final. It was just last year that I commented on how nice it was to see Westisle women’s program being competitive again, and they proved this year that they aren’t going anywhere by coming within 1 point of a championship.

GENERAL COMMENTS: The 7th Annual PEISAA Triton was held on May 21, 2018. Students and staff from fourteen schools swam, biked and ran the course at Credit Union Place (CUP), the Summerside boardwalk, Rufus St., Mackenzie Dr., Notre Dame St., and Northumberland St. The weather was excellent which made for a wonderful day on the course. Triathlon Directors, CJ Studer and Cheryl Tanton registered 61 triathletes from bantam through to senior and teachers/school staff for the event. This number is considerably lower than previous years due to a funeral for a

local student who had recently passed. Many participants and staff attended the funeral, as they should, which lowered our numbers. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and school community. Cheryl Tanton, head official, was aided by lifeguards, police, student volunteers and adult volunteers on the road. As safety is of utmost concern, trained first aid personnel were present, with key individuals always in radio communication. Pathways were swept clean and detailed course information was given at the mandatory athlete’s pre event meeting. The Summerside Police was informed of the event and assisted in securing the road sections of the triathlon. Notices were also placed in the Journal Pioneer, on the City of Summerside website and flyers were hand delivered to all residences and businesses that are on the event route. This is always done to inform residents of the event. As this is an event that celebrates the intrinsic value of sport, there were no Provincial Champions declared. However, the PEISAA graciously allowed us to award a PEISAA Excellence in Triathlon Banner for the second year to the school that had the highest percent of triathletes per school population register and complete the event. We are very thankful for the banners and are excited about continuing this practice in future events. Each triathlete also received a Triton t-shirt as they finished the course. Times were taken to give the athletes a goal for improvement next year. No times were shared among the schools or zones, thus no results were published. Each participant is a champion in their own right. The spirit of ‘play’ on the course is incredible! This model of participation is foundational in the sport of triathlon and is a model in which the race directors and parents/families feel very strongly about. The adopted model of registering and prepaying prior to the triathlon made registration on the morning of the event run smoothly. We will continue this model. The facilities at Credit Union Place and the surrounding community of Summerside worked perfectly for this event. With unwavering support from the Summerside Chief of Police and the City’s event staff-barricades and truck, use of city truck and gas for pickup and drop of of TriPEI trailer, and equipment appropriate roads were blocked off and the course was made secure for our triathletes. The Triton could not be delivered if it were not for the work of the army of volunteers from Athena, Summerside Intermediate, Three Oaks, and dedicated parents/adults and teachers. They are critical to the success of the event and provided educational opportunities and service learning hours for these students. This event is also a partnership with Triathlon PEI. This event needs their support through the use of their equipment. This event has been extensively covered by the media and has been a very positive experience for the athletes, teachers, volunteers, and spectators.

In all, the Triton triathlon has become a successful annual event due to the participating triathletes and the unwavering support of our local volunteers, PEISAA (Phil Bridges), the many partners of the PEISAA up and including the School Milk Foundation (Marilyn).

4. GENERAL COMMENTS: The 2017-18 school softball season was again effected by the weather, cold temperatures as well as lots of rain caused some postponed games. School Athletic Directors and coaches are to be commended for the proactive approach they took in rescheduling games. Luckily, Championship day was a great day for ball. Both medal games were very well played with Queen Charlotte winning the Championship. There were a total of 9 girl’s teams competing in east and west divisions. Thanks to Phil Bridges for his administrative and organizational help.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS: The 2017-18 school softball season, as has been the norm the last few years, suffered through some very inconsistent weather. With the loss of the Montague High School team, the number of games played by each team has become a concern. School Athletic Directors and coach are to be commended for the proactive approach they took in completing as many games as possible.. The Provincial Women`s Championships, held at Slemon Park, saw the Col Gray girls also repeated with a convincing win over Three Oaks. There were 7 women’s teams competing in east and west divisions. Cross over quarter finals helped to insure that the best teams went to the finals in Slemon Park. Thanks to Phil Bridges for his administrative and organizational help.

Further thank you to Mike Richards, the officials assignor.

4. GENERAL COMMENTS

This year the East and West flag football leagues continued with an A/AA league in both boys and girls. We had 20 schools take part in the league this year. 10 in the East and 10 in the West. Games continued to be played on Tuesday/Wednesday in the West and Monday to Thursday (one Friday) in the East. The East did use two fields at Francois Buote this year to help with scheduling. The flexibility was needed as there seems to be many more obstacles in making a schedule each year. There are very few extra time slots in the East and in the West once the schedules are made. We also sometimes struggle with getting enough qualified referee’s for every game.
