PRESIDENTS REPORT

The final game of the home and away season is upon us and it is hard to believe that the season has come and gone already. We still have a number of teams in finals so all the best to the U/17 and U/14 teams. The U/12 Black team has a must win game this weekend to qualify for the finals. We certainly wish Adam and his team all the best as they prepare for this final game.

I would sincerely like to thank all the coaches and team managers in particular for their hard work over the year. Being a volunteer in the community is certainly appreciated by everyone in this club. I would also like to thank the families in our club who have embraced the Friday night get together. Our last one is this Friday with prizes and pizzas for all. Please make an effort to come on down for this event.

It has been a busy season and our committee will shortly send out a letter outlining future events. There is still much to be done with finals, presentation nights, trophies and appointing coaches for the new season. If you are able to help please let us know.

Please support the teams in finals and get down to watch the young Rams in action! See you all Friday night!!

Have a great week everyone - GO RAMS!!

EBFC BEST PLAYERS ON THE DAY WHOLE TEAM COACHES COMMENTS At training on Friday night, the focus was on marking under pressure and contesting the loose , ball. The boys enjoyed working on these skills and couldn’t wait to put these skills to good use dur- ing Sunday’s game. Game day Sunday started with a really good warm up. Lots of handballs, kicking, bumps, spins and picking up the ball drills. The boys started the game much better than last week and never looked back. While there was an improvement in their marking and contested ball, it was without doubt the run and carry and handball game against the wind in the 2nd and 4th quarters that absolutely blew the coaches and parents away. The wind was at its strongest in the last quarter and the boys managed to outscore FTG by 3 goals to 2. We welcome back our head coach Mark next week and look forward to a massive effort by the un- der 8’s in the last game of the season.

Not too sure what we have done to upset the people organising the Super Sunday draw but we were the only team not to play at home. Never mind, we headed to Montrose which turned out to be a great game with all players putting in a huge effort. The most challenging thing being an U”9 s coach is making sure everyone is getting a go near the action, getting a kick and having fun. On Sunday the aim was to share the ball and make sure everyone was involved. On many occasions we handballed to kids running past and kicked to space which was brilliant to watch. Big Max was dominant up forward kicking another 3 goals this week. Angus McLaren has really found confidence in the past few weeks dashing up and down the wing. He has great skills and vision to find teammates in better positions. It was great to have Joshy Smith back this week after his trip up North. It’s clear he missed playing as it didn’t take long to get back in the action. Smothering and competing is great to watch and he made the most of some open space on the wing with some great kicks from Tommy Lane into space which opened up the game. It’s really unbelievable how Tommy can concentrate on getting a kick whilst keeping track of each teams score with such accuracy. In the second half it was time for the girls to take charge in the middle with Hayley in the ruck and Lyla and Caitlin her rovers. It was so pleasing to see the girls have so much fun and playing such a competitive brand of footy. Unfortunately there is only one week to go so Friday night it is important that all the parents come upstairs for Pizza and a chat before our last game at home on Sunday.

COACHES COMMENTS Who says players don’t step up for milestone games??? We had 4 of our boys celebrate their 50th games on Sunday and the whole team lifted for the occasion!! Played the 2nd top team, a big crowd, Super Sunday, a strong wind blowing to one end! We were kicking against it in the 1st quarter and defended strongly, tackled hard and attacked the ball with purpose – keeping them scoreless for the quarter. With the wind behind us – the message was to kick long, and defend in front. We did both and our efforts resulted in the 1st goal of the game, and put us in front at half time. We battled hard in the 3rd quarter, trying to defend the lead but allowed them to get an easy goal, but we had the wind I the last and the boys were pumped. We scored pretty early in the last quarter to give us the lead – and again with some solid defensive work and long kicking out of defence kept them to just 2 behinds. We had the momentum and the boys we playing with a great sense of confidence. We managed to slot through another one late in the quarter – THE SEALER!!! – The crowd went crazy – as did the coaches!!! A GREAT WIN BY BOYS!!! SUPER EFFORT BY ALL!!

As a new member of the Rams this year – Clay has been a key member of the under 11s team. He plays his role week in, week out, spending mosot of his time at half-forward, half-back and along the wing. He reads the game well, and has tak- en many big marks – both in defense and also up forward. He has a sweeping right foot – and more often than not, hits a target. He’s not afraid to put a big on, or a shepherd on a bigger opponent. Congratulations on your 50th Game Clay!!

COACH’S COMMENTS

Due to his size – Josh spends most of his time on the ruck – and he is doing a great job in that role – getting many hitouts and giving our in-ballers the 1st use of the ball. He is instrumental in ‘setting up the wall’ when the ball is in our forward line, and provides our forwards more scoring opportunities with multiple forward 50 entries on the rebound. Josh is often heard yelling at his teammates to ‘set the wall’ – showing great leadership qualities. Coops love the contested ball – putting on big crunching tackles, and well timed shepherds and bumps. Josh’s development over the last 2 seasons has been great to be a part of. His hard work at training is really paying off. Congratulations on your 50th Game Coops!!

COACH’S COMMENTS

One of the key position players in the under 11s, Paddy always performs the job he is asked. He is dangerous around goal, using one of his big assets - a great long, accurate kick. With his size, Paddy is often a go-to target at Center-Half Forward and Full Forward and at times, stopping opposition forward movements at Center-Half Back. He reads the ball well, and can put on a big tackle when to opportunity comes up. Congratulations on your 50th Game Paddy!!

COACH’S COMMENTS

Despite being one of the smaller sized boys on the team, Bailey is always getting in and under packs and more often than not, he’s the last one to get up from a stoppage. He is a brave and at times, fearless footballer – especially when he takes on opposition players that are – most of the time – bigger than he is! Bailey racks up possessions each week, reading the play well and when he has it, he looks for a good option and disposes of the ball with skill. Congratulations on your 50th Game Basil!!

COACHES COMMENTS

Sunday’s game saw us up against a very strong FTG Eagles side sitting 3rd on the ladder. In very windy conditions on the North oval we won the toss and kicked with the aid of a strong breeze in the first quarter. We were switched on from the start and were first to the ball and harassed and pressured our highly rated opponents when they had the ball. Subsequently we were awarded with free kicks and the ball spent a lot of time in our forward line. However we were not able to use the wind to the best advantage. Our kicks were not high and deep enough and FTG were able to cut off many of our forward entries. But we worked very hard in this quarter and were able to score a goal and take a 7 point lead into quarter time.

Unfortunately from this point our opponents kicked into gear and in the second quarter were able to take full advantage of the scoring end. They played very smart football by kicking the ball high and deep into the forward line and letting the wind do the work for them. At the same time our pressure dropped away and we were led to the ball. We went to the half time break just over 4 goals behind.

The trend continued for the rest of the game and although our kids tried hard we just couldn’t get back into the game against a very strong opponent. There is no doubt the effort was there but at the end of the day we were not able to match FTG after quarter time. We struggled to handle the ball cleanly in the difficult conditions whereas our opponents rarely fumbled and that proved to be a key difference in the game. They were also able to kick some easy goals as our pressure dropped away in the last quarter.

We now look forward to our last game of the season against Eastern Lions. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to finish the season on a real positive note with a win against a team in a similar position to us. If we can handle the ball more cleanly (we will be doing a lot of work on this at training) and get our pressure levels back to what they previously were there is no doubt we will get a good result in this game.

Congratulations to Brayden on his 50th game.

COACH’S COMMENTS Brayden is a skilled player who is having a really good season in 2017. Whilst he certainly enjoys playing on the forward line and snagging a goal or two he is very versatile in that he can also play as a running defender and gives us strong defence and great drive off the half back line. He is great to coach as he has a good footy brain and is capable of blocking and shep- herding when required, as well tackling. He also understands the importance of what is best for the team. As such he is al- ways willing to listen to his coaches and to play in a position which will bring greater benefit for the team.

Congratulations Brayden on your 50 game milestone and your season as well.

COACHES COMMENTS.: Fair to say that Sunday was not our best day. The first three quarters were good, particularly the second quarter where we held Vermont to one goal when they had the wind. The last quarter the flood gates opened and they kicked 7 goals in quick time. Not a good end to the day but some sterling performances particularly from the girls in the backline. Thank you to Emma Worner who filled in at very short notice.

We have two matches left for the season and we have a great chance to finish the season with a real positive. Thanks to all the girls who have worked so hard on the training track it is clear to see that all your work is paying off on game day.
