BBC Four biopics: Lessons in Trashy Respectability The broadcast of Burton and Taylor in July 2013 marked the end of a decade- long cycle of feature-length biographical dramas transmitted on BBC Four, the niche arts and culture digital channel of the public service broadcaster. The subjects treated in these biopics were various: political figures, famous cooks, authors of popular literature, comedians and singers. The dramas focused largely on the unhappy or complex personal lives of well-loved figures of British popular culture. From the lens of the 21st century, these dramas offered an opportunity for audiences to reflect on the culture and society of the 20th century, changing television’s famous function of ‘witness’ to one of ‘having witnessed’ and/or ‘remembering’ (Ellis, 2000). The programmes function as nostalgia pieces, revisiting personalities familiar to the anticipated older audience of BBC Four, working in concert with much of the archive and factual content on the digital broadcaster’s schedules. However, by revealing apparent ‘truths’ that reconfigure the public images of the figures they narrate, these programmes also undermine nostalgic impulses, presenting conflicting interpretations of the recent past. They might equally be seen as impudent incursions onto the memory of the public figures, unnecessarily exposing the real-life subjects to censure, ridicule or ex post facto critical judgement. Made thriftily on small budgets, the films were modest and spare in visual style but were generally well received critically, usually thanks to writerly screenplays and strong central performances. The dramas became an irregular but important staple of the BBC Four schedule, furnishing the channel with some of their highest ratings in a history chequered by low audience numbers. -

The O2 Arena
THE O2 ARENA By Habel Moyà and Teo Duran DESCRIPTION The O2 Arena (temporarily the sponsor neutral "North Greenwich Arena", during the 2012 Summer Olympics and 2012 Summer Paralympics), is a multi purpose indoor arena located in the centre of The O2 entertainment complex on the Greenwich Peninsula in south east London. The arena was built under the former Millennium Dome, a large dome shaped building built to house an exhibition celebrating the turn of the third millennium; as the dome shaped structure still stands over the arena, The Dome remains a name in common usage for the venue. The arena, as well as the total O2 complex, is named after its primary sponsor, the telecommunications company O2. The O2 Arena has the second highest seating capacity of any indoor venue in the United Kingdom, behind the Manchester Arena, but took the crown of the world's busiest music arena from New York City's Madison Square Garden in 2008. The closest underground station to the venue is the North Greenwich station on the Jubilee line. HISTORY Following the closure of the Millennium Experience at the end of 2000, the Millennium Dome was leased to Meridian Delta Ltd. in December 2001, for redevelopment as an entertainment complex. This included plans for an indoor arena. Construction of the arena started in 2003, and finished in 2007. After the interior of the dome had been largely cleared and before building work inside began, in December 2004, the dome was used as the main venue for the annual Crisis Open Christmas organised by the London based homelessness charity Crisis. -

BRITISH POLITICAL LEADERSHIP FROM CHURCHILL TO BLAIR: In Churchill's Footsteps: How Blair Bombed Out MICHAEL DOBBS There is an old-fashioned view that a debate should attempt to have a beginning, a middle, and an end-and preferably in that order. I find that view both appealing and relevant since I have a strong suspicion that, no matter how hard we try to avoid it, the final resting place of our discussion today is preor- dained. That place is Iraq. But before we disappear into the mists and mirages of the deserts around Baghdad, let us begin by bending our knee to the formal sub- ject of this debate, which is the quality of leadership. First, we need a definition. What is political leadership? It's not the same as simply being a leader, a matter of occupying office. Ten men and one woman have sat in that famous chair before the fireplace in 10 Downing Street since the time of Churchill, yet today the majority of them lie buried in unmarked graves. Their greatest political success often is their arrival at Downing Street; most of them have left with heads low and sometimes in tears, their reputations either greatly diminished or in tatters. Furthermore, the quality of leadership should not be confused with the ability to win elections or to cling to office. Harold Wilson won three elections during this period, but was not great, while John Major sur- vived for seven years, leaving most people to wonder how. So let me offer a starting point for the discussion by suggesting that polit- ical leadership is about change and movement. -

Blair's premiership is noted for the way he managed, or had to manage, his public display of religious faith and its associated values which he sought to apply to particular policies as a prime source for his social conscience and political conviction. The paper addresses how he, based on a particular view of Christianity, has shaped his political agenda regarding the 'modernisation' of his party and the country, 'equalities' legislation on women's and gay rights, 'ethical' wars in Kosovo and Iraq and a fight against international, and religious, terrorism. Section II first explores young Blair's double reception of social(ist) Christianity and left-wing politics informed by the key concept of 'community', and then his early career as an MP and Labour leader who came to be known as a 'new moralist' politician. Sections III and IV look at New Labour policies on education, social and moral issues and defence and foreign affairs through the perspective of religion, i.e. their effects upon religion and his relationship with churches and religious communities across Britain. After indicating Blair's post-prime ministerial activities under his 'Faith Foundation' and remarks upon religion, section V considers problems surrounding the contemporary role of religion in the face of the global rise of both religious extremism and aggressive secularism. -
