  • Dundee's Young People Take Centre Stage in Anti-Prejudice Exhibition Launch Event
Dundee's young people take centre stage in anti-prejudice exhibition launch event A thought-provoking exhibition which explores the life and modern legacy of Anne Frank launches today (7 June) at *Dundee Central Library to help mark the 10th anniversary of the charity behind it. Anne Frank + You, presented by anti-prejudice education charity Anne Frank Scotland, in partnership with Dundee City Council, draws on elements from Anne's life and diary that have a strong contemporary resonance. The result is a thought-provoking, stimulating and reflective experience for visitors – one which examines themes including the nature of prejudice, and the value of freedom and education. The launch event has been organised - with support from Anne Frank Scotland's staff - by a steering group of teenaged Anne Frank Ambassadors: young people who through their engagement with the charity's educational programmes have been inspired and empowered to challenge all forms of prejudice and discrimination, and have gone on to become vocal proponents of Anne Frank's message of social justice and equality in their schools and local communities. Several of them will take centre stage at the event, delivering speeches, presentations and songs. In the last decade Anne Frank Scotland has created over 400 such Ambassadors from the tens of thousands of young people it has worked with. Speakers at the launch event – which takes place days before what would have been Anne Frank's 89th birthday (12 June) – include: • Anne Frank Ambassadors from Dundee secondary schools*: the young people will deliver presentations on Anne Frank, and issues facing young people today.

  • December 2018
December 2018 From the Rector Dear Parents/Carers, As we reach the end of another calendar year, it is good to review what has been achieved so far in this school session 208-19. I am immensely proud of all the achievements of our young people and this newsletter aims to highlight as many as possible. My sincere apologies to any pupil who has been missed out. At Grove Academy, we aim to give our young people a wide range of opportunities to enhance their school experience – opportunities which will help them along on their chosen learning pathway towards a successful and positive destination after leaving school. From my 5 a Day chats with pupils, I realise they value these opportunities greatly! This year has been no exception – with trips to Washington DC and New York, Berlin, Summerlee, the WW1 Battlefields, the Queensferry crossing, Dundee and Abertay Universities and the Scottish Parliament, as well as the Advanced Engineering Group’s visit to Seattle in Washington State, USA, where they won the “No guts, No Glory Award”. Please enjoy reading this newsletter and share the achievements of our excellent and ambitious young people. Since the start of the Session in August we have said goodbye to Mr Gourlay (Maths), Mrs Stirling (English) and Mrs Lauder who has gone on Maternity Leave after the birth of her son. We have welcomed back Mrs Cassidy (HE) and Mrs Lees (Business) from their Maternity leaves, and also welcomed our three new Probationary teachers, Miss MacLaren (CDT), Mr Boyd (Physics), Mr Honeyman (Chemistry) and recently Mrs Neilsen in Modern Studies.

  • Dundee Civic Trust
DUNDEE CIVIC TRUST REPRESENTATIONS REGARDING THE UNSATISFACTORY NATURE OF THE LOCAL AUTHORITY BOUNDARY FOR THE CITY OF DUNDEE Preamble Dundee Civic Trust thanks you for your letter inviting it to justify its view that the current boundaries of the City of Dundee are harmful to the “effective and convenient management of the City”, and do not allow – or indeed oblige, all those whose principal interests are met by the City to take a democratic say in its operation and development, or contribute appropriately to its finances. Your letter asks us to make our case, and that can only be done properly by demonstrating a comprehensive set of deficiencies that would justify such a major change. Thus this submission is necessarily lengthy, which we feel is unavoidable if our view is to be given substance. Background Prior to 1975, Dundee’s local authority was an all-purpose “Corporation” with a tight boundary around its built up area, - in many ways identical to the present City boundary. Historically Dundee expanded into the old Angus County through a succession of minimal land concessions to the Royal Burgh which comprised very dense Victorian development to allow very large numbers of textile workers with no means of transport to live within a short travelling distance of the mills in which they were employed. Thus the historical boundary was always very tight. However as the economy changed in the post WW2 period, increasing numbers within the City became car owners and gained the ability to buy their own homes. Car commuting became popular and development expanded rapidly beyond the old Corporation boundary.
