Red Rock Canyon

National Conservation Area

When it comes to location Summerlin will always be the number one Las Vegas master- planned community. Why? Just take a look at its backyard. Climbers, hikers, cyclists, photographers and naturalists from all over the world make regular pilgrimages to southern 's most breathtaking natural treasure - Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. These 195,819 acres of protected, pristine land feature a 13-mile scenic drive, more than 30 miles of hiking trails, rock climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking, road biking, picnic areas, nature observing and a visitor center with exhibit rooms and book store. And being just minutes from their front doors, residents of Summerlin make visits to this awe-inspiring place every day.

Mount Charleston Resort

Close to Las Vegas, But a World Away

Only 30 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, but a world away in atmosphere, the Resort on

Mount Charleston is a rustic and relaxing pet friendly hotel retreat high in the mountains of the

Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Here in our majestic mountain surroundings, the air is crisp, the average temperature is 20 degrees cooler than Las Vegas all year round, and we’re surrounded by breathtaking views and outdoor activities for every season.

With so much to do in the area, hiking, biking, and picnicking in the

National Recreation Area, skiing, snowboarding and other snow sports at Las Vegas Ski Resort, day trips

to Hoover Dam or the Las Vegas Strip, you’re sure to take home quite a few pictures of your own. Las Vegas Strip

City Center

Most of the attractions and shows on the Strip are located on the hotel casino properties.

Some of the more popular free attractions visible from the Strip include the water fountains at Bellagio, the Sirens of TI show at Treasure Island - TI, the volcano at The Mirage, and the Fall of Atlantis and

Festival Fountain at Caesars Palace. MGM Grand features a glass-sided lion habitat inside the casino area, in which up to six lions are shown every day.

You think you're big time? Prove it. Anyone over a certain height can ride a roller coaster. But it takes a real man (or woman) to swim with the sharks in the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay. There are no cages – just you, 1.3 million gallons of underwater real estate, and more than 30 sharks, including sand tiger, sandbar and white tip reef sharks.

So, you can swim with the fishes. Can you fly like an eagle? The new Fremont Street Flightlinez wants to know. They're hooking people up to harnesses and sending them down a zip line that cruises right over the crowds on Fremont Street and under the giant video canopy. For some zip lining with a little less neon, head out to Boulder City for Bootleg Canyon Flightlines.

Hoover Dam

Lake Mead

Construction began in 1931 and Hoover Dam was completed in 1936. It still stands tall as an

engineering marvel high above the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada. Hoover Dam attracts

over 7 million visitors from around the new world every year feeding vast tourism into the Las Vegas

Nevada and Arizona economy.

A scenic by-product of Hoover Dam is the

gigantic reservoir of Lake Mead, a stunningly

beautiful water recreation wonderland. This boating, sailing, fishing and house-boating paradise attracts over 10 million visitors a year. Lake Mead covers 550 miles of majestic shoreline and 247 square miles of area which is twice the size of Rhode Island. Its capacity of 1 1/4 trillion cubic feet of water would cover the entire state of Pennsylvania one foot deep. Valley of Fire

State Park

Valley of Fire State park gets its name from the red sandstone that forms its most popular sights. This is a popular place with photographers and families out for the day. It's also an excellent place to head when you're tired of the Las Vegas casinos, people and noise.

The most popular stop, and the most interesting one, is Mouse's Tank, where a short walk takes you between sandstone cliffs covered with ancient petroglyphs and ends at a natural basin in the rock.

The Valley of Fire State Park Visitor Center includes some excellent, easy-to-understand exhibits about how the red rocks got there, a short film about the park and an exhibit about humans in the Valley of Fire. They also have a few native snakes on display.

Lost City Museum

The was built by the National Park Service to exhibit artifacts that were being

excavated from Pueblo Grande de Nevada. These Anasazi Indian sites were being threatened by the waters of Lake Mead as it backed up behind the newly built Hoover Dam. Eventually, when the lake was filled to capacity, about five miles of sites had been inundated or undercut by the water.

The Civilian Conservation Corps assisted in the excavation of the sites and the construction of the museum building. The building was constructed of sun-dried adobe brick in a pueblo- revival style. The museum also served as the park headquarters for the Boulder Dam State Park that was established at

Lake Mead.

The museum is currently owned and maintained by the State of Nevada as one of its six state museums. Program include ongoing archaeological research on the remaining Lost City sites, school tours and outreach programs, changing exhibits and archival library and collections research capabilities.
