Mount Shasta Annotated Bibliography Chapter 18
Mount Shasta Annotated Bibliography Chapter 18 Legends: Other This section contains a number of unrelated entries, including material about the oft-mentioned bell legends, the little people legends, and UFO legends. Some miscellaneous entries, arguably termed legends, include an entry about two Alaskan mountains named for Mt. Shasta, and an entry for the 1930s' slang phrase "From Mt. Shasta." Some of the materials exhibit a rare originality, especially Caroling's comic-book styled Mount Shasta and the Galaxy People. This section also includes a number of miscellaneous entries which in one way or another convey the mystic and spiritual expectations of some visitors to Mt. Shasta. The [MS number] indicates the Mount Shasta Special Collection accession numbers used by the College of the Siskiyous Library. [MS2156]. Avenell, Bruce K. Mount Shasta: The Vital Essence, A Spiritual Explorers Guide. Escondido: Eureka Society, 1999. 154 pp. Subtitle: To the Natural and Man-Made Consciousness-Enhancing Structures on Mt. Shasta The author recounts spiritual lessons and experiences from several decades of travel to Mount Shasta. Sand Flat, Grey Butte, Panther Meadows, etc, are described as special places. The author has a spiritual communication with a spiritual being named Duja, on Mt. Shasta and elsewhere. The book begins: 'A small group of very dedicated people, The Eureka Society has been coming to Mt. Shasta, California, for thirty years. They come to communicate with a spiritual being with whom many of them have had spiritual experiences while camping, hiking, and meditating on the mountain.' (p. ix). 'Although Duja, or any of the spirit beings on the mountain for that matter, may appear to be standing still she must have complete control of attitude, conscious focus, mental velocity and be monitoring the expenditure of energy necessary for you to see her. -

Urban Myths Mythical Cryptids
Ziptales Advanced Library Worksheet 2 Urban Myths Mythical Cryptids ‘What is a myth? It is a story that pretends to be real, but is in fact unbelievable. Like many urban myths it has been passed around (usually by word of mouth), acquiring variations and embellishments as it goes. It is a close cousin of the tall tale. There are mythical stories about almost any aspect of life’. What do we get when urban myths meet the animal kingdom? We find a branch of pseudoscience called cryptozoology. Cryptozoology refers to the study of and search for creatures whose existence has not been proven. These creatures (or crytpids as they are known) appear in myths and legends or alleged sightings. Some examples include: sea serpents, phantom cats, unicorns, bunyips, giant anacondas, yowies and thunderbirds. Some have even been given actual names you may have heard of – do Yeti, Owlman, Mothman, Cyclops, Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster sound familiar? Task 1: Choose one of the cryptids from the list above (or perhaps one that you may already know of) and write an informative text identifying the following aspects of this mythical creature: ◊ Description ◊ Features ◊ Location ◊ First Sighting ◊ Subsequent Sightings ◊ Interesting Facts (e.g. how is it used in popular culture? Has it been featured in written or visual texts?) Task 2: Cryptozoologists claim there have been cases where species now accepted by the scientific community were initially considered urban myths. Can you locate any examples of creatures whose existence has now been proven but formerly thought to be cryptids? Extension Activities: • Cryptozoology is called a ‘pseudoscience’ because it relies solely on anecdotes and reported sightings rather than actual evidence. -

Thesis Title Page
I’LL BELIEVE IN ANYTHING by Evan J. Hume BFA, Photography & Film, May 2009, Virginia Commonwealth University A Thesis submitted to The Faculty of Columbian College of Arts and Sciences of The George Washington University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts May 15, 2011 Thesis directed by Dean Kessmann Associate Professor of Photography Siobhan Rigg Assistant Professor of New Media Abstract I’ll Believe in Anything This thesis is an extended artist statement that focuses on a body of work created within the Master of Fine Arts program at The George Washington University. My recent photographs are appropriated from U.S. government documents regarding UFOs from the mid-twentieth century, the only time in American history that the government officially studied the phenomenon. I specifically use photographs that have been degraded by mechanical reproduction and are now no longer recognizable as documentary photographs. Because of their abstract quality, I discuss the photographs in terms of visual languages that were prevalent at the time of their creation, particularly Abstract Expressionism, as well as recent developments in the discourse surrounding non- representational contemporary photography. The archival images I have selected have been slightly manipulated, emphasizing and exaggerating the visual association I have created so as to suggest a history in which American abstract art and the UFO phenomenon are figuratively intertwined. ii Table of Contents Abstract ii Table of Contents iii -

Holism in Deep Ecology and Gaia-Theory: a Contribution to Eco-Geological
M. Katičić Holism in Deep Ecology and Gaia-Theory: A Contribution to Eco-Geological... ISSN 1848-0071 UDC 171+179.3=111 Recieved: 2013-02-25 Accepted: 2013-03-25 Original scientific paper HOLISM IN DEEP ECOLOGY AND GAIA-THEORY: A CONTRIBUTION TO ECO-GEOLOGICAL SCIENCE, A PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE OR A NEW AGE STREAM? MARINA KATINIĆ Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, Croatia e-mail: [email protected] In the second half of 20th century three approaches to phenomenon of life and environmental crisis relying to a holistic method arose: ecosophy that gave impetus to the deep ecology movement, Gaia-hypothesis that evolved into an acceptable scientific theory and gaianism as one of the New Age spiritual streams. All of this approaches have had different methodologies, but came to analogous conclusions on relation man-ecosystem. The goal of the paper is to introduce the three approaches' theoretical and practical outcomes, compare them and evaluate their potency to stranghten responsibility of man towards Earth ecosystem which is a self-regulating whole which humanity is part of. Key words: holism, ecosophy, deep ecology movement, gaia-theory, new age, responsibility. Holizam u dubinskoj ekologiji i teoriji Geje: doprinos ekogeološkoj znanosti, filozofija života ili struja New agea? -
Destined for Shamanic Inspiration. an Integrative Study of Buryat (Neo)Shamans
109 Destined for Shamanic Inspiration. An Integrative Study of Buryat (Neo)Shamans Valentina Kharitonova and Yulia Ukraintseva Introduction Altered states of consciousness (ASCs) experienced from time to time by people of creative professions, adepts of different religious and magical- mystical cults, people taking hallucinogenic, narcotic, alcoholic drugs, and individuals with mental issues or diseases, attract more and more interest of researchers in various scientific areas. In this respect the research field of ethnology and folklore studies allows to study (in collaboration with neurophysiologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, etc.) adepts of various religious and magical-mystical practices (including shamanism), performers of epic songs, storytellers - to number several of them. At present this field includes, first of all, neo-shamans1, folk healers and adepts of some neo religious movements (Kharitonova et al. 2008). All of them quite knowingly resort to ASCs, many of them do this not out of mere curiosity, but feeling a need to experience these states. Among above mentioned practitioners there are people who fall hostage to ASCs, because, on the one hand, their organisms can not function normally 1 In the context o f Russia the term neo-shaman is used in relation to representatives of those peoples who have had well-developed shamanism until quite recently. These people, as a rule, resorted to the shamanic practice of their ethnic tradition indirectly in the context of “rebirth of shamanism” by attending courses of healing, magic, bioenergotherapy, or learning from any of the “new shamans”. The term urban shaman is used to refer to representatives of non-shamanic ethnic groups practicing in big Russian cities (for details see: Kharitonova 2006). -
