I have never read the original The Cazalets: The Epic Full-Cast BBC Radio Dramatisation book saga by Elizabeth Jane Howard and, obviously, a drama version of the entire storyline will cut corners but I am unable to compare the two without reading the books which I now intend to do as I enjoyed this so much. The radio plays taken from the novels were broadcast between and on Radio 4 and it is wonderful to have the entire series collected in one package. I do enjoy audio books, especially when I am driving which I do a lot and I particularly enjoy audio plays — rather than books just narrated by one person — so this was a particular treat for me. Immediately, we are thrown into their marriages, affairs, their children and the various interplay between the characters. These range from matriarch Duchy through to Zoe, the young new wife of son Rupert, and disgruntled stepmother to young Neville and the deeply unhappy Clary. Home Place The Cazalets: The Epic Full-Cast BBC Radio Dramatisation Sussex in sees the shadow of WWI still falling over the characters, but we are aware of more storm clouds coming as the Second World War approaches. As the saga continues, the storyline switches from one generation to the next, almost seamlessly, as the The Cazalets: The Epic Full-Cast BBC Radio Dramatisation grow and have lives of their own. The fifth book in The Cazalets: The Epic Full-Cast BBC Radio Dramatisation saga sees the family again converge at the family home and brings the saga full circle. This is a satisfying and often moving drama, well acted and an excellent driving companion. When I saw that the BBC had produced an audio dramatization of the series, I thought it would be an entertaining listen. The book starts out as a straightforward potboiler-y WW2-era family drama of the sort you might expect to see on Masterpiece Theater, but then the crazy jumps up on the stage. She fears that her mother, Villy, who has never shown her normal maternal warmth, will not support her if she tells her about her father. So this happens a couple of times before Louise fights him off and screams at him that she hates him. She tells Villy about going off on vacation with her father and his new wife, callously ignoring how that would make Villy feel. There are actually unintended pregnancies all over the place, by the way, thankfully not all by Edward. Louisa marries young, to Michael, an upper-class artist quite a bit older who shortly after the wedding has to join the armed forces. Michael is creepily close to his mother, who is overbearing to Louisa. Jul 17, Hermien rated it The Cazalets: The Epic Full-Cast BBC Radio Dramatisation was amazing Shelves: audiobooksseries. I was a delight to spend more time with the Cazalet family and a good refresher to now read the fifth book The Cazalets: The Epic Full-Cast BBC Radio Dramatisation the series. This audio "play" is very well done. Aug 26, April rated it it was amazing Shelves: books-offavorites. This is probably one of my favorite audio series of all time. I love the original book series for its humanity and depth of characters. The BBC dramatic cast brought all the characters to life. If there was anything I didn't like it was the fact that it just felt too real. Relationship ends don't get neatly tied up. Characters are not fully resolved. But that is the beauty of the series as well as the audio dramatization. The Cazalets feel like a real family and no real family has a convenient a This is probably one of my favorite audio series of all time. The Cazalets feel like a real family and no real family has a convenient and poetic end. NOTE: Many of the relationships are highly complex and on the mature side. There are several affairs between characters, a same sex relationship between two women, and one male character in particular who is in multiple affairs and also one of the most troubling scenes where he molests The Cazalets: The Epic Full-Cast BBC Radio Dramatisation teenage daughter. All of these emotional and sometimes disturbing relationships are handled both in the books and in the audio with admirable empathy and understanding. It doesn't gloss over consequences or problems. It opens a window into the mental processes of each character, revealing why they do what they do. The entire series is a great example of empathy and I recommend with that strong caveat. Dec 10, Elisa rated it liked it. Enjoyable, tho I kept wondering what I was missing in listening to the condensed dramatized version. Also kept wishing I had world enough and time to read this in tandem with Woolf's The Years. Mar 23, Lisa rated it it was amazing Shelves: fictionaudio-drama. Mini- series adapted from a series of novels that's set at the estate of a large privileged Sussex family and follows their life in London between the years and This TV family saga is based upon four of the largely autobiographical series of five novels by Elizabeth Jane Howard known jointly as The Cazalet Chronicles, although the fifth and final volume, All Change, was not published until and hence is not portrayed in the TV series. The young girl named Clary who wants to be a writer is modelled upon Howard herself. This series was produced by the late Verity Lambert through her company Cinema The Cazalets: The Epic Full-Cast BBC Radio Dramatisation, with the actress Joanna Lumley as co-producer. Lumley would doubtless have kept a sharp eye on period detail, and correct enunciation and mannerisms. The only thing wrong with this series is the absolutely terrible lighting. Sometimes a dark room comes across almost as a beach scene in the South of France. The lighting man should have been sent to the Gulag and never released. Much of the film was shot on location in and around a large rambling house. In the story, it is meant to be in Sussex, and with all that roof and gable thatch it must have been in one of the many Hursts which bespeckle the countryside of that sunny shire. The casting of this series was done very carefully, and everyone is spot-on. An intense and marvellous performance by graces the series, but then when did a Lesley Manville performance not stand out? My favourite performance in this series, however, was the touching portrayal of the governess Miss Millament by Patsy Rowlands. This was the last production in which she appeared before her death. What a wonderful actress she was. In this part, she brought such pathos and feeling to a supporting role, especially when she said with tears in her eyes: 'What will become of me? It is very sad to think of it. The series is greatly enlivened by the performances of the three young girls by the charming, talented and I should say inspired trio of actresses Florence Hoath as ClaryEmma Griffiths Malin as Louiseand Claudia Renton as Polly, whose father is always sleazily groping her. The three of them really seem to have lived the story while they were filming, and when they are on screen it is like eavesdropping to watch them. Stephen Dillane is perfectly brilliant as the odious lech to whom Lesley Manville is unfortunately married, and with whom Anna Chancellor at her most mistressy clings in countless illicit encounters. as Hugh is sturdy and upright, Joanna Page is stunningly talented as showing distinct character change and development through the story, from a foolish and giddy young egocentric to thoughtful The Cazalets: The Epic Full-Cast BBC Radio Dramatisation, and Paul Rhys is magnificent as the sensitive, soulful father of Clary, Rupert Cazalet, who disappears during the War. There are too many fine performances to list, and they are all excellent. The story itself is captivating, a wholly successful saga of the intertwining lives of this family, who share the huge house and live out their separate but interrelated personal dramas under the same thatch. It is one of those series one does not want to end. Well done, all!
