Maican – The Leaf Beetle fauna of the Rodna Mountains (123 ~ 140) INTRODUCTION The first information concerning the coleopterans from the Rodna Mountains, situated in the northern part of the Romanian Eastern Carpathians, were published in the second half of the XIX th century by Frivaldszky (1871) and Bielz (1887). A number of beetle species recorded from this area are found in the catalogues of Petri (1912, 1925). The Csiki’s paper (1951) presents a list with 1343 taxa (collected by the author, together with previous records for this area) from 56 families, including the Chrysomelidae family. Most of the chrysomelid species mentioned here were found on the southern mountainous slopes, on the tributaries of the Some şul Mare River: B ăilor Valley, M ăriilor Valley, valley of Ro şu Rivulet and Saca Valley. Szél et al. (1995) presents few leaf beetles species collected from Bor şa. Latest, some papers concerning the coleopterans from Maramure ş, also including the Rodna Mountains, were published by: Serafim (1997) - for Cerambycidae and Coccinellidae families; Proche ş (1998) - for Curculionidea; Stan (2002) - for Staphylinidae; Maican and Serafim (2001, 2004) and Maican (2007) - for Chrysomelidae; Nitzu et al. (2008), Merkl (2008). Investigations on the biodiversity of Maramure ş region and the National Park “Pietrosul Rodnei” were performed since 1995, within the “Knowledge of the invertebrates of Maramure ş” project, developed by the “Grigore Antipa” National Museum of Nature History of Bucharest. The objectives of this project were published by G ăldean and Pârvu (1997). Beetwen 1995 and 2004 several collecting trips were performed in Maramure ş area: the Maramure ş Depression, the catchment areas of the Iza, Mara and S ăpân ţa rivers, the Igni ş Plateau, the Ţible ş Mountains, the Maramure ş Mountains. Two expeditions were carried out in 1995 in the Pietrosul Rodnei Nature Park and on the valley of Iza River. MATERIALS AND METHODS The paper presents data about the distribution of the chrysomelid species in the Rodna Mountains, based on the study of the material collected during the expeditions made by “Grigore Antipa” National Museum’s team, in the period 1995-2004, and also on records from faunal papers published since 1887 up to 2008. The subfamilies within Chrysomelidae family are listed in the phylogenetic order, according to Seeno and Wilcox (1982). For each recorded species, the collecting sites and localities, the general distribution and the literature cited are given. The geographic distribution, the nomenclature and systematics are presented after Warchałowski (2003). The zoogeographical classification of the taxa is presented in accordance with information from the Gruev’s papers (2006 a, b). Abbreviations: S - Siberian complex (EAP - Euro Asiatic Palaearctic: SibE - Sibero-European; SsibE - Southsibero-European; TrPal - Transpalaearctic; Hpal - Holopalaearctic; H - Holarctic; EAAP - Euro-Asiatic-African Palaearctic). Res. 9, (2010), "The Rodna Mountains National Park" 125 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION On the basis of the information obtained until now, 138 chrysomelid species belonging to 11 subfamilies and 43 genera are reported from the Rodna Mountains, representing about 24.2% from the number of leaf beetles species mentioned in the Romanian fauna and 64.4% from the total species recorded in Maramure ş region (Tab. 1). Among them, aproximatively 26% are mountainous species (e.g. Chrysolina globipennis , C. hemisphaerica , C. carpathica , C. marcasitica , C. umbratilis , Oreina coerulea , O. intricata , O. Virgulata , O. viridis , Sclerophaedon carniolicus , S. carpathicus , Psylliodes glaber, Orestia aubei ). According to the information from the coleopterological literature, the following European endemics of the Alticinae have been recorded in the fauna of the Rodna Mountains: Orestia aubei , Minota carpathica , Longitarsus rubellus , Longitarsus pallidicornis , Neocrepidodera melanostoma and Phyllotreta christinae - all of them being distributed in most part of the European mountains. Neocrepidodera transsilvanica , Psylliodes frivaldszkyi , Chrysolina weisei and Sclerophaedon carpathicus are endemic species in the Carpathians. Also, Neocrepidodera cyanescens is endemic in the Alpine-Carpathian chain. Among the species mentioned in the older literature, Chrysolina weisei is a rare mountainous species, possible endemic to the Romanian Carpathians. The Minota obesa presence (Petri, 1912; from the Rodna Mountains) in the Romanian fauna is questionable. According to Gruev et al. (1993), the records of this species in Romania were possible based on the misidentified specimens of Minota halmae or M. carpathica . • Palaeoenvironmental Investigations Barry Taylor and Enid Allison
CHAPTER 19 Palaeoenvironmental Investigations Barry Taylor and Enid Allison Introduction Palaeoenvironmental studies have been an integral part of research at Star Carr since Clark’s first excavations at the site (Walker and Godwin 1954). Since then, a series of increasingly detailed studies have been undertaken, which have created an incredibly precise record of the local environment throughout the time the site was occupied (Cloutman and Smith 1988; Dark 1998a). Rather than replicate this work, the current project has sought to establish in more detail the environmental conditions associated with assemblages of archaeological material in order to provide a better record of the original depositional context. By bringing this together with the results of previous work at the site, it is possible to describe in more detail the environmental context in which the inhabitation of the site took place. Previous work The first palaeoenvironmental investigations at Star Carr were carried out between 1949 and 1951 by Harry Godwin and Donald Walker, and were undertaken as part of Grahame Clark’s excavations at the site (Walker and Godwin 1954). Their work focused primarily on the analysis of the peat stratigraphy recorded in the trenches, and plant macrofossils from the archaeological horizons, which they used to establish the character of the environment contemporary with human activity. The results were brought together withpollen analysis from samples taken from Clark’s cutting II, and data from a series of cores taken through the sediments beyond the extent of the excavations to create the first environmental history of the site. By the mid-1980s developments in palaeoecological methods, and the greater availability of radiocarbon dating, allowed a more detailed study of the lake edge environments to be carried out, this time by Ed Clout- man under the auspices of the Vale of Pickering Research Trust (Cloutman and Smith 1988).

BAuMGÄRTNER The Beetle (Coleoptera) and True bug (Heteroptera) species pool of the alpine “Pian di Gembro” wetland (Villa di Tirano, Italy) and its conservation Abstract - The Coleoptera and Heteroptera species pool was investigated in the “Pian di Gembro” wetland (Villa di Tirano, Sondrio, Italy). The wetland consists of a bog and its surroundings, referred to as wetland components, that are both subjected to a diversified intermediate management regime (DIMr). the application of the DIMr for plant species conservation resulted in the establishment of 11 wetland zones with a characteristic vegetation. In a three year sampling program, 997 Coleoptera and Heteroptera representing 141 species from 14 families were collected. Among these species, 64 species share both wetland components, 11 are restricted to the bog and 63 were found in the surroundings only. Among the species pool there were 23 tyrphophile taxa and only one tyrphobiont. With the exception of one zone, all zones are inhabited by zone-specific species. By taking into account both the general species pool and the pool of species of particular interest to conservationists, only one zone can be considered as redundant since it is inhabited by species that occur also in other zones. Hence, all the zones, with one exception, are effective for species pool conservation. the existing DIMr implemented for plant species conservation is also effective for conserving the species pool of coleoptera and Heteroptera.

In many countries, they are well established for environmental impact assessment, but even in the well-studied Central European fauna, species identification can be very difficult. A comprehensive and taxonomically well-curated DNA barcode library could remedy this deficit and could also link hundreds of years of traditional knowledge with next generation sequencing technology. However, such a beetle library is missing to date. This study provides the globally largest DNA barcode reference library for Coleoptera for 15 948 individuals belonging to 3514 well-identified species (53% of the German fauna) with representatives from 97 of 103 families (94%). This study is the first comprehensive regional test of the efficiency of DNA barcoding for beetles with a focus on Germany. Sequences ≥500 bp were recovered from 63% of the specimens analysed (15 948 of 25 294) with short sequences from another 997 specimens.

Hygrophilous species: Donacia brevicornis, Cryptocephalus janthinus, Prasocuris phellandrii, then thermophilous and xerophilous species: Crioceris quatuor- decimmaculatus, Xanthogaleruca luteola, Galerucella pusilla, G. calmariensis, Aphthona nigriscutis, A. pallida, A. lutescens, A. placida, Longitarsus tabidus, L. echii, Hippuriphila modeeri, Sphaeroderma rubidum, Psylliodes isatidis, Ps. ophiae, Hispa atra, Cassida flaveola, C. nobilis belong to the most interesting and valuable from the faunistical point of view. Occurrence of further 56 species was confirmed by the other authors in this area. Donacia cinerea, D. tomentosa, Plateumaris braccata, P. rustica, Zeugophora flavicollis, Altica lythri, Longitarsus linnaei, Argopus ahrensi belong to the most interesting and rarest species. In to- tal there are 224 species what means about 50% of Slovak chrysomelid fauna. Key words: Chrysomelidae, Coleoptera, Slovakia, Danube, faunistics ÚVOD Táto práca je faunistickým spracovaním výsledkov dvoch diplomových prác autora (MURÁNSKY 1996, 1997), ktoré sa zaoberajú výskumom spoločenstiev liskavkovitých (Co- leoptera, Chrysomelidae) vybraných druhov biotopov a drevín povodia Dunaja. Výskum sa uskutočňoval v rokoch 1993 až 1996. Príspevok zahŕňa zoznam druhov zistených na jednot- livých typoch biotopov spolu s faunistickými a bionomickými poznámkami.
