Chips from the Buzzsaw Weekly Newsletter of the Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento Folsom Prison Warden- Rick Hill Volume 71, No. 15 October 18, 2019

Past President Troy Bird introduced our speaker for Friday’s meeting- Rick Hill, Warden. Rick began his career as a Correctional Officer in 1984, with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). At the end of 2008, Rick was promoted to the Chief Deputy Warden at Folsom State Prison (FSP) before becoming the FSP Warden in late 2009. In December of 2013, Rick retired with nearly 30 years of service. During his retirement, Rick stayed active with CDCR; helping with special projects and at times mentoring newly appointed Wardens. On December 30, 2017, Rick accepted the position of acting Warden at FSP and on November 14, 2018, Rick was reinstated as the Warden of Folsom State Prison. Mr. Hill considers himself to be an old historian and feels honored to be able to work in the historic Folsom facility. With over 3,300 inmates, Folsom State Prison is the only facility in California that oversees male and female inmates. According to Rick, “it’s all about rehabilitation.” Inmates have the opportunity to get trained in automotive, masonry, plumbing and electrical trades. With online performing testing and being taught by industry professionals, inmates are learning marketable skills that enable them to get jobs upon their release from prison. Club 558 of District 5180 Rick explained that one of the biggest challenges he faces is the constant inflow of PO Box 288 illegal drugs that get smuggled inside the prison walls. Without enough cameras West Sacramento, CA 95691 and a constant stream of visitors every weekend, it is very difficult to keep the Meets Every Friday at drugs out of the hands of inmates who either feed their own addictions or sell to Club Pheasant, 12:15 other inmates struggling with their own. PETER’S PRINCIPAL Opening Remarks From Friday’s Meeting

On October 18 (1018), National Exascale Day celebrates the scientists and researchers who make breakthrough discoveries in medicine, materials sciences, energy and beyond with the help of some of the fastest supercomputers in the world. We like to say that National Exascale Day celebrates those who keep asking what if, why not, and what’s next — with the advanced technology to attain the answers. Celebrate the geeks, gurus, and geniuses who keep asking the big questions and are changing the world! To get you started, hug a scientist. I am Peter Anderson and it is days like these that make me proud to be the 71st President of the Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento!

What do we really know about … Dustin Dumars An investigative report from CHIPS cub reporter, Tim Carnahan Seeing as Treasurer is the one who handles all of the club’s money, it makes sense to at least do a cur- sory check of Dustin “Dusty” Dumars background and character. After all, he’s only been a member for 26 months. At any rate, certain basic info can be found in our Club-Runner app. So we’ll regurgi- tate the basics here, for your convenience. Right away we found a very reassuring trait of our treasurer – he is a C.P.A. and has been crunching numbers and counting beans professionally for 8 years. He and his wife Jonell live here in West Sacramento and are raising quite a family with children aged 5½, 4, 1 and one more on the way. So far, everything is copasetic. It wasn’t until our exclusive CHIPS interview with Dustin last Friday that the bombshell dropped. When asked the very simple question of whether he had ever been in jail, our club Treasurer and holder of all our assets said, “I plead the Fifth.” What?? This could be the biggest financial scandal to hit our club since Jim “Enron Engstrom handled our club’s dough. Of course we didn’t want to make any rash assumptions about any of Dustin’s potentially unethical dealings, but then we found out he has gone to the trouble of radically changing his appearance. (Compare his high school pho- to and his current likeness.) Is Dustin hiding from anyone? Our sit-down interview went quite a lot better, after that. We determined that Dustin graduated from Cal State University, San Marcos where he served as V.P. of the ac- counting club. His hobbies include golf, and playing in bands (drums and piano). His musicianship had to be part of the reason he wowed us with his ZZ Top impersonation at last year’s Anniversary Dinner. Former member Verna Sulpizio was Dustin’s nominator to our club. A couple of his relatives and friends al- ready were Rotarians and he wanted to give back … so he joined. Dustin says his great- est passion is raising his kids, but his greatest passion in Rotary is serving the local com- munity with programs like ‘Meals on Wheels’. He obviously has a fondness for Club Ser- vice as well, as this is his second consecutive Dustin has somehow managed to “move” his afro as seen in his high school ASB card, down to the bottom of his face as shown in his current, year as our Treasurer. slightly disturbing Christmas picture. And Youth Services, too, as evidenced by his involvement in the back- pack program. And as for whether we should be nervous about Dustin being our Treasurer? Not at all. He can’t be as bad as the folks he replaced. (Just a joke, Chris B. and Jim E.)
