As vaccine roll out is proving to be successful in Minnesota and across the nation, more controversy arises surrounding the idea of where COVID-19 truly stemmed from. Many theories have arisen from the idea that COVID-19 was designed by the Chinese government to weaken the government to the idea that the virus didn’t even start in China. While these theories are quite interesting to listen to, most health officials agree that the virus started in one of the markets in Wuhan, China and spread from humans coming into contact with an infected bat. However, most recently Robert Redfield, the ex-CDC director appointed under Donald Trump, told CNN he believes the virus that causes COVID-19 was accidentally released from a lab in Wuhan, China. He offered no true explanation for this remark except for the fact that as a virologist himself, he does not believe the virus could have been so contagious when it jumped directly from animal to human. Instead, he claims the virus was manipulated in a Wuhan research lab to be highly contagious and was then accidentally released to a worker in September or October of 2019, a few months before the public was aware of the virus. While the World Health Organization had briefly considered the idea that COVID was created in a lab back when the virus had just stemmed, the investigation was quickly abandoned and the research regarding this theory was discontinued. Furthermore, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the NIH director, clearly stated that most health officials disagree with this theory. Dr. Fauci stated that if the virus was artificially created in a lab that means it would already be well-adapted to humans, but studies show that the virus continued to spread and adapt in the months of November and December of 2019 in Wuhan, China, and as the virus adapted to have greater efficiency of transmissibility it started to get recognized. This then disproves Refield’s claim. The WHO is continuing to investigate where and how COVID-19 emerged the way it did, but one thing is certain — there is little to no chance that this virus was created in a laboratory. Covid-19’s Unequal Impact By Gavin Sun

With over 16% of our population fully vaccinated against Covid-19, vaccinations are beginning to ramp up. In fact, Minnesota recently allowed all 16+ individuals to sign up for a vaccination. It might appear that the coronavirus will be a fleeting memory by the end of summer; however, it has only made inequality in America more apparent, and that will be a legacy of Covid. In 2019, 10.9% of the U.S population didn’t have health insurance, with the vast majority belonging to low income brackets. On top of that, Blacks and Hispanics are 1.5x and 2.5x (respectively) more likely to be uninsured when compared to Whites. All of these factors combine with the prevalence of food deserts, subpar healthcare, and underfunded school systems in marginalized communities to form the underlying health inequality in America. Covid-19 has shown that America needs to address these problems faster. On average, Blacks, Indigenous peoples, and Hispanics are ~3x more likely than whites to be hospitalized from Covid and ~2x more likely to die from it. The coronavirus has also widened the gap in education (access to technology), increased unemployment (6.2% vs 3.5% pre-pandemic), and exposed distrust in America’s healthcare system. To move forward and pursue equity for all, America has a lot of options when it comes to reforming healthcare, combating poverty, and building resilient communities/infrastructure. Now the question is will America act on it?

March Madness By Nikhil Jain After missing out on the tournament last year, we had a very exciting March Madness this year. Entering the tournament, Gonzaga was a heavy favorite as they were undefeated and looking to complete the perfect season. They had rolled through their opponents during the season. Gonzaga would continue to do this until they reached the final four, where they met 11 seed UCLA who had upset everybody they had played so far, including the one seed Michigan, just to make it to the final four. Here, Gonzaga was taken to overtime and needed a halfcourt buzzer beater by former Minnesota star Jaylen Suggs in order to take the game from UCLA. On the other side, Baylor had also had a great season. They had a few losses but still were considered the second best in the tournament. Similarly to Gonzaga, they ran through everyone they played but even in the final four they beat Houston handily. This set up the national championship between the two best teams in the nation. Everyone was excited for the game, including myself. I expected a close game or a Gonzaga blowout like most others but I was wrong. Baylor came to play and led the game from start to finish. They believed they were the better team and they proved it on the court by winning the national championship in front of the whole world.

NBA Draft By Nikhil Jain Like most timberwolves fans, I am already looking at the upcoming NBA draft. This season has not been kind to us as we are currently in last place in the NBA. Luckily, if we get a top three pick in the draft, we don’t have to send our pick this year to the warriors. It is looking like that might just happen but you never know with the draft lottery. If we do get a top three pick, I think there are five players we should be looking at. The first is the best player in the draft, Cade Cunningham. He is with a jump shot. The next is . He would solve our needs at power forward. Third is Jaylen Suggs. He has proven he is a winner and played great in the tourney. Fourth and fifth are Jaylen Green and Jonathan Kuminga. Both prospects played in the G League this year and looked great. I think the top 3 are a step above the next two. Hopefully, we get to take one of those guys to turn our franchise around.
