Learning in a Hackerspace Alex Megelas This qualitative research project considers the acquisition of technological literacy in the lived, physical context of the Foulab hackerspace, a community of practice located in Montreal, Quebec. Hackerspaces are an offshoot of hacker culture. They are physical sites (garages, lofts) where individuals who sometimes self-identify as hackers come together to share tools and knowledge, and collaborate on projects of a technological nature. As educational communities, hackerspaces are member-led and member-funded. Initiatives stemming from hackerspaces including computer programming, electrical design and small electronics projects. Power Up! participants were six individuals, including the lead researcher, who all identified themselves as having experienced barriers to engaging with technology. The research objective was to see how (if) Foulab would contribute to participants overcoming their reluctances, successfully complete a project and in so doing, acquire mastery over the tools and knowledge required. Participants were required to design and build a bicycle-powered electricity generator with the support of the Foulab membership, facilities and tools. iii While the project was successfully completed, there were clashes between the lab and Power Up! project which prevented the project from being fully integrated into Foulab. The research project documents this and how, as a result, Power Up! grew into its own peer-based learning community. Participants met at Foulab weekly for ten weeks. At the onset of the project, participants were asked to take part in a written reflection and a group conversation in order to consider their prior and current engagement with technology. Participants then began to develop a methodology for working together that first saw them engage in research into the theoretical fundamentals of electrical conductivity and electrical project design. They then came up with a design for the bicycle-powered generator and gathered the tools and parts necessary to assemble it. This process, and the participants' engagement with each other and with Foulab, was documented in field notes by the lead researcher. At the conclusion of the project, participants took part in a group discussion to reflect on the experience. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There are many people to whom I am indebted for their immensely kind and encouraging contributions to my educational journey. In the sense of directing and aligning energy, however, power is neither inherently evil, nor necessarily conflictual (though it can be both in specific cases). It is a condition for the possibility of socially organized action. (Wenger 2000, 180) Power is used to create an effect – whether that effect be physical or otherwise. One person can be said to have power over another. To empower people is to increase their access to social or political power. It also refers to electrical current. To power-up in a computer game is to get an immediate increase in the abilities of your character. In July of 2008, my friends the Avocado, Clever Duster and Jonesey1 headed down to the Last HOPE conference.2,i All three of them like to build all sorts of different contraptions and have picked up this affinity and connected skills “along the way” without necessarily relying on formal education. Since the HOPE conference covers a great many of these related skills (from soldering to computer programming), it made sense for the three of them to head down and check it out.3 While there though, they were introduced to hackerspaces, a significant and new development in hacker culture. 1 Members of hacker culture often use handles when identifying themselves (i.e., on Internet bulletin boards). Handles are short nicknames that help hide one's identity while nevertheless allowing for individual distinction. Marco Deseriis (2011) writes about the significances of online aliases that allow for anonymity: “On the one hand, improper names empower a subaltern social group by providing anonymity and a medium for mutual recognition to its users”. Except for project participants who consented to my using their real identities, I’ve changed the names and handles of all those we came into contact to whom I refer to herein. 2 HOPE stands for Hackers on Planet Earth. 3 I was initially going to head down as well, but then I went through a breakup and had to stay in town to move apartments and generally get my life in order. 1 Hackerspaces are physical sites in which individuals, who self-identify as hackers congregate to share tools, collaborate on projects, hold workshops and learn from each other. When my friends came back from NYC, they and some of the Montrealers they met while there, decided, along with some others,4 to start up Foulab,ii a hackerspace. Foulab was one of the first ten or so hackerspaces in North America although since then, hundreds of others have opened up. They are dynamic, fiercely autonomous communities, which allow for a wide variety of learning experiences and technological innovations. They are garages and lofts, chaotically filled with all sort of tools, discarded technology, and in-progress projects with varying degrees of usefulness and applicability. They are communities of practice and educational sites and as a social phenomenon, they are new in North America, and were widely popularized through the HOPE conference.5,iii Forward two years. It's July 2010 and I was on a train with the Avocado and his seven-year-old son.

During the years of the crisis, throughout the country urban and rural communities of struggle have been formed, which tend to employ instituent practices and to acquire constitutive characteristics, in order to collectively address unmet social needs / desires and ensure their collective survival. In this context, socially reproductive commons in germ form have emerged with social and solidarity economy initiatives in their peripheries, alternative forms of life in common have been shaped and societies have been set in motion with the potential to establish the material foundations of their collective autonomy. Within this huge gap of social (re)production, the constituent power of social movements emerges in germ form as a resurgent force with the potential to address these needs and desires and, correspondingly, shape life in common. In the neoliberal era, it is this potential of a constituent counter - power that has the capacity to constitute the contending power to the dominant force of the capital - state complex. Denisa Kera INTRODUCTION The Do-It-Youself biology (DIYbio) movement originated in the U.S. in approximately 2009 around student iGEM synthetic biology competitions (durrett; field 2011; kuznetsov et al. 2012) as well as parallel open biology efforts in Europe and Asia with their connections to bioart and critical science practices in the late 1990s (bureaud; malina; whiteley, 2014). This movement merged in recent years with other movements coming from professional scientists advocating eScience, Open Science, Open Access and Open Data (neylon; wu, 2009; molloy, 2011; uhlir; schröder, 2007). The calls for changing the publishing model and opening the datasets while supporting online collaboration and crowdsourcing are starting to merge with attempts to reduce the cost of experimental research and increase reproducibility by building low cost customizable laboratory equipment (pearce, 2014; landrain et al. 2013). This convergence of hackerspace and makerspace OSHW interests with open science goals (open data, open access, online collaboration) created some unique opportunities to involve 134 Denisa Kera citizen scientists, but also scientists from the developing countries in alternative global research networks (kera, 2012A; kera, 2013). In this paper we want to reflect upon the critical role of open hardware in forming these unique South to South and South to North networks and research cooperation. We will analyse the issue as a form of “geek diplomacy” over open science. Geek diplomacy is a citizen, grassroots involvement in science which bridges various knowledge and infrastructural divides to create a more inclusive R&D response to challenging international political, social and scientific issues.

    Introduction Making and Hacking Annika Richterich and Karin Wenz “While hacking is a wonderful way of viewing the world, ‘making’ was a more positive framing for customizing and changing the world.” (DOUGHERTY 2014) In August 2014, hackerspaces in the Netherlands issued an open letter to the Dutch Public Prosecution Service (PPS): in this document, members of hacker communi- ties from Amsterdam, Heerlen, Utrecht and other cities called upon the govern- mental institution to revise the definition of ‘hacking’ as presented on its website (Walboer et al. 2014). While the PPS described it as “breaking into computers without permission”, the hackerspace members highlighted that hacking refers to citizens’ creative engagement with technologies. Opposing the reduction of hacking to illegal activities, they described hacking as exploration of technological possibilities and boundaries in unforeseen, innovative ways. Even though this particular initiative was started in the Netherlands, the letter echoes wider, historical as well as ongoing negotiations regarding the meanings and origins of hacking. It seems closely related to earlier requests such as an open letter to the Wall Street Journal which was written more than 20 years ago by Richard Stallman (presumably). In this letter, the founder of the Free Software Foundation states: There’s nothing shameful about the hacking I do. But when I tell people I am a hacker, people think I’m admitting something naughty – because newspapers such as yours misuse the word ‘hacker’, giving the impression that it means ‘security breaker’ and nothing else. You are giving hackers a bad name. In a paper published last year, I argued for a different way of understanding the emergence of hacker culture. (Winn 2013) In doing so, I outlined an account of ‘the university’ as an institution that provided the material and subsequent intellectual conditions that early hackers were drawn to and in which they worked. The key point I tried to make was that hacking was originally a form of academic labour that emerged out of the intensification and valorisation of scientific research within the institutional context of the university. The reproduction of hacking as a form of academic labour took place over many decades as academics and their institutions shifted from an ideal of unproductive, communal science to a more productive, entrepreneurial approach to the production of knowledge. As such, I view hacking as a peculiar, historically situated form of labour that arose out of friction in the academy: vocation vs. profession; teaching vs. research; basic vs. applied research; research vs. development; private vs. 1 public; war vs. peace; institutional autonomy vs. state dependence; scientific communalism vs. intellectual property; individualism vs. co-operation.     “Hacking and Making: Meanings, Practices, Spaces” Call for Papers for the fourth Issue of Digital Culture & Society http://digicults.org/callforpapers/hacking-and-making Abstract deadline: 16th May 2016 In 2014, hackerspaces in the Netherlands issued an open letter to the Dutch Public Prosecution Service (PPS): In this document, members of hacker communities from Amsterdam, Heerlen, Utrecht and other cities called upon the governmental institution to revise the definition of ‘hacking’ as it was presented on its website.1 While the PPS defined hacking as “breaking into computers without permission”, the hackerspace members highlighted that hacking means to creatively engage with technologies and to explore them in ways which were not foreseen by their original producers. Opposing the reduction of hacking to illegal activities, they described hacking as exploration of technological boundaries and possibilities. Even though this particular plea was initiated in the Netherlands, the letter indicates wider, ongoing negotiations regarding the meaning(s) and origins of hacking.2 In popular culture and more general public discourses, hacking is still closely associated with illegal activities related to breaking into computer systems. Attempts to dissociate such illegal practices from the term ‘hacking’ by introducing concepts such as ‘cracker/cracking’ or ‘black-hat’ were largely unsuccessful. Within hacktivism, various disruptive digital practices are utilised for activist purposes and interventions − some of them being highly contested among involved actors. Scholars such as Gabriella Coleman have empirically explored and shown how practices of hacking have been relevant to activist movements such as anonymous.3 Being rooted in the assumption that individuals need to be able to open up/deconstruct technology in order to improve and apply their knowledge, hacking has been and still is closely related to developers’ involvement in free/libre and open source projects.
