Senior Community Distance Learning

The Carter Library is committed to continue providing quality programming to Senior Community groups and organizations during the Covid-19 pandemic. Our Education staff offers flexibility to deliver distance learning programming on a variety of topics related to the Carter Presidency, American Civics and Government, and the Mission, Vision and Values of the National Archives and Records Administration.

All programming is free of charge, with a minimum of 10 participants required for consideration. Requestor also agrees to host the program on a distance learning platform approved by their organization (Carter Library staff will present as co-host).

This elephant figurine was given to Amy Carter personally by Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United States Neville Kanakaratne, at the National Zoo in Washington D.C. on April 2, 1977.

Amy also accepted a real 1-year-old Asian elephant named "Shanthi" on behalf of the children of America. Shanthi lived for 45 years at the National Zoo before passing in June 2020. Her baby, Kandula (b.2001), lives at the Oklahoma City Zoo.

One such event took place at the on February 23, 1979, when President Jimmy and First Lady presented Living Legacy Awards to Black elders for achievements in the areas of art, education, medicine, business, politics, religion, and other fields. In addition to being barrier breakers in their professions, many of the recipients were also dedicated, long- time civil rights activists.

Martin, a journalist, newspaper publisher, civil rights activist and advisor to three Presidents, including Jimmy Carter.
