If you want great diner food, Happy Diner on Centre Street has your choices and Mexican dishes, too. There’s also Happy Diner 2 in Northwest San Pedro with the identical menu. And Happy Deli has the very best sandwiches in town (breakfast, too). If you’re in Northwest San Pedro, drop into The Origi- nal Las Brisas for amazing regional Mexican food.

Want waterfront dining? Try the Catalina Bistro & Express Grill at Berth 95 at the Catalina Express Terminal. One of its big events is the Harbor Wide All Grades Student Art Com- petition and Exhibition.

Our Creations in Downtown San Pedro has been the go-to spot for craft and wedding supplies for nearly 30 years. It’s also known as the Dia de Los Muertos headquarters in the region. In recent years it has become a great place to learn to paint. And the painting classes are expanding. Drop in for some great deals as the supplies are cleared out to make more room for paintings.

Mario Mirkovich is known as one of the finest artists in Southern California. And as one of the best painters of scenes from the region. And he’s an interna- tional sensation, having started out in Croatia. Today, he is sharing his skill and knowledge with new generations of painters to teach them the very best techniques. Mario’s Art Gallery showcases his beautiful works and Mario also offers painting classes.

Violet Parkhurst was a greatly loved painter. And her legacy lives on at Parkhurst Galleries in Downtown San Pedro. You’ll find many of her works on display, as well as newer artists that include Cao Yong. It offers Painting With the Masters, a series of classes that teach new artists, as well as experienced painters to become masters themselves. The gallery also does appraisal services for art.

Let’s start with Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. This wonderful institution is a research aquarium that makes everything approachable and understandable, all while doing important science. It offers events for the whole family. We’re so proud of our great aquarium. (And it’s got great architecture designed by the renowned Frank Gehry. A must-see.

San Pedro loves its ocean. And there are many ways to get out on the water.

One of the most fun is with the Los Angeles Mar- itime Institute’s (LAMI) tall ships, the Exy Johnson, Irving Johnson, and soon the Swift of Ipswich (the ship that was Jimmy Cagney’s personal yacht and is now undergoing restoration). LAMI offers its TopSail youth leadership sail training program plus lots of sailings for the community.

Don’t know how to sail? No problem. Los Angeles Yacht Club offers American Sailing Association certified lessons for beginners and those with experi- ence. And its Women on Water program is a friendly and safe environment to get women out on the water.

The Palos Verdes Land Conservancy (PVPLC) has preserved more than 1,600 acres of natural land over its 32 years in existence. But it’s not just preserved land; PVPLC offers a wide range of programs that get people into nature. Continued on page 6…
