    Scientific paper Creation and Analysis of the Yugoslav Rock Song Lyrics Corpus from 1967 to 20031 UDC 811.163.41’322 DOI 10.18485/infotheca.2019.19.1.1 Ljudmila Petkovi´c ABSTRACT: The paper analyses the pro- [email protected] cess of creation and processing of the Yu- University of Belgrade goslav rock song lyrics corpus from 1967 to Belgrade, Serbia 2003, from the theoretical and practical per- spective. The data have been obtained and XML-annotated using the Python program- ming language and the libraries lyricsmas- ter/yattag. The corpus has been preprocessed and basic statistical data have been gener- ated by the XSL transformation. The diacritic restoration has been carried out in the Slovo Majstor and LeXimir tools (the latter appli- cation has also been used for generating the frequency analysis). The extraction of socio- cultural topics has been performed using the Unitex software, whereas the prevailing top- ics have been visualised with the TreeCloud software. KEYWORDS: corpus linguistics, Yugoslav rock and roll, web scraping, natural language processing, text mining. President: Christina Carroll Would it be Frankie Yankovic playing his accordion and singing about you and me under the silk umbrella (Židana Marela Polka)? Or would it be the Original Oberkrainer (Ansambel Avsenik) performing Trompetenecho? This is the type of music that most Slovenian-Americans recognize and relate to. When people left their homes and families behind in Slovenia/Austrian Empire to come to America to reinvent their lives in the mines and factories in Michigan’s UP, the Iron Range in Minnesota, and the cities of Cleveland, Chicago, and Milwaukee, they wanted to remember a little bit of “home”. Various singing choirs and musicians organized to replicate the melodies and sounds that they knew when they were growing up. Folk melodies were what they remembered. Over the past 30 years, the UWM Slovenian Arts Council presented various music programs that featured Slovenian performers and/or Slovenian compositions. Not all performers were from Slovenia, not all music sounded like familiar Slovenian folk tunes. Our goal was to showcase various types of music for the enjoyment and enrichment of the Slovenian-American commu- nity and the public at large. Singers and musicians from Slovenia consisted of the Deseti Brat Oktet, Navihanke, Vlado Kreslin, Perpetuum Jazzile, Slovenski Oktet, and the Lojze Slak Ansambel, performing folk, classical, and contemporary compositions. But other programs also featured the Singing Slovenes from Minnesota; from Cleveland, the Jeff Pecon Band, Fantje Na Vasi, and the Fantje’s next generation singers, Mi Smo Mi.

Maxine Bruhns The dignity of a great hall bearing tributes to creative men, ancient clans, edu- cation, and the nobility of freedom is felt in the Scottish Nationality Room. The oak doors are adapted from the entrance to Rowallan Castle in Ayrshire. Above the doors and cabinet are lines lauding freedom from The Brus by John Barbour . On either side of the sandstone fireplace are matching kists, or chests. A portrait of Scotland’s immortal poet, Robert Burns, dominates above the mantel. Above the portrait is the cross of St. Andrew, Scotland’s patron saint. Bronze figures representing 13th– and 14th-century patriots William Wallace and Robert the Bruce stand on the mantel near an arrangement of dried heather. The blackboard trim bears a proverb found over a door in 1576: “Gif Ye did as ye should Ye might haif as Ye would.” Names of famous Scots are carved on blackboard panels and above the mantel. Student chairs are patterned after one owned by John Knox. An aumbry, or wall closet, pro- vided the inspiration for the display cabinet. The plaster frieze bears symbols of 14 clans Oak Door whose members served on the Room’s committee. The wrought-iron chandelier design was inspired by an iron coronet retrieved from the battlefield at Bannockburn (1314). Located in the dining room (triclinium) of a wealthy Roman villa, the pavement, which contains five remarkably preserved panels depicting famous scenes from Greco-Roman mythology, is simply stunning in its artistic quality and scope. Constructed during the fourth century CE, the floor is a reflection of the considerable pros- perity of late Roman Cyprus and a window into the private world of a confident Mediterranean elite.2 Yet if the magnificence of the mosaic program has been conceded by all, its interpretation has proven more controversial. Although the scenes themselves are easily identifiable, being explicitly labeled by the artist, their meaning has been vigorously debated.3 Indeed, several prominent scholars, including the head exca- vator of the villa, W. A. Daszewski, have noticed an unsettling pattern in the layout of the panels.4 When read as part of a continuous sequence, the thematic content of these pagan scenes seems to mirror, in exact order, key scenes from the life of Jesus as depicted in the canonical Christian Gospels.
