The series follows Ping and Pong as they find musical inspiration in unlikely places. While having fun with words and sounds, they come up with the most fantastical tunes imaginable. They have friends from all over the world who visit them in Melody Meadow, and with them, they bring their musical and cultural traditions as well as their instruments. Ping and Friends help young viewers grow their vocabulary, discover rhythm and rhyme, and experience an array of musical genres from rock to Bossa Nova. In the words of the show’s producers: “If life is a song, then Ping and Friends are going to sing it!” The launch of the cartoon series on TVO Kids is settled for November 12th 2018 at 6:37 AM and will continue at a rate of two episodes a week. Subsequently, the series will be available throughout various channels in Canada in French and in English including Télé-Québec, TFO and the Knowledge Network in British Columbia. In Latin America Discovery Kids will start airing November 17th 2018 in Spanish and Portuguese Based on the Ping and Friends TV show and simultaneously launched on TVOKids’ website are 3 musical games that explore sound, rhythm and melody. Of the nearly 300 premieres* in the Ibero-American region, less than 20 have been directed by women, and less than ten are co-directed by at least one woman and one man. These figures help us focus on gender representativeness and the types of worlds and characters that are portrayed in animated films aimed at children and young and adult audiences, highlighting the gender gap in the industry. The figures in terms of premieres and projects in development call for a change that can’t be just lectures and meetings- proactive measures are needed to achieve a much-desired gender equality. By Marta García Since the launch of the first animated feature film in history, “The Apostle” by Quirino Cristiani in 1917, about 60 animated features have been released in Argentina, according to data from INCAA (Instituto de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales de Argentina); of which only ten were directed by women. In 2002, María Valentini led the way with “Bahía mágica”, a co-production by Cine Media Group, Naya Films, Cinecolor, JZ y Asociados and Mundo Marino with MDA Films from Spain, about a female biologist with a passion for animals. In 2007, Liliana Romero co-directed “Martín Fierro, la película” with Norman Ruiz (Aleph Media, Argentina/ Maíz Producciones, Spain). -

Non-normative Family on Children’s Television Queering Kinship, Temporality and Reproduction in Steven Universe Paulína Kožuchová Supervisor's name: Tara Mehrabi Gender Studies, LiU Master’s Programme Gender Studies – Intersectionality and Change Master’s thesis 30 ECTS credits ISNR: LIU-THEME G / GSIC2-A-18/002-SE Abstract The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to examine queer aspects of the animated television show Steven Universe (2013-present), created by Rebecca Sugar and produced by Cartoon Network. Situating Steven Universe in the context of Cartoon Network and children’s animation in general, and drawing on queer theory, as well as feminist cultural studies and kinship studies, the thesis aims to contribute to understanding of non-normative family representation in children’s entertainment. Through a close reading of the material, the thesis explores how Steven Universe queers the notion of family. It focuses on the show’s depiction of kinship, temporality and reproduction, and examines how each of these aspects subverts reproduces different modes of normativity. In Steven Universe, the family of the main character, Steven, is depicted as socially unintelligible, and as a mixture of biological and chosen kinship, highlighting the importance of both. It places great emphasis on being accepted by one’s family and community, and I discuss how this message can be both empowering and undermining. Steven’s family mostly inhabits queer time and does not give in to chrononormative structures. However, I also explore and critically evaluate parts of the series in which queer temporality is provisionally replaced by chrononormativity and striving for maturity.
