Remarkable Records of Aquatic Molluscs in the Lipno Reservoir and Its Environs
Silva Gabreta vol. 10 p. 97–106 Vimperk, 2004 Remarkable records of aquatic molluscs in the Lipno Reservoir and its environs Libor Dvořák1,* & Luboš Beran2 1Šumava NP and PLA Administration, Sušická 399, CZ-34192 Kašperské Hory,Czech Republic 2Kokořínsko PLA Administration, Česká 149, CZ-27601 Mělník,Czech Republic *[email protected] Abstract This paper summarizes all published and unpublished data for aquatic Gastropods and Bivalves of the Lipno Reservoir and its environs (SW Bohemia, Šumava PLA). To date, 23 species of Mollusca (10 Gastropods, 13 Bivalves) were recorded from the area. The higher elevation of localities of Unio tumidus, U. pictorum, Anodonta cygnea, Segmentina nitida, and Pisidium milium are the most remarkable findings of this study. Key words: Gastropoda, Bivalvia, faunistic studies, conservation and aquatic habitat alteration. INTRODUCTION In southern Bohemia, the year 2003 was very poor in precipitation compared to the annual average. In a dry year like this, evaporation was very high as well. Consequently, inflow of all streams into the Lipno Reservoir was ca. 1.6 m3.sec–1, while outflow (mandated by law with respect to water flows on the Vltava River) was ca. 6 m3.sec–1. The main consequence of these events was lowering of the water level in the Lipno Reservoir. During autumn of 2003 the water level was more than 3.5 m below the maximum stage (725.6 m a.s.l.). These circum- stances facilitated the search for aquatic molluscs normally living on bottom beyond the water’s edge vegetation. The search turned-up some very interesting findings. Together with historic data from this region, the results are presented in this paper. -

PAPÁČEK Abstract: PAPÁČEK M.: On the benthic water bug Aphelocheirus aestivalis (FABRICIUS 1794) (Heteroptera, Aphelocheiridae): Minireview. Diagnostic characters of Aphelochirus aestivalis are listed, re-examined and figured in detail. Distribution, habitats, conservation status and biology of the species are briefly reviewed. Key words: Aphelocheirus aestivalis, diagnosis, distribution, habitats, biology. Introduction Aphelocheirus (Aphelocheirus) aestivalis (FABRICIUS 1794) was described as Naucoris aestivalis by FIEBER (1794: 66) who also characterized type material locality only by brief note: ‘Habitat in Galliae aquis Muf. Dom. Bofc.’. Historical name Gallia was used by Romans for Belgium, France, northern Italy, western Switzerland and parts of the Netherland and Germany. FABRICIUS (1794) meant most probably France. Exact holo- type locality is unknown and holotype is missing. For this reason LANSBURY (1965, p. 109) designated the lectotype (&, France) that is deposited in The Oxford University Museum, Hope Entomological Collections, Oxford, Great Britain. Furthermore KANYUKOVA (1995, p. 61) surveyed the synonymy of A. aestivalis (shortened version see below): Aphelocheirus breviceps HORVÁTH 1895: 160 (syn. KANYUKOVA 1974: 1730) Aphelocheirus kervillei KUHLGATZ 1898: 114 (syn. HORVÁTH 1899: 262) Aphelocheirus nigrita HORVÁTH 1899: 257, 263 (syn. -

Program Notes for Classics 1: The Bohemian Spirit • Smetana – “The Moldau” from Má vlast • Beethoven – Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37 • Dvořák – Symphony No. 7 in D minor, Op. 70 Bedřich Smetana “The Moldau” from Má vlast (My Country) THE VITAL STATS Composer: born March 2, 1824, Leitomischl (now Litomyšl), Bohemia; died May 12, 1884, Prague Works composed: Smetana wrote his six patriotic symphonic poems Má vlast between 1872-79. The second of these, The Moldau, was composed in three weeks during November 1874. World premiere: Adolf Čech conducted the first performance The Moldau on April 4, 1875, in Prague Instrumentation: piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, bass drum, cymbals, triangle, 2 harps and strings. Estimated duration: 15, 11, 11 and 13 minutes, respectively During the years 1874-1879, Bedřich Smetana worked on a series of symphonic poems titled Má Vlast (My Country). The most famous of these, The Moldau (Vltava), written in late November-early December of 1874, musically represents the river Moldau, which flows through the countryside near Smetana’s childhood home in Bohemia. Smetana’s family was determined to preserve their national heritage and their native tongue from extinction by Austria’s systematic oppression of all things Czech. Because of that country’s deliberate attempts to destroy Czech as a living language, Smetana himself learned only German in school and spoke no Czech until adulthood. He felt it his mission as a composer to find and develop the Czech voice in music; this goal became the defining factor of Smetana’s compositional style and the driving spirit behind his creative impulses. -

Prague: the Jewel of Eastern Europe 28° 32° June 4-12, 2021 80° 79° 78° 77°
Prague: The Jewel of Eastern Europe 28° 32° June 4-12, 2021 80° 79° 78° 77° Prague, capital city of the Czech Republic, is bisected by 32° 36° 76° the Vltava River. Nicknamed “the City of a Hundred Spires,” it is known for its Old Town Square, the heart of its historic core, with colorful baroque buildings, Gothic churches and the medieval Astronomical Clock, which gives an animated hourly show. Completed in 1402, the iconic, pedestrian Charles Bridge is lined with statues of Catholic saints, recalling its past as the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. The Czech Republic is one of Europe’s recent success stories. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, it has celebrated its freedom and independence with wide sweeping reforms and a new-found economic prosperity. Much of this progress reached its peak when, on May 1st 2004, they were admitted to membership of the European Union. Much of its charm, however, lies in the history and cultural wealth that its ancient position in Europe created. While our tour focuses on the capital city of Prague, we will also explore the rural side of the country with excursions to the provinces and a dinner cruise along the Vltava River, that for so long dominated the region’s commerce. This then is truly one of the jewels of Eastern Europe. Prague Program Highlights reserve early! • Welcome dinner evening of arrival; • Walking tour of Prague around Wenceslas Square and the Old Town with its famous Astronomical Clock atop the 14th-century Town Hall. We’ll continue through the Jewish $3,699 Ghetto to St. -

Travels Through History Past & Present in Prague and Central Bohemia By Martin Votruba While I was born and raised in Southern California, my parents migrated from, what was then, Czechoslovakia in the late 1960’s – when Communism control intensified and they felt threatened. They left behind family members in Prague, and in a couple smaller outlying towns, and relocated to Los Angeles, California. Growing up, we only spoke Czech at home; my parents reasoned that I would learn and practice plenty of English at school. I have always been proud of my family roots and I am grateful to retain some of the language and culture. In the early 1980s, while Czechoslovakia was still under communist control, my parents sent me there to visit some of the family they left behind. I spent about six weeks with aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents in and around Prague.
