It is the first in a series of three papers to be published in the Journal of African Studies and Development. The current paper shall interrogate the pre-colonial political structures that culminated in the formation of the Gyaman state. It also discusses the socio-politico-economic activities of the Gyaman people before colonial domination by both the British and the French. The discussion of the early history of Gyaman and its constitution is important as it sets the background for understanding the Gyaman people and their history of resilience and also sets the background for understanding subsequent modern issues confronting this great West African traditional state. A Thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE in Development Policy and Planning, College of Architecture and Planning SEPTEMBER, 2011 DECLARATION I hereby declare that this work is my own work towards the Master of Science degree and that to the best of my knowledge, it contains no material previously published by another person nor material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree of the University, except where due acknowledgement has been made in the text. (Supervisor) Signature Date Certified by: Dr. Imoro Braimah ……………………… .……………………… Head, Department of Planning Signature Date ii ABSTRACT Effective poverty reduction in Ghana is underpinned by sustainable local economic growth and development. It is for this reason that the Government of Ghana aims to ensure local ownership of development interventions. One way of ensuring local economic development is through the promotion of non-traditional agricultural commodities such as cashew. With the Brong Ahafo Region‟s comparative advantage in the production of cashew, the industry has gained currency with several farmers engaged by it. Following this the study sought to assess the contribution of the cashew industry to the local economic development towards poverty reduction. With data from both primary and secondary sources, the study identified that first; the cashew industry has provided employment to about 8,233 people in Jaman North, Tain, Wenchi and Kintampo districts.

  • Jaman South District
JAMAN SOUTH DISTRICT Copyright (c) 2014 Ghana Statistical Service ii PREFACE AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT No meaningful developmental activity can be undertaken without taking into account the characteristics of the population for whom the activity is targeted. The size of the population and its spatial distribution, growth and change over time, in addition to its socio-economic characteristics are all important in development planning. A population census is the most important source of data on the size, composition, growth and distribution of a country’s population at the national and sub-national levels. Data from the 2010 Population and Housing Census (PHC) will serve as reference for equitable distribution of national resources and government services, including the allocation of government funds among various regions, districts and other sub-national populations to education, health and other social services. The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) is delighted to provide data users, especially the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, with district-level analytical reports based on the 2010 PHC data to facilitate their planning and decision-making. The District Analytical Report for the Jaman South District is one of the 216 district census reports aimed at making data available to planners and decision makers at the district level. In addition to presenting the district profile, the report discusses the social and economic dimensions of demographic variables and their implications for policy formulation, planning and interventions. The conclusions and recommendations drawn from the district report are expected to serve as a basis for improving the quality of life of Ghanaians through evidence- based decision-making, monitoring and evaluation of developmental goals and intervention programmes.

This study examined the prospects of sustaining bee-keepers’ income to enhance poverty reduction and improve livelihoods in the Berekum Municipality in the Brong-Ahafo Region of Ghana. Questionnaires and interview schedule were the main research instruments used in gathering data. These were supplemented with personal observation. Questionnaires were administered to 51 bee-keepers, 11 honey traders and 4 inputs providers who are the major Beekeeping value chain actors in the Berekum Municipality. Cross tabulation, Mean, Line graphs, and Frequency tables were employed in the analysis of quantitative data using the Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS version 18) software and excel. A narrative analysis was adopted for the qualitative data collected. Descriptions and quotations were also used in analyzing qualitative data. A cost and benefit analysis was carried out to determine the profit obtained from honey trade, honey production, and provision of Beekeeping tools over a five year period in order to establish income sustainability.
