Bio: “See Through Trio offers the listener a refreshing mix of improvised interaction blended with beautiful, clever compositions (and clever titles). Music worth hearing in your mind’s ear.” (Rob Wallace, papercutrecords.com)

See Through Trio is composed of pianist Tania Gill, saxophonist Karen Ng, and bassist Pete Johnston. Formed in 2004, our primary musical influences are the free innovators of the early 1960s, especially Jimmy Giuffre, Carla Bley, and Ornette Coleman. The subsequent free improvisation scene that developed in Europe is also an important touchstone, as is the psychedelic and that emerged from the UK in the 1960s and 70s.

Each member of the group has played in many bands that play a wide range of musics, including: traditional jazz, math rock, folk, New Orleans-style party music, singer songwriters, big band swing, indie rock, country, and progressive rock, among others. All of these influences have space to percolate through our ensemble improvisations in See Through Trio. Throughout our performances and recordings the playful, deconstructionist spirit of jazz provides the foundation for our music.

Parallel Lights is See Through Trio’s fourth record, and the first with saxophonist Karen Ng, who joined the group in 2013. We had the great pleasure to work with Jean Martin as producer and engineer on this recording. Jean is a fixture on the Toronto music scene as a drummer, producer, and label boss of Barnyard Records, one of Canada's best-known labels for creative music. As a skilled improviser himself, Jean’s creative sensibilities matched perfectly with ours throughout the recording process. Recorded in March 2014 at Canterbury Studios in Toronto, the compositions on Parallel Lights feature extensive written material than our previous work, yet are a clear extension of the equal-voiced, contrapuntal compositions on our first three records: Our Own Devices (2007), Lines and Spaces (2009), and Near Northern Static (2012).
