AUSTRALIAN BOOK PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION BOOK DESIGN AWARDS

This year the judging took place in the fierce summer heat of . Our thanks

therefore go to Graeme Base, Gillie Gough and Gordon Hill for the energy, ent~usiasm and humour they brought to the long and gruelling task of judging the 250 titles entered by member publishers. To the donors of the award, we also extend our thanks for their generosity: Joyce Al'STRALIAN Nicholson ; Australian Consolidated Press and The Bulletin; Collins/ Angus & Robertson BOOK Publishers; Reader's Digest; The Book Printer; Ashton Scholastic; Griffin Press; Penguin Pl"BLISHERS Books ; Kevin Weldon and Weldon International; University of Press; ASSOCIATION and DW Thorpe. COMMITTEE REPORT Midland Typesetters and Impact Printing are also to be thanked for donating their services in the preparation and printing of this catalgoue. And, of course, our gratitude must go to Dimitrios Frangoulis for designing the catalogue. SUE DO OVAN, CONVE OR RICHARD EVERIST Our appreciation also goes to Lothian Books for lending us their boardroom for the judging HELEN LIGHTFOOT BOB SESSIONS and for being such understanding hosts. REBECCA KAISER Graeme Base Graeme Base is an author, illustrator and designer. After training at art school, he worked in advertising for two years before publishing his flrst book My Grandma Lived in Gooligulch. and Th e Eleventh Hour followed with both books becoming international bestsellers.

Gillie Gough Gillie Gough has been a bookseller for seven years. She is currently manager of Readings, Hawthorn and was previously a partner in Shrew Women's Bookshop, Fitzroy. Gillie is also a member of the Australian Feminist Book Fortnight Management Committee.

Gordon Hill Gordon Hill trained as a photographer. He established the Beaver Group of Graphic Art companies where for twenty years he was involved in commercial photography, art and design. Now, as a freelance designer, most of his time is taken up by primary educational book publishing, in particular, the mathematics and literacy programmes of Mimosa Publications. While aiJ the books shortlisted are worthy examples of the designer's craft, we were left with a feeling that there should have been something more from the books entered than the competent design we saw. We were waiting to be inspired and invigorated and generally this did not happen. We were particularly disappointed with the books entered for the Griffin Press Award. These are expensive books and we had hoped to see rich, perhaps even indulgent design. The most exciting books were in the illustrated children's book category.

With a few exceptions, designers did not exploit the opportunities offered by typography. Many of the typographical elements of the entered books were conservative. Designs that used interesting and refreshing typography were immediately seized upon. Having said this, the emergence of the sans serif face was particularly exciting. We encourage designers to look at typography more seriously, to recognise that it is a key element in good book design.

Al:STRALIAN We also looked for good examples of problem solving. We could imagine many of the BOOK designers of secondary and tertiary texts struggling to deal with a mass of diffuse and PCBLISHERS complex information. Many achieved admirably in presenting complicated text in an ASSOCIATION accessible and easily read form. This, afterall, must also be considered a major element of .JCDGES' good design. REPORT Judging of the DW Thorpe Award for promotional material was very difficult because of the range of material entered. We wondered how to compare the catalogue of a small publisher GRAEME BASE, to a direct mail flier or to the bigger budget promotion of a high profile book. What was GILLIE GOUGH AND GORDON HILL common to all the material entered for this category was that the designs were well targeted and that the tight budgets had obviously been used as a challenge by the designers. Ultimately, the winner of this category was chosen on the sheer originality and strength of design.

Overall, the books entered were competently designed. However, we hope that designers, and their publishers, will in the future take some more risks. We look forward to seeing exciting, invigorating and ground breaking design. Good design is not dependent on big budgets. Good design brings readers to a book and helps them stay there. The Lambent Flame () To Vane Lindesay in recognition of his outstanding and continued contribution to Australian book design and production

Vane Lindesay's graphic design career had its genesis during World War II when he was appointed senior artist on the Australian Army Education Service magazine Salt. After the war and three years further experience in England, he returned to Australia and to a staff position as head of the Argus newspaper art department. It was during this period of the early 1950s when, under the patronage and encouragement of the late Dr Andrew Fabinyi, the publishing director of FW Cheshire, Vane Lindesay was launched as a freelance designer into the exciting and flourishing Australian book publishing industry. He designed and sometimes illustrated a vast range of titles from Allan Marshall's novels and short story collections to academic texts on subjects such as immunology.

Vane Lindesay is also the author of five published books on Australian popular culture and has contributed essays published in Sweden, the United States and England, together with written entries to the Australian Encyclopaedia and the Australian Dictionary of Biography. His book design has featured in the Transfield Book Design Awards, and over the years on several occassions in the Australian Book Publishers Association's design awards. He received the Book of the Year design award for 1975-76 and in 1988 was presented with the The Bulletin Black and White Artists Silver Award for his contribution to Australian cartooning.
