SAFFRON FARMING IN LEH Context: In Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh Farmers and Producers Cooperative Limited have started experimenting with saffron farming in Leh. Ladakh is part of saffron farming experiment along with hill States of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. At present, saffron is farmed in Pulwama and Pampore areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Ladakh has similarities of climatic conditions with Iran and Afghanistan where saffron is grown. About Saffron: Saffron which is considered as nature’s precious wonder gift to mankind is in great demand for its medicinal, cosmetic and aromatic properties. It grows from a very small plant botanically known as Crocus Sativus. Its purple coloured flower is the only part mostly seen above the ground. The blossoms appear during late autumn (mid-October to early November) and present a very fascinating memorable sight in moonlight particularly on ‘Kartik Purnima’. The aromatic reddish stigmas of these flowers are harvested which form the most expensive part of the colourful spice called ‘Mogra’. The remaining stalks are also processed to get inferior grade of saffron called ‘Lacha’. Government of India is implementing the National Saffron Mission under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY). Objective: The Saffron National Mission is to improve the overall production of saffron, enhancing quality of saffron, enhancement of research and extension capability and develop appropriate system for organized marketing for the growers 3. GJ 357 d Context: NASA satellite uncovers ‘first nearby super-Earth’ named GJ 357 d About GJ 357 d: The super-Earth planet -- named GJ 357 d -- was discovered in early 2019 owing to NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), a mission designed to comb the heavens for exoplanets. Astronomers from the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands and the University of La Laguna, both in Spain, announced the discovery of the GJ 357 system in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. They showed that the distant solar system — with a diminutive M-type dwarf sun, about one-third the size of our own sun — harbours three planets, with one of those in that system’s habitable zone: GJ 357 d. With a thick atmosphere, the planet GJ 357 d is 22% larger than the Earth and could maintain liquid water on its surface like Earth. AN INITIATIVE BY VETRII IAS STUDY CIRCLE 4 | P a g e .

  • Machail Mata Yatra’ in J&K
Suspension of ‘Machail Mata Yatra’ in J&K Why in news? The ‘Machail Mata Yatra’ in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir was suspended recently due to security reasons. What is the Machail Mata Yatra’? The ‘Machail Mata Yatra’ is a 43-day-long journey in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir. Thousands of devotees from across the country visit the scenic Paddar valley, also famous for its sapphire mines, during the yatra. They also worship at the holy shrine of goddess Durga in Machail village of Kishtwar after trekking a 30-km hard route. What is the order? The yatra commenced on July 25, and was scheduled to end on September 5. It has now been suspended with immediate effect due to security reasons. Authorities have asked people not to start the yatra and those on the way to leave and get back. The move comes a day after the J&K government asked Amarnath Yatris and tourists to cut short their stay in the Valley and return as soon as possible. What are the security concerns? Kishtwar was declared terrorism-free over a decade ago. However, it was disturbed by the killing of state secretary of BJP Anil Parihar and his brother Ajeet Parihar in November 2018. This was followed by assassination of senior RSS leader Chanderkant Sharma and his security guard inside a health centre in April 2019. The recent announcement came close on the heels of an unexplained troop surge in the State, already one of the most militarised regions of the world. The decision was taken keeping in view the latest intelligence inputs of terror threats, with specific targeting of the Amarnath Yatra.
