LAMBORGHINI MIURA 50th ANNIVERSARY AT 2016 AMELIA ISLAND CONCOURS d'ELEGANCE Photos courtesy of Mr. Jerry Brubaker The 21st annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary Lamborghini Miura the car that changed the exotic car universe forever. The landmark Miura was introduced as a rolling chassis at the 1965 Turin Auto Salon. The new, mid-engine Lamborghini was a huge hit and remarkably, even without coachwork, orders were placed during the show. That vindicated the three men who conspired to create the Miura. Lamborghini engineers Bob Wallace, Gian Paolo Dallara and Paolo Stanzani worked secretly after hours to create the Miura. They had a tough sell to bring their clandestine mid-engine supercar project to life simply because the Miura concept was at odds with founder Ferruccio Lamborghini's original philosophy. But it worked. Lamborghini gave his engineers a free hand believing that the the Miura was radical and exotic enough that it might become a potent marketing tool even if it didn't sell. He was correct beyond his wildest dreams. Named for an especially ferocious strain of Spanish fighting bull, the Miura made its debut at the 1966 Geneva motor show. The advanced P400 (its model number: posteriori four-liter with its V12 engine mounted transversely) stole the show. When it was parked in front of the Casino in Monte Carlo during Grand Prix weekend alarm bells sounded from Stuttgart to Coventry and especially in Maranello and Modena. "The Miura rewrote the rules," said Bill Warner, founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. -

Star-Architekt Giampaolo Benedini entwirft den Firmensitz. Sein Auftrag: Eine Produktionsstätte zu bauen, die schön im Design und auf dem neuesten Stand der Technik ist, gleichzeitig so modern, avantgardistisch und einzigartig wie ein Bugatti- Fahrzeug. Dabei symbolisiert das blaue Gebäude der Entwicklungsabteilung mit dem Bugatti-Emblem und den großen weißen Lüftungsrohren das Herz der Fabrik. Benedini entwirft Hallen mit Radien an den Ecken. Die Wände leuchten im typischen Bugatti-Blau oder Blütenweiß. Das französische Erbe wird beim Bau und der Einrichtung offensiv gezeigt: Aus dem historischen Werk in Molsheim importiert Artioli eine antike Holztür, durch die einst Ettore Bugatti schritt und integriert sie in sein Gebäude. -

1969 Lamborghini Miura S Chassis number 3961 Ferruccio Lamborghini had hired two young and very talented engineers to create his cars and complement the marvellous V12 engine of Bizzarrini. With the early success of the 350 GT and 400 GT he now gave the promising skills of Giampaolo Dollara and Giampaolo Stanzani their head. Taking their inspiration from two-seater sports racing cars rather than from Grand Tourers, the two young men (Dallara at the time was just 28) created in essence a road-going race car. They took the initial innovative step in sitting the four-litre V12 Lamborghini 400 GT engine transversely mounted behind the driver. The chassis needed to be strong but light and to do this they made it out of bent welded sheet metal that had been drilled with holes. Ferruccio approved the project without a moment’s hesitation and the chassis was hurriedly completed to be exhibited at the October 1965 Turin Motor Show. All it needed now was a body. Nuccio Bertone, Head of the radical thinking Carrozzeria Bertone based in Turin, saw the concept and volunteered to build the body to sit on the revolutionary chassis. A wonderful relationship between Lamborghini and Bertone, and the Miura was born. Bertone turned to 26 year old Marcello Gandini, an interior designer, and his first project for the Carrozzeria was to interpret and fulfil his new boss’s vision. It was the clarity of thinking, unfettered by tradition, that led Gandini and Bertone to create the Miura November 1968 saw the arrival of the Miura S. -

Photography by Michael Ward his year is the 40th anniversary of the Miura. Well..., actually it isn’t. When it went on the stand at the 1965 Turin Show, the naked Miura chassis T was a bodyshell short of a car. No one had even been commissioned to design its clothes. Nevertheless, the order book was a blur of activity as deposits were laid down blind. At Geneva the following year, Lamborghini once again stole the Show but with the finished item – a P400 Miura. The body boasted Bertone badges but a 22-year-old Marcello Gandini working at Bertone took much of the credit. Frequently labelled the world’s most beautiful car, the Miura is certainly the jewel in the Lamborghini crown and the twinkle in the bull’s eye. About 760 Miuras were made but fewer than half exist. The Miura was the first time that the Lamborghini bull gored the Ferrari stallion. The list of celebrity Miura buyers was endless. While the aristocracy posed in their Miuras at Monaco, pop stars went on Miura-crashing frenzies. Currently unattainable to all but the rich, t’was not always thus; there was a time in the late 1970s and early 1980s when a tatty Miura was almost affordable but for me the icon quickly escaped into the financial stratosphere. Prices climbed, fell, hovered and soared, but always out of my league. -

Ferruccio Lamborghini's bold challenge to Ferrari had begun in 1964 with the 350GT but it was the arrival of the Miura - arguably the founder of the supercar class - that established Lamborghini as a major manufacturer of luxury sporting cars. Prior to the model's official debut at the 1966 Geneva Salon, Lamborghini cars were respected for their impressive mechanical specifications but they somehow lacked a distinctive persona. All this changed with the arrival of the Miura, named after Don duardo Miura, a famous breeder of fighting bulls. The Miura project first surfaced as a rolling chassis displayed at the 1965 Turin Motor Show but was not expected to become a production reality. Nevertheless, by the time of the Geneva Salon the following year, the first completed car was ready for unveiling to an awe-struck press and public.
