We studied the freshwater fish fauna of Rivers of Southern Western Ghats for a period of three years 14 from 2010 to 2013. We recorded 64 species belonging to 6 orders, 14 families and 31 genera. Alteration in the 15 micro and macro habitats in the system severely affects the aquatic life especially fishes and also complicates the 16 fish taxonomy. In the present study a total of 31 sites of six river systems of Southern Western Ghats were studied 17 in which a total of 64 species belonging to 6 orders, 14 families and 31 genera were recorded. Among the 64 18 species Cyprinidae was the dominant family with 3 families 18 genus and 49 species (76.6%) compared to other 19 order and families, further the data analyses suggested that species belonging to the order Cypriniformes were 20 found to be the dominant species in the locations considered in the present survey. Interestingly, among the 31 21 sites Thunakadavu stream, Gulithuraipatti, Athirappalli, Naduthotam, Nadathittu, Mullaithodu, Thonanthikla, 22 Noolpuzha and Sinnaru exhibited high variations in species abundance and as well species richness. Fifteen out 23 of the 64 fish species endangered to the Western Ghats. -

Department of Zoology, Government College University, Lahore Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Pakistan has introduced several alien exotic fish species e.g. grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), bighead carp, (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), silver carp, (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), gold fish (Carassius auratus), and three species of tilapia (Oreochromis aureus, Oreochromis mossambicus, Oreochromis niloticus) in warm waters along with two trout species: the rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss) and the brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) in colder regions for specific purposes like sport fishing, yield enhancement and biological control of aquatic weeds and mosquitoes. The exotic species are becoming invasive in the freshwater biomes of the Punjab and other provinces of Pakistan by reason of their potent reproductive potential and feeding competitions with the native freshwater fish fauna. Resultantly the native fish species viz; Channa marulius, Wallago attu, Rita rita, Sperata sarwari, Gibelion catla, Cirrhinus mrigala and Labeo rohita, which are of economic value are under threat. B.A. 6th Semester Unit IV Geography of Jammu and Kashmir Introduction The state of Jammu and Kashmir constitutes northern most extremity of India and is situated between 32o 17′ to 36o 58′ north latitude and 37o 26′ to 80o 30′ east longitude. It falls in the great northwestern complex of the Himalayan Ranges with marked relief variation, snow- capped summits, antecedent drainage, complex geological structure and rich temperate flora and fauna. The state is 640 km in length from north to south and 480 km from east to west. It consists of the territories of Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh and Gilgit and is divided among three Asian sovereign states of India, Pakistan and China. The total area of the State is 222,236 km2 comprising 6.93 per cent of the total area of the Indian territory including 78,114 km2 under the occupation of Pakistan and 42,685 km2 under China. The cultural landscape of the state represents a zone of convergence and diffusion of mainly three religio-cultural realms namely Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists. The population of Hindus is predominant in Jammu division, Muslims are in majority in Kashmir division while Buddhists are in majority in Ladakh division. Jammu is the winter capital while Srinagar is the summer capital of the state for a period of six months each. The state constitutes 6.76 percent share of India's total geographical area and 41.83 per cent share of Indian Himalayan Region (Nandy, et al. 2001). It ranks 6th in area and 17th in population among states and union territories of India while it is the most populated state of Indian Himalayan Region constituting 25.33 per cent of its total population. -

ABSTRACT Present investigation reveals the existing fish fauna and their distribution pattern in the Tinau River, Western Nepal. A total of 35 species belonging to 25 genera, 12 families and 5 orders are recorded. Among collected fish species, Cyprinidae family was dominant constituting 81.73% of the total, followed by Cobitidae constituting 11.24% of the total collection. Physico-chemical and biological parameters of water were analysed to determine distribution, abundance and frequency of ichthyofauna. Chemical nature of water was found to be suitable with well-oxygenated and slightly alkaline pH range. -

Some interesting fish species reported from this river are Barilus shacra, Garra annandalei, Psilorhynchoides pseudecheneis, Badis badis, Olyra longicoudata, Tor putitora, Labeo dero and Anguilla bengalensis . In the present study, the structure and morphometrics of alimentary canal of Rasborine fishes (11 species belonging to 8 genera) are described in relation to their food and feeding habits. The general pattern of alimentary canal was found to be similar but according to their feeding habit some morphological features was showing dissimilarity. The pattern and length of alimentary canal indicated inter and intraspecific variations. The stomach content analysis revealed that Amblypharyngodon mola , Aspidoparia morar, Barilius bendelisis, Esomus danricus mainly depended on vegetable matter whereas Barilius barila Hamilton, Barilius barna Hamilton, Barilius vagra Hamilton, Branchydanio rerio , Danio devario Hamilton, Raiamas bola, Rasbora (Rasbora ) daniconius daniconius depended on animal matter. It has been observed that the rasborine fishes are predominantly larvivorous i.e. feeding on insect larvae except for Raiamas which is a carnivore. Fish Diversity of Haryana and Its Conservation Status

E-mail: [email protected] Received: September 24, 2015; Revised received: April 7, 2016; Accepted: June 5, 2016 Abstract: The present study on fish biodiversity of Haryana state was carried out during 2011 to 2014. A total number of 59 fish species inhabits the freshwaters of this state. Maximum number of fish species belonged to the order Cypriniformes (35) followed by the order Siluriformes (12) and Perciformes (8). The orders Beloniformes, Clupeiformes, Osteoglossiformes and Synbranchiformes were represented by only one species each. Out of 59 fish species, 2 are endangered, 11 vulnerable, 28 have lower risk of threat, 8 exotic and 4 fish species have lower risk least concern. The conservation status of six fish species has not been evaluated so far, hence they cannot be included in any of the IUCN categories at this moment. Family Cyprinidae alone contributed 32 fish species followed by Bagridae family. Fish species Parapsilorhynchus discophorus was observed for the first time in Haryana waters. This species is the native of Kaveri river basin, the occurrence of this species in river Yamuna may be attributed to some religious activity of people. A decline in fish diversity has been recorded from 82 species in 2004 to 59 species in the present study in the year 2014. -
