Actually, a great part of it is about a lack of water. I have learned a couple of valuable lessons over the past decade: don't believe everything you hear, and there are always two sides to every story. These lessons were certainly proven true after a week-long vacation to Oak Shores at Lake Nacimiento with a family from Pacific Grove, which has become somewhat of a summer tradition. We paid for this home probably seven months ago, and it was at the end of July when, much to our chagrin, we heard (they in P.G. and we in King City) that the lake was dried up. I can tell you first-hand this rumor is false. The lake, according to a year-round resident Leslie of Oak Shores, hasn't been dry since the drought of 1990. She told us rumors have been escalating for years, because the lake is - and always has been - an agricultural reservoir and water is let out. The residents of Monterey County, she said, will vote on this issue in November. The lake is filled by rainwater only, and Monterey County uses the water to help keep the saltwater from intruding into the Salinas Valley. Adding to the problem is the lack of rain this past year. A year ago, 16 inches of the precious stuff was measured at Lake Nacimiento.

Local units are responsible for completing a “Scooper Water Body Coordination Worksheet” (appendix B) for each body of water that may be used for water- scooping operations. The Process Upon receiving a dispatch to a wildfire, the dispatcher will determine the closest two bodies of water to the incident. The primary body of water contacts will be notified if required; if the AWSA has been dispatched to a wildfire, request confirmation of permission for use of the body of water. The final decision regarding safe utilization of a body of water will rest with the Water Scooper Pilot-in-command. The authorities for the body of water used will be notified when scooping operations cease.     GREATER MONTEREY COUNTY INTEGRATED REGIONAL WATER MANAGEMENT PLAN Region Description Section B: Greater Monterey County Region Description B.1 REGIONAL BOUNDARY B.1.1 Description of Greater Monterey County IRWM Regional Boundary and its Relation to Neighboring Regions The Greater Monterey County Integrated Regional Water Management (IRWM) region includes the entirety of Monterey County exclusive of the Pajaro River Watershed IRWM region and the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel Bay, and South Monterey Bay IRWM region established under Proposition 50. The Greater Monterey County IRWM region also includes a small portion of San Benito County where the Salinas River watershed extends outside of Monterey County. Generally, the region includes the entire Salinas River watershed north of the San Luis Obispo County line, all of the Gabilan and Bolsa Nueva watersheds in the northern part of the county, and all of the coastal watersheds of the Big Sur coastal region within Monterey County. Areas within Monterey County that are not represented in this IRWM Plan (but that are represented in other IRWM Plans) include: the Pajaro River watershed, represented in the Pajaro River Watershed IRWM Plan; and the Carmel River watershed, the San Jose Creek watershed, areas overlying the Seaside Groundwater Basin, and all areas within the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District jurisdictional boundary (including the Monterey Peninsula cities of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Del Rey Oaks, Pacific Grove, Monterey, Sand City, and Seaside), which are represented in the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel Bay, and South Monterey Bay IRWM Plan. The Greater Monterey County IRWM region lies entirely within the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) district and is part of the IRWM Central Coast Funding Area.

Specifically, Hunt & Associates was tasked with reviewing existing information on steelhead habitat conditions, assessing the magnitude and extent of threats to steelhead and their habitats, and developing recovery actions across these two Steelhead Recovery Planning Areas. This document summarizes the results of an assessment of threats and sources of threats to steelhead in the South-Central California Coast Steelhead Recovery Planning Area, which includes coastal steelhead populations from the Pajaro River watershed of Monterey County southward to the Arroyo Grande Creek watershed in southern San Luis Obispo County, California. Recovery action matrices for each watershed in both Steelhead Recovery Planning Areas are provided in separate documents. Methods.
