Vestry Corner Dear St. George’s Family: Hello all! It feels as if we just celebrated Easter and blessed Kevin and his family as he began his sabbatical. But with the end of the school year behind us and Pentecost just around the corner, it feels like summer is officially here! With many families planning vacations for the hot days ahead, there are also things to look forward to here at St. George’s as we head into June. We will be celebrating Pentecost on Sunday, June 9th. The Day of Pentecost recalls the coming of the Holy Spirit to the first disciples of Jesus, empowering them to preach the gospel to people from many different places, backgrounds, and cultures. It is always one of my favorite services. To enhance our Pentecost celebration this year, Mary Stewart Miller and Carolyn Moreau will be telling us about their recent trip to Guatemala and the work that HELPS International is doing at a potluck lunch after the 10:30 service (see the article on page 3). Please plan to join the fun, and don’t forget to wear your red! Another event to add to your June calendar is the ordination of our deacon intern, Jim Enelow (see the article on page 5). We have been blessed to have him serving with us, and his preparations are now reaching fruition. Jim’s ordination to the Sacred Order of Deacons will take place on Saturday, June 22nd, at 10:00 am, at Christ Church Cathedral in Houston, with a reception to follow. All St. George’s parishioners are invited to attend. Please keep Jim in your prayers as he takes this next step in his vocation. After his ordination, Jim will be returning to us as our parish deacon! As always, you can reach out to the Vestry Person of the Day any Sunday if you have any questions or needs. Also, please feel free to use the contact information below as needed. May you be blessed this month and always,

Vestry Member

July Banner Deadline The deadline for news for the July issue of The Banner is Wednesday, June 26th. Please email news and articles you would like included in the next issue to [email protected].

Pentecost A Global Celebration of Gifts and Community One of the three principal feast days in the Church Year (along with Christmas and Easter), Pentecost is the 50th day of the Easter season and marks the occasion on which we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit to the first disciples of Jesus. On Pentecost, we also celebrate the fruits of the Spirit in each of us and the sharing of our gifts with our community and the world. Pentecost is often called the birthday of the Church. Join us on the Day of Pentecost, Sunday, June 9th, as we celebrate the presence of the Holy Spirit among us. At both services, white paper doves, suspended by a red cord and identified with a fruit of the Spirit from Galatians 5:22-23, will be available for worshipers to take and use as they wish. At the 10:30 service, we will join together in reading the gospel in languages from around the globe. It is traditional to wear red on Pentecost, so that the congregation itself becomes a symbol of the flames of the Holy Spirit. After the 10:30 service, we’ll continue our Pentecost celebration in Kleberg Hall with a presentation by Mary Stewart Miller and Carolyn Moreau about their recent mission trip to Guatemala and the work that HELPS International is doing there. Church events always go better with food, so Outreach and the Vestry are sponsoring a “regional specialties” lunch to enhance the celebration. Please plan to join the fun and bring an appropriate Guatemalan or Central American dish. (If you’re not sure what to bring, feel free to fall back on TexMex!) For more information, contact Alice Nelson ([email protected]) or Sarah Campbell ([email protected]). We hope to see you there!

Wednesday Weavings St. George’s adult discussion group meets the first and third Wednesdays of each month in different locations. We share a simple meal (unless otherwise noted), a brief evening worship service of Compline, and discussion on a selected reading for the evening. On June 5th, we will gather from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the home of Sarah Campbell. On June 19th, we will have a modified schedule (no meal), from 7:00 to 8:00 pm, at Parsons House, the home of Ralph Hausser. The group is currently reading The Social Justice Bible Challenge, published by Forward Movement Publications. Each reading stands on its own, so you can join the group anytime and never fall behind! More information will be provided in the Sunday Banner before each gathering. Contact Frances Rickard ([email protected]) with any questions or to let us know you’re coming. We hope you’ll give Wednesday Weavings a try this month!

Women’s Book Group Please join us for our next meeting on Saturday, June 8th, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, at the home of Sarah Campbell. We will discuss A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by Betty Smith. All St. George’s women are welcome to attend; this group is open and welcoming of all. We hope you can join us for interesting conversation, delicious snacks, and our book discussion. Please contact Sandra Villalaz at [email protected] or 512-762-8349 with any questions, or if you want to join the fun. Happy reading!

Yellow Envelope Drive A huge THANK YOU and grateful appreciation to the generous hearts of St. George’s from the Outreach Committee. Our yellow envelope drive around Mother’s Day raised $1806 for our projects! These funds will be used for the food bank account at St. George’s Court and for the emergency food supplies at Any Baby Can. It is a joy to work with you, and do let us know if you have questions. Consecration of Bishop-Elect Kai Ryan The Rev. Kai Ryan, elected to be the Diocese of Texas’s next Bishop Suffragan, will be consecrated a bishop on Saturday, June 1st, at 11:00 am, at Westover Hills Church of Christ (8332 Mesa Drive), with a reception to follow at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church (8134 Mesa Drive). After her consecration, although she will be a bishop for the entire diocese (and larger church) and will have duties throughout the diocese, she will be based in Austin and will have oversight of congregations in Austin and the western region of the diocese, and we look forward to working closely with her. A consecration Eucharist is filled with symbolism and long-standing traditions. The most significant moment in the service is the laying on of hands by other present, when the new bishop becomes a part of apostolic succession. Apostolic succession is the belief that bishops are the successors to Jesus’ first apostles and that the authority of a bishop is derived from the apostles by an unbroken succession in the ministry. This authority is specifically derived through the laying on of hands for the ordination of bishops. Essentially, the tradition is that the apostles laid hands upon and consecrated bishops, who then consecrated new bishops, and so forth to today. The consecration is a time of celebration for the new ministry of a person called to serve God and God’s Church as a bishop. It also is a time of celebration and joy for a diocese, as the people welcome their new bishop.

Jim Enelow’s Ordination For the past year, we have been blessed to have Jim Enelow serving with us as he prepares for his ordination to the vocational diaconate (meaning he feels called to permanently be a deacon as his vocation, rather than as one step in the process of ordination to the priesthood). His preparations are now reaching fruition, and his ordination to the Sacred Order of Deacons will take place on Saturday, June 22nd, at 10:00 am, at Christ Church Cathedral in Houston, with a reception to follow. All St. George’s parishioners are invited to attend. Whether or not you can attend his ordination, please keep Jim in your prayers as he takes this next step in his vocation. After his ordination and a well-deserved break, with the consent of the bishop, Jim will be returning to us as our parish deacon.

Update on the School’s Use of Kleberg Hall

As you know, St. George’s Episcopal School has been using Kleberg Hall for classrooms until a new classroom building is finished. The permitting process with the city has been very difficult and is taking much longer than expected. In addition to long periods of silence from the city, several additional unexpected delays have resulted from various outside forces: we needed to locate an old archived site plan; the city’s easement was inaccurately recorded and did not identify existing pipes, requiring additional surveying and plumbing work; and releases of liens for two previous property loans had not been filed with the county. Jerri Thompson, the Head of School, has spent countless hours dealing with contractors and the city. The school has hired a civil engineer, who has been helping with the process and submitted the required “TAP” plan to the city several weeks ago. We hope that it will be approved shortly and the building permit issued fairly soon. The school will have Kleberg Hall repainted and new flooring installed when they move from there into the new building. We think it is realistic to expect the school to be in the new building in October or November and have this work in Kleberg completed in November or December. Until we have the building permit in hand, however, these estimates are subject to revision. The vestry and the school board considered moving the classrooms out of Kleberg Hall before the start of the new school year. But during the school board’s recent work on its budget, it became painfully obvious that losing two classrooms would create serious financial constraints for the school and result in teacher (and potentially staff) lay-offs. Understanding the inconveniences to the St. George’s congregation caused by the school’s temporary use of Kleberg, the school offered to pay rent ($5,000/month) to the Church starting in September. The vestry has agreed with this arrangement and voted to allow the school to continue its use of Kleberg for the classrooms until the new building is completed. The vestry has not yet decided on a specific use for the funds. We understand that the school’s continued use of Kleberg Hall for classrooms has caused some discomfort, but the vestry wants to continue our strong support of the school, which is such an important mission and such a big part of St. George’s. We hope that you, too, will continue to support this temporary arrangement. We will keep you updated as the project develops; please feel free to reach out to me at 512-415-7721 (cell) or [email protected] with any questions. Peace, Melissa Brackin Senior Warden

KidsWord/YouthWord is Out for Summer

Kids Stay in Church If you are in church on Sundays, you’ll want to know that this summer we are doing something different with kids at St. George’s. Instead of bringing children and youth out of the worship service for their own liturgy of the Word, we are staying in church with our families, beginning on Pentecost Sunday, June 9th. Not only will this change give the teachers a summer break, but we also hope it gives kids a special opportunity to experience worship in a different way.

Kids’ Art in the Pews You may have heard or seen that in many other churches in our diocese kids stay in the service, maybe leaving only for the sermon. When kids stay in the service they can free-draw on a blank paper or color a drawing that relates to the lectionary stories. This kind of quiet participation brings children into a listening place, often subliminal. They can feel the closeness of family, the safety of community. You never know how the Spirit of the Lord may surround them. To facilitate this time and to extend hospitality to those who may wish they were on the playground (!), we commend to you the “Sunday Paper.” Just ask an usher for the paper and crayons. (Blank paper is available too.) And we commend to you the “note to parents” on the back. You may not always agree – we don’t always – but it gives us something to think about, whether or not we pass it on. Or kids may draw free-style. If you have the opportunity to ask about those drawings you may hear some amazing stories!

Kids Work with Parents How else may children participate in church? If you are involved in a ministry, in the worship service or outside, please consider inviting your kids to work with you. Kids can help usher, help with Altar Guild. They can shadow you as you acolyte, help collect things for projects. Apprenticing is a great way to learn. Kids help with sew-ins and assembling Christopher House baskets. What more can they do? We know that children like to help and they like to do work that is real.

KidsWord resumes in August We know you have other, more, ideas. Would you check them out? Then, at the end of summer vacation in August, we can get together and share those ideas. We’ll start KidsWord again and children’s sermons in church will be scheduled for 3rd Sundays. Until then, if you have any pressing ideas about kids in church, please contact Jan Phillips at [email protected].

Happy Summer!

Liturgical Furnishings Update We are delighted to announce that we have raised the funds needed to design and fabricate the additional liturgical furnishings to complement our baptismal font, candle holders, and missal stand. Through the generosity of many parishioners, as well as others who have given to our memorial fund in recent years, nearly $10,000 was raised to design and fabricate a new flower stand, torches, baptism table, and Advent wreath stand. The Vestry has authorized the use of the funds for this purpose, and the required deposits have been sent to the artist we are working with in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Fabrication of the flower stand and torches is underway, with the baptism table and Advent wreath stand soon to follow. We will keep you posted as we learn of the progress and have an estimated completion date. Thank you again to all who made this possible. Contact John Rickard ([email protected]) if you have questions or would like additional information.

Greg Garrett’s Book Release Join Greg Garrett as he discusses a new volume of Church Publishing Inc.’s “In Conversation” series, written with former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams. In a three-day conversation that took place in Cambridge, England, they talked about friendship, the Church, the gift of great stories, the importance of Shakespeare, the art of writing poetry and fiction, the preaching event, engaging popular culture, the relationship between faith and politics, the practice of prayer, and the necessity of sacred community, modeling for us in the process both the vanishing art of conversation and an active engagement with faith, culture, and real life. A book launch Celebration and Conversation with Greg Garrett will take place at BookPeople (603 North Lamar Boulevard), on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at 5:00 pm. KUT’s Jennifer Stayton will host the conversation. Refreshments will be served, and books will be available for purchase and signing. Visit BookPeople’s Events page for more information.

Flower Donation Calendar

Have you noticed that recent bulletins have not always included a notice in the bulletin about who donated flowers for that week? That’s because the donation calendar still has many empty weeks! Even though we’re mid-way through the year, you can still sign up to give altar flowers to remember or honor an important person or event in your life. You can sign up to give flowers in honor of a family member’s birthday, in celebration of an anniversary, or in memory of loved one. The donation calendar is hanging on the bulletin board inside the north entrance of the church. To donate flowers, please clearly print your name and your dedication on the calendar, next to the week of your choice. (To be sure that your donation is listed in the bulletin, please sign up at least two weeks in advance.) A donation of $35 is requested. You can make your donation by check or electronically through our online giving program. Make checks made payable to St. George’s and note on the memo line that the check is for altar flowers/candles. To give electronically, use the Give + Church app on your mobile device, or click the “DONATE” button on the home page of our website (www.sgchurch.org).

News from the School

Our school year has come to a close, and the excitement of summer is upon us. We have many fun activities planned this summer, including a foam party, dinosaur digs, bounce castles, trackless train rides, splash days, and more. We are pleased to offer summer camp to families outside of our immediate community and bring in families who have never been on our campus before, providing them with a first impression and experience of St. George’s that we strive to make positive.

We will also showcase our playgrounds this July with teachers and directors from the Greater Austin and South Texas area. Each July, Hyde Park Baptist hosts a large annual conference for early childhood educators. The executive director of the conference is a professional friend of School Director Jerri Thompson, and has seen the school’s work on creating an outdoor environment for children to learn, grow, and develop. We will host a conference session from our playground. Teachers and directors will come to see how not only to create this environment, but also how to observe children’s growth and development while using a natural outdoor environment. We hope to inspire and influence other early childhood programs to embrace this new concept in institutional learning – a school that won’t feel like an institution, but a place where children and families can come together to raise children in a homey environment.
