Nachi no Dengaku is the performing art dedicated to the gods ofKumano on the occasion of the festival on July 14th every year, and it has been preserved and handed down since 600 years ago. Dengaku literally means "farmers' dance" and it is the performing art dedicated for the repose of deities at the time of rituals to wish for an abundant harvest of nce crops. In order to carry on this significant form of art to future generations eternally, the Kumano Nachi Taisya has engaged in the transmission of the skills and the training of successors together with the Association for the Preservation of Nachi Dengaku, and it has also actively financed the purchase and the maintenance ofits costumes and instruments and the cost ofperfonnances inside and outside the community. The shrine and its neighboring areas were heavily damaged by typhoon in , September 2011, however, we have never daunted by the disaster and committed ourselves to strengthening the support to the Association for the Preservation of Nachi Dengaku aiming at the eternal transmission ofthe beliefto Nachi-san and Ndchi no Dengaku. Nachi no Dengaku is the performing art dedicated to the gods of Kumano and it has been handed down for about 600 years together with the belief to Nachi-san which has its origin in the nature worship. The efforts of the Kumano Nachi Taisya and the local people made it possible to continuously preserve the form of the dance of Nachi no Dengaku, which has the longer history than performing arts such as Noh and Kabuki. Wakayama Prefecture designated "Nachi no Himatsuri" (the Fire Festival of Nachi) including Nachi no Dengaku as Intangible Folk Cultural Property in August 1960 and engaged in its protection. In addition, we have been offering supports in video recording of performances, maintaining its costumes and instruments and organizing the opportunities ofperformances. The Kumano Nachi Taisya, to which Nachi no Dengaku is dedicated, is one of Kumano Sanzan (Three Grand Shrines ofKumano), the component of the UNESCO WorId Heritage Site "the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range". We are, therefore, aiming at conservation and utilization ofthe area through the combined efforts ofthe government and the private sectors. From the aspect of the preservation of cultural properties, Wakayama Prefectural Government continues to be engaged in the preservation of Nachi no Dengaku through fostering the successors, exhibiting resources at museum facilities and ensuring the opportunities of the performance inside and outside the prefecture in cooperation with related organizations. The inscription of Nachi no Dengaku on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity would surely bring pride to the Kumano Taisya and the local people, and would also serve as important driving forces ofthe activities for the accurate transmission ofthe precious intangible culture to future generations. Introduction On November 17, 2014, the news that the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) added the Pacific Bluefin tuna (PBF) to its Red List of Threatened Species as “Vulnerable,” which meant that it was threatened with extinction, made headlines and received substantial TV coverage around Japan. After citing the IUCN’s comment that the species was extensively targeted by the fishing industry for the predominant sushi and sashimi markets in Asia, Mainichi Shimbun, one of the major newspapers in Japan, reported that the population was estimated to have declined by 19 to 33% over the past 22 years1. Nihon Keizai Shimbun, a leading Japanese economic newspaper, referring to the fact that the American eel was also added to the List as “Endangered,” pointed out that
