James Thull Collecting Yellowstone 2019 David E. Folsom Papers, 1869-1904

● Folsom was part of Charles W. Cook and William Peterson’s 1869 expedition to explore what would later become Yellowstone National Park ● The collection contains: ○ An original manuscript draft of the exploration ○ Two typewritten versions of the original manuscript draft ○ A campaign brochure

○ Letters from Folsom, Hiram M. Chittenden, and George S. Anderson ○ Thomas Folsom’s will ○ A photograph of Jim Bridger

● W. W. (William Wallace) Wylie owned and operated several Wylie Way Stations, fixed camps, within Yellowstone National Park ● Three collections within our archive contain materials pertaining to Wylie ○ W. W. Wylie Autobiography, 1926 ○ Letters to Mary Wylie, 1898 ○ Wylie Permanent Camping Co. Yellowstone Lake Tourist Register, 1904- 1900 ● Items within the collections include: ○ An autobiography describing the origins and development of his permanent tent camps known as Wylie Way Stations ○ Letters discussing the efforts to renew his concessionaire's license ○ A tourist register containing signatures of guests

● Led the first systematic exploration of Yellowstone National Park in the early 1870s ● The collection contains: ○ A handwritten exploration journal based off of field notes

Some of our manuscript collections that deal with the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem ● Mike Clark Papers, 1972-2017 ○ Documents created or collected by an environmental and social activist involved with organizations that include the Greater Yellowstone Coalition, Greenpeace U.S., Trout Unlimited, Yellowstone Heritage, Friends of the Earth U.S., Northern Lights Institute, Environmental Policy Institute, and the Highland Center. ● Rick Reese ○ Documents creatd or collected by founding president of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition and relate to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Manuscript collections that deal with the Angling and Fish in the Yellowstone Ecosystem ● Bob Jacklin papers, 1997-2014 ○ The Bob Jacklin Papers includes catalogs, clippings, poetry, article manuscripts, as well as published articles. Topics include , fly tying, fly rods, and fisheries conservation. Locations discussed include West Yellowstone, ; Big Sky, Montana; Livingston, Montana; Yellowstone National Park, the Yellowstone River, Madison River, Henrys Fork, the , and the . ● Craig Mathews Papers, 1961-2016 ○ The Craig Mathews papers consist of correspondence, financial and legal documents, manuscript material, printed material, photographs, other media, and memorabilia. Materials include: letters from prominent individuals such as President Jimmy Carter, NBC correspondent Tom Brokaw, Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, and fly fishing legend Lefty Kreh, various manuscript material pertaining to Mathews' work as an author, and journals and day books in which he recorded his day to day activities as well as his experiences fishing in Montana and around the world. James Thull Collecting Yellowstone 2019 Undergraduate Capstone Project

● Susan Hunter, mother-in-law to Yellowstone explorer Lieutenant Gustavus C. Doane, penned her memories in a reminiscence that can be found in the Mary Hunter Doan Papers, 1860-1952. In Susan’s reminiscence she: ○ Documented the Hunter family’s trip over the Bozeman Trail in 1864 ○ Discussed the family’s settlement at Virginia City, Helena, Diamond City, Bozeman, and Hunter’s Hot Springs ○ Talked about incidents of pioneer life and encounters with Native Americans identified as Crow or Sioux ● Former student employee and MSU graduate transcribed the handwritten account and utilized Hunter’s reminiscence as the basis for his undergraduate capstone project.

● Henry F. Keyes, Harvard student on an expedition sponsored by the Harvard Summer School of Geology spent the summer of 1899 hiking southwestern Montana into Yellowstone National Park. Keyes documented his expedition through a travel diary and photographs found in Collection 2577. ● Charles S. Hoff, a resident traveled with his brother’s family through Yellowstone National Park in 1908. His account can be found in Collection 2634. ● Former student employee and MSU graduate created an interactive map that displays both Keyes’ and Hoff’s journey’s through the park. ○ The journey’s can be viewed together or separately. ○ Snippets from each journey can be viewed by clicking the interactive bubbles ○ Period photographs from the Keyes journey as well as modern day snapshots of the same locations can be viewed ○ Timeline providing a brief overview of the park’s history and where Keyes and Hoff fit within it This project can be found at: http://arc.lib.montana.edu/yellowstone-accounts/

Our Angling Oral History Project collects, preserves, and disseminates the histories, opinions, and stories of politicians, artists, guides, authors, and anglers from all walks of life. Interviews are freely available and searchable to anyone online through our MSU created database.
