Peace & Conflict Review Volume 11, Issue 1 ISSN: 1659-3995 Human Security and Gender: Female Suicide Bombers in Palestine and Chechnya Katerina Standish Abstract Women in Chechnya and Palestine do not become suicide bombers because they are Muslim. Women in Chechnya and Palestine become suicide bombers because human security levels decrease during long-term conflict and allow rogue collectives to gain power in the absence of authority. This research explores how the experience of female suicide bombing is constructed as a response to foreign occupation, how gender and religion are secondary concerns to supporters of violent resistance, and how the history of human insecurity in Chechnya and Palestine has resulted in an ‘economy of conflict’ that has little stake in peace. Women in Chechnya and Palestine do not become suicide bombers because they are Muslim. They do not sacrifice themselves for the chance to kill others because they are psychologically unsound or suicidal (Stern, 2003). They are not anarchists attempting to upset the balance of power (Gambone, 1996) or fascists involved in a devotional type of cultural patriotism (Berlet, 1992). They are not involved in what Antonio Gramsci called “worship as opposition” where communal violence leads the religious to a political goal (Beiner, 2005) and they are not fanatics, engaged in violence because they are disdainful of other groups (Taylor, 1994.) Women in Chechnya and Palestine are at risk of becoming suicide bombers because human security levels decrease during long-term conflict and allow rogue collectives to gain power in the absence of authority. Left without support, the populations of Chechnya and Palestine have no choice but to gravitate to organizations that supply and sustain basic needs when social infrastructures cease to function during deadly conflict. -

In Qutb’s view, the establishment of a society in which Islamic teachings could be properly applied, was inevitable. Some distinctive characteristics that made Zilal so special are also discussed. Introduction This paper deals with Sayyid Qutb‟s approaches in Zilal and how they resulted in conflicting opinions between the author and other Mufassirun on certain issues mentioned in the Qur‟an. Qutb‟s interpretation of the Qur‟an began with the conviction that the Qur‟an was the true guidance for all human beings and thus the only valid source to direct their affairs. This belief emerged only after his progress through several stages of his career coupled with the strong influence of the current environment surrounding the Egyptian society of his time. -

The question often asked is as to whether their involvement is induced or free-willed. The concept of consent is on different layers and one would imagine the extent of consent given before they become members of the sect or culprits. The different ways women have been used to perpetrate the activities of Boko Haram ranges from threats to abuse, Indoctrination to hypnotism and many others. Due to the subtle and unsuspecting nature of women, they form a good strategy for members of the sect. However, their involvement is not evidence against them as they face situations that almost deny them the opportunity to choose whether or not to subscribe to the forceful approach used by Boko Haram insurgents!. The Changing Roles of Women in Violent Islamist Groups Devorah Margolin Devorah Margolin is a Senior Research Analyst at Combating Jihadist Terrorism in the UK (CoJiT-UK), a Research Fellow at the Centre for Policy Studies and a PhD Candidate in the Department of War Studies, King’s College London. Her PhD focuses on gender in relation to violent Islamist organizations. Devorah has published in Studies in Conflict & Terrorism and CTC Sentinel, written for Newsweek and Haaretz, and is a contributor to the BBC. Prior to attending King’s College London, Devorah was a Researcher at the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism (ICT) and served as the ICT Internship Coordinator. Additionally, she has served as an Associate Editor on the ICT Working Paper Series editorial board and as Senior Editor of Strife Journal in the Department of War Studies, King’s College London. Introduction An increased focus on the participation of women in violent Islamism1 has not ended misconceptions plaguing Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) policies2 and questions remain about the threat posed by women associated with violent Islamist groups.3 Ill-informed perceptions of women’s contributions to these movements can have serious ramifications, including deferential treatment in courts, insufficient intervention programming, and failure to disrupt the next wave of women involved in violent-Islamist inspired activity. While it is important to understand the motivations of women participating in violent Islamist movements, it is also critical to recognize the ideology of the organizations they join. A better comprehension of this phenomenon helps policymakers and practitioners anticipate new and evolving threats concerning women in violent extremism. -

MENU Policy Analysis / PolicyWatch 323 The Saudi Fatwa against Suicide Terrorism May 2, 2001 Brief Analysis n April 21, the grand mufti of Saudi Arabia, Shaykh Abd al-Aziz bin Abdallah Aal al-Shaykh, said that Islam O forbids suicide terrorist attacks. This has raised a storm of criticism from supporters of the Palestinian intifada against Israel. However, the mufti may have been thinking more about Osama bin Laden than recent Palestinian actions. Background Shaykh Abd al-Aziz is head of the Saudi commission of senior Islamic scholars and the supreme Islamic authority in the kingdom. In an interview with the London-based and Saudi-owned newspaperal-Sharq al-Awsat, Shaykh Abd al-Aziz was asked for his view on several issues related to contemporary Islamist terrorism, such as the hijacking of airplanes, terrorism against security personnel, and suicide operations. In regard to the latter, he answered categorically: "What you call suicide bombings in my view are illegitimate and have nothing to do with jihad in the cause of God. I am afraid it is another form of killing oneself." His reply was not formally an official Islamic ruling (fatwa), but since such rulings are answers by high religious authorities to questions, his interview was received in the Arab world as if he had issued a fatwa. Shaykh Abd al-Aziz is quite new in his position; he assumed his office last year following the death of Shaykh Abd al-Aziz Bin Baz. The latter individual was a powerful authority — not only in Saudi Arabia, but also throughout the Muslim world. -

Boko Haram Insurgency and the Spectre of Female Suicide Bombers in Nigeria Azeez Olaniyan, Ekiti State University, Nigeria The IAFOR International Conference on the Social Sciences – Dubai 2017 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract The encounters between Boko Haram and the Nigerian state have been largely nightmarish and calamitous, making it one of the most talked about phenomenon in the recent times. The violent activities of Boko Haram constitute major disruption to the Nigerian state, especially in its task of achieving peace and development. Apart from persistent threats to the peace, stability and developmental aspirations of the country, Boko Haram has also wrecked an unimaginably high level of damage on the country’s social fabrics. One of such instance is the sending of young female suicide bombers to unsuspecting members of the public, with tales of death, destruction, displacement, sorrows and tears as consequences. Apparently using indoctrination, intimidation and exploiting the innocence of underage girls, Boko Haram terrorists have inadvertently introduced a dangerous dimension to their violent operations. Indeed, resort to exploiting the innocence of young girls for nefarious activities constitutes an affront on shared social, cultural and religious values of the Nigerian people. And this raises some pertinent questions: what led to the use of young girls for suicide bombings? How do they source for the girls? What are the implications of this trend on the Nigerian society? This paper seeks to interrogate the foregoing questions and by so doing contributes to the discourse on the various dimensions to the Boko Haram insurgency and the implications on shared societal values, peace, orderliness and development in Nigeria and her immediate neighbours. -

Freamon* INTRODUCTION Religion is the mother of war. Conflicts involving religion are among the most intractable of human disputes. Yet, until recently, wars motivated or influenced by religious ideologies have been confined to small well-defined theaters. Europe’s Thirty Years War, which ended in 1648, appears to be the only exception in the modern history of warfare.1 Indeed, in the last three millennia the world has seen much war but it has not seen a full-scale religious war of global proportions since the end of the Crusades. There is reason to believe that this state of affairs is about to change. One of its most significant discourses is the importance of jihad and martyrdom in carrying out a terrorist attack. This study looks at Facebook pages and profiles and examines the discourses presented in relation to jihad and martyrdom. Three important concepts including their justification are considered: Al-Jihad fi Sabilillah (just fight for the sake of Allah), Istishhad (operational heroism of loving death more than the West love life) and Shaheed (becoming a martyr). Results supported previous studies indicating the strong seductive nature of such discourses. Although many discourses were similar to previous studies, several key differences were noted; namely, different emphasises within the concept of Shaheed as well as a strong focus on green bird imagery which became prominent during the Bosnian conflict. Understanding such discourses will be critical in not only preventing terrorism, but also in the developing better deradicalisation strategies.
