  • Peace Be Still”—James Cleveland (1963) Added to the National Registry: 2004 Essay by Robert Marovich (Guest Post)*
“Peace Be Still”—James Cleveland (1963) Added to the National Registry: 2004 Essay by Robert Marovich (guest post)* Original album James Cleveland In 1962, Savoy Records artist James Cleveland, a rising star in the religious music field, wanted to record with a church choir. His reputation as an effective choir director was firmly established in 1959 when he led Detroit’s Voices of Tabernacle to acclaim on its debut album, “The Love of God,” for HOB Records. Savoy executives were eager for Cleveland to replicate his Voices of Tabernacle success for their label. Since the Voices were under contract to HOB, Cleveland had to find another choir to work with him. On a recommendation from Savoy producer Fred Mendelsohn, Cleveland asked the Reverend Lawrence Roberts, supervisor of gospel recordings for Savoy, about borrowing his Angelic Choir. Organized by Roberts as a community group called the Voices of Faith, the Angelic Choir was now established as the church choir at Nutley, New Jersey’s First Baptist Church, where Roberts was pastor. Since the choristers had limited experience in a recording studio, Roberts believed their true essence would shine through if Cleveland recorded with them in the church, before a congregation of familiar faces. Though unconvinced a live recording was the most efficient way to make a record, Cleveland consented and Savoy greenlighted the project. Recorded in 1962 at First Baptist, literally a “little wooden church on a hill,” Cleveland and the Angelic Choir’s first two live Sunday Service albums, “This Sunday in Person” and “How Great Thou Art,” were as commercially and critically successful as “The Love of God.” First Baptist invested its portion of record sales into a building campaign.

It was there I remember buying my first Tams Forty Five, 'What Kind Of Fool (Do You Think I Am)' on HMV and was immediately captured by Joseph Pope's distinctive ragged hoarse lead vocals, and the group’s rough, but tight harmonies. The original members, Joseph Pope, Charles Pope, Robert Lee Smith, and Horace Kay got together in 1952 whilst still at high school in their hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. Their formative years as The Four Dots were spent gigging around the local club/dances/high school circuit. G Taken together, these classic series tell the story of R&B-Soul-Funk from 1945-1975, year-by-year, song-by-song. These are the records that made a difference. A HUGE difference! G This is the sound that still influences today’s R&B and Soul and Rap, plus musicians like Amy Winehouse and Janelle Monae and revivalists like James Hunter, who weren’t even born when these records came out! G All the greatest and most influential soul-funk hits of the early 1970s, including some surprisingly hard-to-find selections! Every song is the original version, painstakingly remastered for finest sound! G Massive, beautifully illustrated booklets with detailed notes, incredible vintage photos, and ephemera. G But, sadly, the story ends here. The last track, Boogie Fever, heralds the dawn of Disco. INFORMATION As Soul morphed into Funk, it became the soundtrack to a social and musical revolution. The riveting story of the 1960s in Soul music was told in full for the first time on BEAR FAMILY's earlier 'Sweet Soul Music' volumes. Now the story continues to our con- clusion in 1975. Some record companies have compiled anthologies from their own vaults, but BEAR FAMILY has gone the extra mile..
