She issued a statement to the press that said in part: "In 1938 my fellow employees in the fountain department of the S.H. Kress Store protested the unreasonable demands of the head of that department by having a walkout. The CIO organizers got in touch with these employees and I, with many others, joined the union. "I was elected on the board of trustees. A week later, several of us, each from a different department, were notified that we were fired. My work was never questioned before and it was clear to me that my joining the union was the cause of my dismissal. I am proud of the number of picket lines I have walked since 1938, and I will continue to fight." Today's service is organized by the Hawaii People's Fund. Saiki was one of its board members for many years. She lent support to Hansen's disease patients at Hale Mohalu, the Hawaiian sovereignty movement, gay rights and many labor causes.
