MATSUDA Young civil rights workers began registering voters in Lowndes County, Alabama, in February 1965. Their work disrupted a century-old bargain between northern and southern elites that allowed the firm hand of Jim Crow to close its grip on the American South. Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) members are the “New Abolitionists,” as Howard Zinn called them.1 They wanted to finish the work the Thirteenth Amendment started, ending the badges and incidents of slavery and bringing the descendants of the enslaved to full citizenship.

In addition to March being Women’s History Month it is also the start of Spring which can be an exciting month and a good time to reflect on the progress of our goals for the New Year. This Spring has started off to be busy and lively for HWL. We have been actively planning our Annual Award ceremony being held on April 10, 2019 at 5:15pm at the Plaza Club and look forward to the opportunity to recognize some amazing women in our community. We are also very excited to present for the first time a Women Corporate Director’s panel discussion on April 30, 2019 moderated by Barbara Tanabe and an esteemed panel of women consisting of Louise Ing, Constance Lau, Catherine Ngo, and Crystal Rose. We look forward to another joint community project with the Hawaii Women’s Legal Foundation for the Parent and Children’s Together (“PACT”) Women’s Shelter. Elected are 27 full-time officers, 13 rank-and-file members to the Local Executive Board, and 14 Delegates to the ILWU International Convention. The election results were announced on November 20, 2012, but candidates filed six challenges to the election. An ILWU Judicial Panel has ruled on challenges to the election results, and those decisions must be carried out before the results are final. A recount has been ordered for Oahu Division, as well as a rerun for one Oahu unit. All officers serve a term of three years, beginning January 2, 2013 and ending on January 1, 2016. Members elected a new President, Green was re-elected and Doreen H. Kua “Nate” Lum (Oahu); the four Division Donna Domingo from Maui, and a new will come on board as a new business Representatives—Myra Spencer Vice President, Teddy B. Espeleta from agent.
