Pocket Books used the title of this book Timescape their science fiction imprint. The story is written from two viewpoints, equidistant from the novel's publication in Timescape The first Timescape is set in a ravaged by ecological disasters such as algal blooms and diebacks on the brink of large scale Timescape. Various other events are mentioned in passing, Timescape as student riots and an event of nuclear terrorism against New York City which took place before the events of the novel. This thread follows a group of scientists in the United Kingdom connected with the University of Cambridge and their attempts to warn the past of the impending disaster by sending tachyon -induced messages to the astronomical position the Earth occupied in — Given the faster-than-light nature of the tachyon, these messages will effectively reach the past. The second thread is set in the University of California, San Diego UCSDin La Jolla, Timescapein where a young scientist, Gordon Bernstein, discovers Timescape noise in a physics experiment relating to Timescape resonance and indium antimonide. He and his student assistant, Albert Cooper also likely based on Timescape author and his experiences at UCSDdiscover that the noise is Timescape in bursts timed to form Morse code.

(e-mail: fraknoi {at} fhda {dot} edu) This is a selective list of some short stories and novels that use reasonably accurate science and can be used for teaching or reinforcing astronomy or physics concepts. The titles of short stories are given in quotation marks; only short stories that have been published in book form or are available free on the Web are included. While one book source is given for each short story, note that some of the stories can be found in other collections as well. (See the Internet Speculative Fiction Database, cited at the end, for an easy way to find all the places a particular story has been published.) • Defining Fantasy
1 DEFINING FANTASY by Steven S. Long This article is my take on what makes a story Fantasy, the major elements that tend to appear in Fantasy, and perhaps most importantly what the different subgenres of Fantasy are (and what distinguishes them). I’ve adapted it from Chapter One of my book Fantasy Hero, available from Hero Games at www.herogames.com, by eliminating or changing most (but not all) references to gaming and gamers. My insights on Fantasy may not be new or revelatory, but hopefully they at least establish a common ground for discussion. I often find that when people talk about Fantasy they run into trouble right away because they don’t define their terms. A person will use the term “Swords and Sorcery” or “Epic Fantasy” without explaining what he means by that. Since other people may interpret those terms differently, this leads to confusion on the part of the reader, misunderstandings, and all sorts of other frustrating nonsense. So I’m going to define my terms right off the bat. When I say a story is a Swords and Sorcery story, you can be sure that it falls within the general definitions and tropes discussed below. The same goes for Epic Fantasy or any other type of Fantasy tale. Please note that my goal here isn’t necessarily to persuade anyone to agree with me — I hope you will, but that’s not the point. What I call “Epic Fantasy” you may refer to as “Heroic Fantasy” or “Quest Fantasy” or “High Fantasy.” I don’t really care.

From Water Margins to Borderlands: Boundaries and the Fantastic in Fantasy, Native American, and Asian American Literatures A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota By Jennifer L. Miller In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation Advisor: Dr. David Treuer December 2009 © Jennifer L. Miller 2009 Acknowledgements The completion of this dissertation would not have been possible without the help and support of many people. In particular, I would like to thank the following people for their unfailing advice, support, and love: Dr. David Treuer, my advisor, for giving my project a home and for your enthusiasm for my idea. My committee members, Dr. Josephine Lee, Dr. Jack Zipes, and Dr. Qadri Ismail, for their comments, critiques, and advice. I appreciate your willingness to work with a project that exists in between categories, and for pushing your own boundaries to embrace it. The Asian American Studies dissertation writing group, headed by Dr. Josephine Lee. Thank you for including my project in your group. Your support, comments, and advice were extremely helpful, and being part of this group helped provide the impetus for seeing my project through to completion. Kathleen Howard and Lindsay Craig, for your work with me on the Fantasy Matters conference in November of 2007. Thank you for helping me organize a wonderful conference, and for being wonderful friends who helped me figure out my dissertation, academia, and life in general. My parents, Mark Ilten and the late Donna (Sieck) Ilten, for providing me with an incredible literary foundation.

SF COMMENTARY 79 THE TUCKER ISSUE SECOND EDITION Bruce Gillespie Denny Lien Hank Luttrell Lesleigh Luttrell Philip Stephensen-Payne Wilson ‘Bob’ Tucker Paul Walker T. K. F. Weisskopf THANKS TONI WEISSKOPF, for her many years of work on the Tucker biography. The Second Edition really took off when Toni agreed to write a shortened version of her biography as the Introduction. Also thanks to Toni for the selection of Tucker photos she went me by email. Apologies in advance to the photographers — perhaps some of them will recognise their photos when they see them in print and can let me know. HELENA BINNS, who was the official photographer for Aussiecon I, Melbourne, 1975. She scanned and sent me a disk of the original colour photo of Tucker at the convention, as well as photos of other famous people looking impossibly young and hirsute. DITMAR (DICK JENSSEN), who says that the front cover of this issue, which combines a Tucker photo sent to me by Toni and a computer graphic, is the most difficult and time- consuming fanzine cover he’s produced. He points, in particular, to the wonderful glowing effect he’s given to the Great Ghod Tucker. Thanks also to Dick for computer-tweaking the photographs of several book covers in order to make them usable. BOB TUCKER, who, despite poor health, gave much help during the process of gathering together this issue. Bob alerted me to Toni’s biography and introduced me to her (by Internet), and also got in touch with . KEN KELLER, who sent me the copy of his 1975 fanzine, Nickelodeon No.
