  • St Barnabas Manor Park Parish Profile
ST. BARNABAS CHURCH Browning Road, Manor Park, London E12 6PB T: 020 8472 2777 E: [email protected] www.stbarnabasmanorpark.co.uk PARISH PROFILE 2017 St Barnabas Church, Manor Park E12 PARISH PROFILE 2017 Parish Summary We are a diverse, friendly, inclusive congregation. We seek to love God and our neighbours in the spirit of the commandment given to us in the Gospel. Everyone from every background is welcomed at St Barnabas. Our Sunday Family Eucharist at 9:30am is our main service, which is relaxed but traditional in structure with a variety of music. We have a dynamic Sunday school and our children actively participate in the main service. Our focus is on sharing Communion in prayer and song, exploring Scripture, being of service and seeking fellowship in church, and bearing witness to the world. We are looking for a priest who will continue the catholic tradition of our parish as manifest by: 1. Our emphasis on the Eucharist as central to our worship; 2. The wearing of vestments in accordance to the liturgical seasons; 3. The celebration of the major feasts and saints’ days; 4. The complete cycle of Lent starting with Ash Wednesday, Stations of the Cross leading up to the great feast of Easter. We look forward to welcoming a thoughtful and energetic priest who will continue in our tradition. Our church building is large and beautiful – a surprise compared to its somewhat modest exterior. The building was designed by Sir Ninian Comper in partnership with William Bucknall at the beginning of the 20th Century. We have recently carried out major structural renovation, but more work is needed to make the building more flexible for greater community use, while maintaining the sacred space and the architectural heritage.

  • Walthamstow the Members of the Brigade Have Been Represented at an Inquiry Held Following Public Criticism ; and Elsewhere Membe
38 Walthamstow the members of the brigade have been represented at an inquiry held following public criticism ; and elsewhere members have been represented in cases of a disciplinary character. Abortive efforts have been made at Croydon and Ilford for the establishment of the Two-Shift System, these being areas rather reactionary in character ; also at Willesden we are giving attention to the present scheme of duty; and at Dagenham we have secured the Two-Shift System of a proper basis of twelve-hour shifts (or equivalent ) with weekly leave day instead of the 24 hours about system with no leave day. Unfortunately this brigade has been exceedingly difficult to organise, and our present membership there is exceedingly low. Represen tations Were made at East Ham with regard to the pay of men engaged on special duties of Gamewell Fire Alarms, as to unappointed motor drivers being required to drive brigade vehicles and objecting to inclusion in a joint staff committee. At Wallsend an increase in pay of 7s. 6d. a Week for firemen was gained. At Bedwellty (Mon.) small increases in pay have been secured, but at Gellygaer we have been faced with this new type of committee. It has made its appearance also at Tottenham. In character this committee consists broadly of one-half representatives of the Council and one-half representing the employees ; and while in one case it is claimed that it not intended in any way to affect the ordinary Trade Union negotiation, yet in others it does appear to be calculated to form a buffer between the Trade Union and the Local Authority.

Thames Ironworks Football Club, the club that would later become West Ham United, was founded by Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Co. Ltd owner Arnold Hills and foreman Dave Taylor in 1895. Thames Ironworks took over the tenancy of The Old Castle Swis' Hermit Road ground in Canning Town until their eventual eviction in October 1896. They would briefly play at Browning Road in East Ham, before moving to the Memorial Grounds, a stadium which was situated close to where West Ham station now stands. The ground was built at Arnold Hills' own expense, costing Pds. 20,000. Thames Ironworks were West Ham Charity Cup winners in 1895-96 and London League runners up and champions in 1896-97 and 1897- 98. They were promoted to Southern League Division One in 1898-99 as Southern League Division Two Champions.

The move to Upton Park came about when, in 1904, Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company owner Arnold Hills was having financial issues. Hills was unwilling to re-negotiate a deal for the club to remain at Memorial Grounds, meaning the Hammers needed to find a new place to call home. Upton Park was settled upon, where the club would play its football from the 1904/05 season right up until 2016. The stadium, which was originally named The Castle, was built next to and in the grounds of Green Street House. The pitch was laid on an area that had previously been used to grow cabbages and potatoes. The stadium originally consisted of a small West Stand, a covered terrace backing on to Priory Road and changing rooms placed in the north- west corner between the West Stand and North Bank. West Ham’s first game at Upton Park came on Thursday, 1 September 1904, when they beat long-standing rivals 15 THE BOLEYN’S Farewell Millwall 3-0 in front of 10,000 fans.
