Clark, Elise Tartar, Laurent Marquer, Raphaëlle Bourrillon, Paul Goldberg, Laurent Chiotti, Catherine Cretin, William Rendu, Anne Pike-Tay, and Sarah Ranlett Online enhancements: supplemental figures We can trace the beginnings of our knowledge of early Upper Paleolithic (Aurignacian) use of fire to the pioneering 1910–1911 excavations at Abri Blanchard undertaken by Louis Didon and Marcel Castanet. At Blanchard, the excavators recognized and described fire structures that correspond in many ways to features excavated more re- cently in Western and Central Europe. Here, we address the issue of heat and light management in the early Upper Paleolithic, demonstrating a pattern that builds on these early excavations but that is refined through our recent field operations. Topics to be discussed include (1) recently excavated fire structures that suggest complex fire man- agement and use, (2) the seemingly massive use of bone as fuel in most early Aurignacian sites, and (3) the anchoring of skin structures for purposes of heat retention with fireplaces behind animal-skin walls. Furthermore, new data on activities around fireplaces make it possible to infer social and organizational aspects of fire structures within Au- rignacian living spaces. The vast majority of early Aurignacian occupations, most of them now dated to between 33,000 and 32,000 BP (uncalibrated), occurred on a previously unoccupied bedrock platform into which the occupants dug their fire features. C’est ainsi que nous avons eu à nous pencher, comme l’ensemble des communes du département, sur la problématique de l’organisation des secours en cas de difficulté majeure liée à un évènement accidentel ou climatologique. L’expérience, notamment, de la tempête de 1999, nous a conduits à formuler un certain nombre d’observations et de préconisations visant à être plus efficaces et plus réactifs à l’avenir face à de tels évènements qui pourraient malheureusement à nouveau survenir. Il y a donc lieu de gérer plusieurs paramètres, savoir qui fait quoi, comment contacter les personnes, de quels moyens disposons-nous et de quelle façon travaillons-nous avec les services de l’Etat. Cette réflexion globale a abouti à l’élaboration d’un Plan Communal de Sauvegarde qui servira de support utile en cas de difficulté et sera adaptable ou révisable dans le temps. Ce type de travail me semble essentiel dans nos territoires ruraux. Il m’arrive souvent, en effet, de mettre en avant la nécessaire qualité de services à conserver ou à développer dans nos campagnes où il doit faire bon vivre sans manquer de l’essentiel. On mesure ici toute l’importance de l’échelon indispensable des élus municipaux par rapport aux populations qui doivent rester des interlocuteurs de proximité et heureusement que les réformes territoriales concernant les instances de types Communautés de Communes ou bientôt cantons n’ont jusqu’à présent pas remis en cause le statut des Maires et des conseillers municipaux dans nos petites communes.

    World Archaeology at the Pitt Rivers Museum: A Characterization edited by Dan Hicks and Alice Stevenson, Archaeopress 2013, page 216-239 10 Palaeolithic Continental Europe Alison Roberts 10.1 Introduction The collection of Palaeolithic material from Continental Europe in the Pitt Rivers Museum (PRM) is almost of equivalent size to the collection from the British Isles (see Chapter 9), but is not nearly as well known or as well published. It consists mainly of material from France that seems to have been an under-acknowledged highlight of the PRM archaeological collections for most of the 20th century. Despite the obvious care with which French Palaeolithic material was acquired by the museum, especially during the curatorship of Henry Balfour, the collection has mainly been used for teaching and display, rather than as a research resource. Due to the historic lack of work on the collection so far, this chapter presents a preliminary overview, to orient and inform future research, rather than a full account of the collections. The exact numbers of Palaeolithic objects from Europe are difficult to state with certainty due to factors such as unquantified batch registration of groups of objects in the past, and missing or incorrect cultural attributions in the documentation. However, it is estimated that there are c. 3,760 Palaeolithic objects from continental Europe in the PRM, c. 534 of which are from the founding collection of the PRM (PRMFC)(1). It’s in the city of Montignac-Lascaux where happened one of the biggest prehistoric discovering of all the time: the cave of Lascaux, in 1940. The Lascaux cave has been opened to the public during many years until its closure in 1963. The important number of visitors (1500 per day) and the carbon dioxide due to the human breathing began to destroy the prehistoric paintings. Today, the original cave is closed and monitored in order to protect this classified site. Not far, the city of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil is the world capital of prehistory.
