west coast music Midnight Special Please find attached the Midnight Special song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has.

And what a year it was! The year had barely begun when we were already saying goodbye to musical heroes gone far too soon. David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Prince, George Michael ... the list goes on. And yet, despite the sadness of these losses, there is much for the industry to celebrate. Music consumption is at an all-time high. Overall consumption of album sales, song sales and audio on-demand streaming volume is up 5% over 2015, fueled by an incredible 203% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. 2016 also marked the highest vinyl sales total to date. It was an incredible year for Canadian artists, at home and abroad. Eight different Canadian artists had #1 albums in 2016, led by Drake whose album Views was the biggest album of the year in Canada as well as the U.S. The Tragically Hip had two albums reach the top of the chart as well, their latest release and their 2005 best of album, and their emotional farewell concert in August was something we’ll remember for a long time. Justin Bieber, Billy Talent, Céline Dion, Shawn Mendes, Leonard Cohen and The Weeknd also spent time at #1. Break out artist Alessia Cara as well as accomplished superstar Michael Buble also enjoyed successes this year.

PERFORMERS BiU Withers By Rob Bowman He was the leading figure in the nascent black singer-songwriter movement of the early 1970s. BILL WITHERS WAS SIMPLY NOT BORN TO PLAY THE record industry game. His oft-repeated descriptor for A&R men is “antagonistic and redundant.” Not surprisingly, most A&R men at Columbia Records, the label he recorded for beginning in 1975, considered him “difficult.” Yet when given the freedom to follow his muse, Withers wrote, sang, and in many cases produced some of our most enduring classics, including “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean on Me,” “Use Me,” “Lovely Day,” “Grandma’s Hands,” and “Who Is He (and What Is He to You).” ^ “Not a lot of people got me,” Withers recently mused. “Here I was, this black guy playing an acoustic guitar, and I wasn’t playing the gut-bucket blues. People had a certain slot that they expected you to fit in to.” ^ Withers’ story is about as improb able as it could get. His first hit, “Ain’t No Sunshine,” recorded in 1971 when he was 33, broke nearly every pop music rule. Instead of writing words for a bridge, Withers audaciously repeated “I know” twenty-six times in a row. Moreover, the two-minute song had no introduction and was released as a throwaway B-side. Produced by Stax alumni Booker T. Jones for Sussex Records, the single’s struc ture, sound, and sentiment were completely unprecedented and pos sessed a melody and lyric that tapped into the Zeitgeist of the era. Like much of Withers’ work, it would ultimately prove to be timeless.

forEword What is the difference between a graphic designer and a “fine artist,” between he who gives highway signs their typeface and she whose canvasses and sculptures live in museums where admission must be paid? In terms of talent, possibly none. The difference is one of intimacy. We gaze up at our favorite paintings, gingerly circumnavigate the greatest sculptures—we literally put them on pedestals. But we hug our favorite books and records, and kiss their covers, and a particular typeface will forever conjure the road-sign at the turnoff to the summer lodge, that last turn that led to nirvana, the last week of August, the summer after tenth grade. I don’t want to meet the artist (the painter, the sculptor, the violin prodigy, the rock star), for if I did, she’d probably disappoint, and if she didn’t, I’d be tongue-tied. But the graphic designer? I want to clasp him to me, and ask how he did it, and say Thank you. No need to invite George Corsillo into your living room and offer him a nip or a puff—he’s been there all along. He’s been in your album crate since the early 1980s, showcasing John and Olivia at their Grease-iest, Luther Vandross at his sultriest, Benatar, Mellencamp, Yoko. In his toolbox, George always brings his analog chops, learned with the legendary book-jacket designer Paul Bacon; nobody has that facility with typeface or silkscreening who grew up only on computers. He brings, too, a party- down fierceness, a willingness to get his hands dirty (on the Grease jacket, those are George’s teeth marks on the pencil), a scavenger’s resourcefulness (the legs on the Tilt cover? his wife, Susan’s), and a tactful deference to the artist, masking, as needed, Vandross’s girth or Benatar’s pregnancy.
