EXPLORING THE PATH TO SUCCESS OF FOUR BLACK CANADIAN ATHLETES FROM THE 1980s to 2017 GREGORY MAPP SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF EDUCATION NIPISSING UNIVERSITY SCHULICH SCHOOL OF EDUCATION NORTH BAY, ONTARIO © December 2018 iii Abstract The purpose of this study was to understand what has led to the success at the highest levels for some Black Canadian athletes. Specifically, what are the similarities and/or differences between and among these athletes that has led some to the pinnacle of success and others to not so fortunate circumstances? Through an investigation of 4 Black Canadian athletes, qualities, characteristics, factors, circumstances, and/or conditions were grouped, examined and the findings subsequently supported by my own personal experiences as a Black Canadian athlete in an attempt to understand what has contributed to the success at the highest levels for some Black Canadian athletes and not for others. My qualitative study revealed many similar and dissimilar qualities, characteristics, and factors that contributed to the successes of the 4 Black Canadian Athletes studied. The interpretation and analysis of the data collected divulged the following emergent themes: introduction to their particular sport, motivation, determination, challenges the athletes faced, the “IT factor”, and, a strong belief in themselves. The study concludes with some considerations for future study and suggestions to increase awareness, initiate discussion, and educate and encourage coaches, young

  • Sermon Archive 2012
SERMON ARCHIVE 2012 Swedenborgian Community Online The Lord in the New Year January 1, 2012 READINGS From the Bible John 14: 8-12 8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. From Swedenborg True Christian Religion, #81 81. In the preceding chapter God the creator, together with creation, has been treated of. This chapter will treat of the Lord the redeemer, together with redemption; and the next chapter of the Holy Spirit, together with the Divine operation. By the Lord the redeemer we mean Jehovah in the human; for in what follows it will be shown that Jehovah himself descended and assumed a human in order that he might effect redemption.

Storytelling, in particular, is a talent: a precious gift bequeathed to us by family or friends or teachers or mentors. The Origin Project is an in-school writing program that sprouted from the idea that the stories and people of Appalachia are national treasures and our children should celebrate their roots. Co-founded by best-selling author and film director Adriana Trigiani and education advocate and longtime friend Nancy Bolmeier Fisher, this program seeks to inspire young people to dis- cover and release their inner voices through the craft of writing about their unique origins and has expanded to include and celebrate the diverse heritage within its growing group of students. Now a five-year-old, The Origin Project has multiplied from 40 students in Big Stone Gap to more than 1,300 students in 11 schools.
